In-game blog: Jags at Broncos

Pregame - 12:50PM

Hi, everybody, and welcome to the press box at Invesco Field. It's a cool, gray day in Denver right now, but the sun is supposed to make an appearance later in the day and temperatures are supposed to warm into the 50s. In other words, it's a perfect day for a football game. Welcome aboard. The blog starts now.

Pregame - 1:14PM

Here's a good note: If the Jaguars win today, they will become only the seventh non-AFC West team to win in Denver in consecutive seasons.

Pregame - 1:27PM

Fred Taylor is 53 yards shy of 11,000 career rushing yards. This is his 133rd career game, which would tie him for the eighth fastest to reach 11,000 yards.

Pregame - 1:29PM

More on Fred: Taylor is also looking for his first touchdown of the season, which would be a team-record 70th of his career. He's currently tied with Jimmy Smith with 69 career touchdowns. With his sixth rushing attempt, Taylor will pass Jim Brown for 21st place on the all-time rushing attempts list.

Pregame - 1:31PM

The Broncos will be attempting to win their 400th game in franchise history. The Jaguars-Broncos series is tied at 3-3 in regular-season games and 1-1 in postseason. The Jaguars have won three of the last four games between the two teams.

Pregame - 2:20PM

I'm watching Jay Cutler warm up and I can't help but think that if he had been drafted by his hometown Titans, the Jaguars, Colts and Texans might be playing for second place for a long time. The guy has a world-class arm.

Pregame - 2:23PM

I really liike this stadium. It doesn't have the charm that some of the other new ones have, but I like the fact that it makes me feel like I'm sitting in old Mile High Stadium. They continued the Mile High tradition with this field, right down to the sign on the wall outside the visitors' locker room door that proudly proclaims the elevation to be 5,280 feet. Take a deep breath, boys.

Pregame - 2:47PM

The Jaguars inactives: Reggie Nelson, Chauncey Washington, Brian Witherspoon, Thomas Williams, Brad Meester, Chris Naeole, Mike Walker and Rob Meier. Tutan Reyes will start at right guard for Milford Brown. Tony McDaniel will start at defensive tackle for Meier and Gerald Sensabaugh will start at safety for Nelson.

Pregame - 2:50PM

The Broncos inactives: Eddie Royal, Selvin Young, Vernon Fox, Ryan Torain, Erik Pears, Tony Scheffler, Ebenezer Ekuban and Josh Shaw. Darrell Jackson will replace Royal in the starting lineup at wide receiver and Michael Pittman will replace Young in the starting lineup at running back.

Pregame - 3:23PM

I'm heading over to the radio booth for a pregame segment. I'll be back for the coin toss.

Pregame - 4:03PM

Denver has won the toss and elected to receive. So much for deferring.

15:00 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 0

Cutler goes empty on the first play, throws to Brandon Marshall and it nearly went the distance. Pierson Prioleau made the saving tackle at the Broncos 36-yard line.

13:51 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 0

Cutler throws to Marshall on three consecutive plays and the Broncos are at the Jaguars 35.

12:06 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 0

The Broncos have a first down at the Jaguars 24. This is too easy. The Jags need to wall up now.

10:21 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 0

First down at the Jaguars 10; first and goal. The Broncos are two for two on third down.

09:33 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 6

Touchdown! Cutler to Brandon Stokley over the middle. Brian Williams was in coverage.

09:33 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 7

That opening drive was classic Mike Shanahan. He loves to start fast. Here's what he did: He used multiple formations and motion all over the place to hit the Jaguars before they got into any kind of comfort level. It worked. I also saw something else I'll talk about later.

09:33 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 7

Cutler was seven of seven on that drive. Here's what else I saw: Shanahan used formations that prohibited the Jaguars from using the "cover two" defense against which the Broncos struggled last week against Tampa.

09:33 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 7

The Jaguars start at their 18.

09:33 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 7

David Garrard starts with a completion to Greg Jones for eight yards.

08:21 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 7

On third and one Garrard throws to Dennis Northcutt for a 13-yard gain to the Jaguars 39.

07:39 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 7

Fumble! Garrard drumps it to Fred Taylor. It was going to be a sizeable gain but Taylor got hit hard and fumbled. D.J. Williams recovered the fumble at the Broncos 42.

06:48 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 7

Taylor gained 10 before the fumble. It was a real nice job of recognizing a corner blitz by Dre Bly. Garrard either checked to the perfect play or had it called in the huddle. Nate Webster made the hit. It was square in Fred's chops. That's the Jaguars first turnover in the last 10 quarters.

06:48 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 7

Fumble! Cutler scrambles and looses the ball. That's a major break for the Jaguars. Rashean Mathis made the recovery. Reggie Hayward knocked the ball out.

06:37 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 7

Maurice Jones-Drew runs for nine yards. Let me say this about Cutler: He doesn't run as well as John Elway.

04:42 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 0, DEN: 7

Field goal time. Josh Scobee has made 10 straight. This one is a 48-yard attempt. It's good. Make it 11 straight.

03:55 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

I like what I see in Garrard. I don't like what I see in the run game. The guys up front are getting whipped.

03:55 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

IT has instructed me to tell you to hit refresh so that you get the right boxscore or something. I'm just telling you what I've been told.

03:55 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

IT has instructed me to tell you to hit refresh so that you get the right boxscore or something. I'm just telling you what I've been told.

02:08 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

The Broncos break off a long run but it's going to be nullified by holding. The defense has got to get into this game. The Broncos are having their way with the Jaguars in the run game and in the pass game.

01:45 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Intercepted by Gerald Sensabaugh on third and seven. Cutler was rolling right; nobody was open and he just heaved it downfield, much like a punt. The ball is at the Jaguars six-yard line. Cutler cost himself some ratings points with that pass, even though it was a very effective "punt."

00:55 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

That's the end of the first quarter. The Jaguars have the ball at their 29-yard line, second and two.

00:55 left in 1st Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

That's the end of the first quarter. The Jaguars have the ball at their 29-yard line, second and two.

15:00 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Garrard hits Troy Williamson with a bomb to the Denver two-yard line but it's coming back. Khalif Barnes is called for holding. That's a killer penalty. It would've been a game-changing play.

15:00 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Who said Garrard can't throw deep? That pass was a thing of beauty. The Jags' deep-ball failures have nothing to do with Garrard.

13:54 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

The Garrard to Williamson pass would've been a 69-yarder.

13:36 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Taylor is questionable with a blow to the head.

12:15 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Cutler throws to Stokley for a first down at the Jags 39. Michael Pittman then follows with a burst up the middle for another first down. Hey, this has got to stop. What is wrong with this defense?

10:53 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

There's no pass-rush at all. I mean none. Cutler is just sitting back there as though it's a skeleton drill.

10:53 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Sensabaugh is leaving the field with what appears to be a hand, arm or shoulder injury. The Jaguars can't play "nickle" if Sensabaugh can't play.

09:27 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Fumble! A bizarre play. Cutler throws to Marshall for what would've been a first down at the Jags five-yard line, but then he just flat dropped the ball on the ground and Drayton Florence picked it up and returned it to the Jaguars 25. Bronco goofs are keeping the Jags in this game.

09:27 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Taylor has gone to the locker room. He had the long coat on.

09:27 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Sensabaugh has a sprained thumb. His return is probable.

08:56 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

The Jaguars are starting to get some push up front. Jones-Drew runs twice and the Jags are at their 40, second and six.

08:56 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

It's going to be third and a foot. Jones-Drew is running well.

08:13 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Garrard sneaks for the first down; good push in the center.

06:50 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Nice run off right tackle by Greg Jones. There was a huge running lane.

04:36 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

On third and five Garrard throws to Greg Estandia, but Estandia lost possession of the ball as he was going out of bounds. Jack Del Rio is challenging the call.

04:36 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

The Jaguars are going to win this challenge. Estandia took two steps with the ball secure in his grasp before he was knocked out of bounds and then lost control of the ball. It's going to be first down at about the Broncos 24.

04:36 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Poor Fred. I don't see him returning to this game. He still needs 53 yards to get to 11,000.

04:36 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

The Jags win the challenge. It's a catch.

04:36 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Garrard is getting a lot of time to throw, too. He dumps the ball to Greg Jones for a first down at the Broncos 12.

03:49 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 3, DEN: 7

Garrard to Matt Jones on the ever-popular slant. The ball is at the Broncos one, first and goal.

03:03 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 9, DEN: 7

Touchdown! Jones-Drew around left end. He went in standing up. What a turn of events. The Marshall fumble is the turning point in this game so far.

02:58 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Leading 10-7, one thing is evident about this game: Both defenses have been very soft. The Jags and Broncos have already combined for 323 yards.

02:58 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Stupid penalty! They continued the tackle well out of bounds. It's going to put the Broncos across their 40 to begin this drive. Yuk! I hate those.

02:58 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Big run around left end. Paul Spicer got hooked. Pittman gained 18 to the Jags 39.

02:00 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

We're at the two-minute warning. I'm looking at a shot of Jack Del Rio's face. It's as though he's thinking, "What is wrong with my defense?"

01:19 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Nearly intercepted by Mathis. Cutler threw it right to him. Cutler gets funny from time to time. He's good, but he's no Elway.

01:19 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

On fourth and one the Jags hold. That's a big play. Again, the Broncos don't get it done. They move it like a hot knife through butter, but then they bog done for no apparent reason.

00:55 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

The Jags take over at their 30. Garrard dumps it to Jones-Drew for a decent gain. Time out, Jags, with 55 seconds to play and the ball at the Jags 41.

00:55 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Garrard to Matt Jones; out of bounds at the Denver 47.

00:50 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Garrard to Northcutt at the Broncos 28 with 43 seconds to play. The Broncos are offering no resistance.

00:37 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Time out, Jags, with 37 seconds to play and the ball at the Denver 20.

00:37 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Sack, fumble, Denver has it. It was a blitz; a jail break. Garrard didn't have a chance. The pressure came right up the middle.

00:30 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

The Broncos keep throwing. Is this half ever going to end? Here's my advice: Take a knee and go into the locker room and learn how to not fumble the ball; both teams.

00:12 left in 2nd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Now the Broncos have to punt with 12 seconds left. They should've just run out the block.

Halftime

Hooray! The Jags took a knee. It's over. That's one of the weirdest and most poorly played halves of football I've seen in a long time. Based on the score, you'd think this was a defensive struggle; far from it. The Jags are in a great spot right now if they can get their act together at halftime.

Halftime

Garrard is 16 of 19 for 148 yards and a 99.1 passer rating. He's throwing the ball beautifully and he's getting good protection, except on one occasion. The Jags are running the ball and throwing the ball with equal aplomb, but they've allowed nearly 200 yards of offense by the Broncos.

Halftime

Shanahan may have panicked his team with too much up-tempo. His third-and-one call near the end of the half is perplexing. Why not run the ball? I think he got too aggressive. Maybe he just knows his defense can't stop anybody so he has to score a lot.

Halftime

It never got into the 50s, but it's a pleasant day; not much wind.

15:00 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

I just received word that Taylor expects to return to action in the second half.

14:33 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Garrard to Marcedes Lewis for a 27-yard gain to the Broncos 46. It's anything the Jags want.

13:56 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Time out, Jags. Garrard must've had the wrong personnel on the field. This is going to be a shootout.

13:56 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 10, DEN: 7

Some guys just play well against certain teams, and Garrard plays well against the Broncos.

13:47 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 16, DEN: 7

Touchdown! Jones-Drew blew off right tackle untouched for 46 yards. I'm telling you he was untouched.

13:47 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 7

The Broncos are not a team of division-leading quality. The AFC West must be very, very weak. The Broncos defense has left the building.

13:14 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 7

Cutler forces the ball. He looks in one direction quite often. He misses open receivers.

13:14 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 7

Oh, what a catch by Glenn Martinez for a first down.

12:09 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 7

The ball bounced out of Brian Williams' hands and into Martinez'. It's third down.

11:26 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 7

Cutler scrambles for a first down. He made Florence miss.

10:42 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 7

The Jags are playing some soft zone stuff now. They're going to make the Broncos march the ball. Is Cutler patient enough?

10:06 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 7

Big run on third and one. The Jags all got sucked inside by the motion.

09:35 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 7

Should've been a touchdown. Nate Jackson was all alone in the end zone. Somebody lost coverage. The Jags are getting very, very lucky. It was just off his fingertips.

08:50 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 7

Field goal time. Brian Williams knocked the pass away; good play. Cutler should've stepped up in the pocket. Matt Prater is good from 39 yards.

08:39 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 10

I like Cutler. I like him a lot, but he's not fully developed. He needs to learn to be patient in the pocket. He had all the time in the world. He could've stepped up and frozen the secondary.

08:40 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 10

Where is Jerry Porter today? I got a tip that he was a big part of the game plan, but I've only seen him on a few plays.

08:35 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 10

If the Jags don't turn it over, they can't be stopped. Taylor is back in the game.

07:45 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 10

Champ Bailey makes a big tackle for a loss on Jones-Drew. He's the Broncos' true star player.

07:45 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 10

I think we have holding in the secondary. I'll wait for the call. Yeah, it's holding against the Broncos; first down. It would've been punt time.

07:00 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 10

Shanahan is complaining because they're calling it illegal conduct, which is not an automatic first down. I'll tell you, I think Reggie Williams initiated the contact. Luck is with the Jags.

07:00 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 10

Garrard to Estandia; lovely play across midfield.

05:12 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 17, DEN: 10

Garrard is chewing them up with short, drive-sustaining stuff. It's at the Denver 35.

03:56 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 23, DEN: 10

Touchdown! Garrard to Lewis, who broke a tackle at the five. It's the longest touchdown pass of the season for the Jaguars.

03:48 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

The Jags can't be stopped. The Broncos know it. I've seen better expansion-team defenses.

03:48 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Offensive pass interference; it's all going the Jags' way. I don't think I've ever seen a game swing so far from one side to the other.

03:27 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

No rush; completion for a first down.

02:11 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

The Jags are playing a very effective deep zone. It's not a prevent but it's close. Cutler looks confused by it.

02:06 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Offside, Jaguars, on third and three. Come on. It's against Quentin Groves.

01:30 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Wild play loses yardage. Shanahan is doing everything he can to get the Jags out of their deep zone. He's going empty and that's leaving the Jags single-high, but that play didn't work.

01:30 left in 3rd Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Big play coming up here. It's third and eight.

15:00 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Incomplete; Cutler heaved it deep. It was a strange pass. He doesn't see the field. He's not in command. He's not like the guy the Jaguars faced last Sunday. That's the end of the third quarter.

15:00 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Garrard needs 44 yards for a career-high game. He's never had a 300-yard game.

15:00 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Cutler could've run for the first down. He had the whole side of the field open. He just doesn't seem to have a feel.

14:52 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

The Jags start at their 20. With a two-touchdown lead, the game is in the offense's hands. They need to control the ball and the clock.

14:52 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

The difference in this half is the Jags haven't turned it over.

14:51 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Fabulous throw for a first down; pinpoint pass to Matt Jones. I've never seen Garrard throw it better.

13:08 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Big play here; third and six. If they convert here, turn out the lights.

13:08 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Great play by Dre Bly; the pass was for Matt Jones on the slant. Bly knocked it away.

12:21 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Poor punt; out of bounds. The Jags got a very favorable placement at the Broncos 28.

12:15 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

There's 12:15 to play. Cutler has to move the ball down the field quickly because I don't think the Broncos will three-and-out the Jags.

12:15 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

He's forcing the ball. He's getting worse as the game goes on. I really don't like what I'm seeing now. Cutler's not ready for prime time.

11:33 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Cutler had Daniel Graham wide open down the left seam and didn't even see him. Denver has to punt.

11:17 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

The Jags have it at their 32 with 11:17 to play. A couple of first downs would wrap this up.

11:11 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Two incomplete passes run 12 seconds off the clock. That's good.

11:11 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Sack! That was a terrible series. It should've been run, run, run. It's all about the clock now.

10:24 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Big return by Martinez. It was a line-drive punt. Podlesh made the touchdown-saving tackle at the Jaguars 37. There's 10:10 to play. They took no time off the clock.

10:10 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Illegal contact by Florence. It's only five yards. I must be wrong about illegal contact. It must be an automatic first down. I apologize.

10:03 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 10

Marshall makes a short catch and long run. The ball is at the Jags 11.

09:25 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 16

Touchdown! Cutler to Graham in the left seam. They must've seen what I saw earlier and went back to it.

09:19 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

What''s bothering me is the play-calling on that previous series. It was a clock game at that point. Jones-Drew is running well. Why didn't they run him?

09:19 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Now the pressure is on the offense. They have to move the ball.

09:13 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Two runs get a first down. That's what they should've done the last time.

08:31 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Jones-Drew is over 100 yards. It's the seventh 100-yard game of his career.

07:52 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Busted play. Garrard may have gone the wrong way. He gains a yard.

07:11 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Incomplete! Why pass? The clock is stopped at 7:07.

07:11 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Incomplete again! The game is on.

07:00 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Line-drive punt. Martinez takes it straight up the gut to the Denver 31. It's up to the defense again.

06:50 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Third down; this is it.

06:07 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Fourth down; good job by the defense. It held!

06:03 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

The Jags will start the drive at their 27. Please RUN THE BALL.

05:46 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Completion carries out of bounds and stops the clock. It's third and two.

05:46 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

QB draw, of course. It gains the first down. Everybody knew it was coming. Garrard was in shotgun. It makes the Broncos use one of their three times out.

05:04 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Run it, run it, run it; make them expire their times out. That's how you play in this league.

04:48 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

That's run number one. Time out, Broncos. They have one time out remaining. There's 4:39 to play.

04:39 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

Flag! This is big. It's on Denver for pass interference. The ball is on the Broncos 31. I just looked at the replay. It was close, to say the least.

04:39 left in 4th Qtr -- JAX: 24, DEN: 17

This should do it. Run it and kick the clincher.
