Top Storylines From Jaguars' Week 9 Win Over Ravens: Taming the 'Cat

W9 STORYLINES

BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior writer John Oehser examines five key storylines from the Jaguars’ 33-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in a 2026 Week 9 game at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md., Thursday

1.Methodical, professional, successful. The Jaguars on Thursday played their shortest "short-week" game to date under Liam Coen, and the second-year head coach had high praise for his team. "I was extremely proud of their process throughout the week," Coen said. "I told the guys it was one of the best short weeks I've been a part of in terms of their preparation and their detail. We didn't have a ton of guys looking lost [Thursday]. You just had a lot of guys just business-like, doing their job, and had some individual performances of guys making plays." The Jaguars took a quick 7-0 lead Thursday, never trailed and pulled away throughout the second half. They outgained the Ravens, 319-227 and committed just one turnover – a fumble by wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter on a second-half screen pass – on a rain-soaked night. They also held the Ravens to 10 first downs while forcing three Baltimore turnovers. "The coaches prepared us really well on the short week," Jaguars cornerback Jourdan Lewis said. "We understood what type of game plan they wanted to go do, and we went to go execute ours. And I think that was a full team effort, coaches and players."

2.Tough team. The Jaguars in a season and a half under Coen have built an identity as a tough team mentally and physically. The Jaguars are 6-2 with a three-and-a-half-game lead in the AFC South – and Coen said after Thursday's victory that toughness in those areas was among the things "I've been pleased with" about this team. "We came in and took care of business and have kind of done that a few times now," Coen said following the Jaguars' second consecutive victory – their fourth in the last five games. "The second-half challenge is going to be being at our best when our best is truly required in some of these games that we have coming up [with] being road warriors in a lot of ways, with one game being played in Jacksonville in a 65-day span. We have to continue to be focused and together as a group on the road."

3.Mudders. The Jaguars have scored 31 or more points in each of their last three games, doing so despite rainy conditions in all three games. They lost to the Houston Texans, 34-31, on a slick field at Wembley Stadium in London Week 6, then beat the Colts in similar conditions at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville this past week. They scored three touchdowns with four field goals on Thursday, a night when the rains came early with little letup throughout. "I'm getting a little frustrated with it," Coen said. "We were blessed and so lucky last year. We didn't play in any poor-weather games. It's a good thing to test your physical and mental toughness and to test your ball security. It's a little annoying at times, for sure, because you want to be able to do some of the things that you're not able to do in some of those moments, like being aggressive and taking more shots down the field. But I thought they handled it for the most part." Said Lawrence, "It's something that you have to just adjust [to] and play in, and you can't let it affect you too much. I thought we managed it pretty well besides a couple series in the second half that weren't great offensively."

4.High, high level. Coen had high praise for Trevor Lawrence late Thursday. Lawrence completed 16 of 26 passes for 242 yards and a 50-yard touchdown to wide receiver Parker Washington with no interceptions Sunday. "He was very on when it was really a game," Coen said of Lawrence. "Like when it was mattering and things were going and it's a back-and-forth football game early on, he was extremely sharp, accurate, and he played a really solid football game for us." Said wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, "It's hard to be surprised by [Lawrence] now. There is something every week that he just, he does something crazy and you're like, 'Alright.'" Coen noted that Lawrence has played particularly well in recent weeks despite slick conditions. "It's such a bonus that he's comfortable with it," Coen said. "He handles it really well at practice. He has big hands, which always helps. He's been accurate and been able to get the ball enough zip to where it still spins, and it's a very catchable ball in the elements."

5.Taming the 'Cat. Ravens running back Derrick Henry rushed for 57 yards on 17 carries Thursday, with the Ravens often snapping directly to Henry in a "Wildcat" formation. The Ravens used this approach extensively with their top two quarterbacks – two-time NFL Most Valuable Player Lamar Jackson and backup Tyler Huntley – placed on injured reserve this week. Henry rushed for 51 yards in the first half. "As the game went on, we started to get a better feel for kind of how they were going to call it," Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker said. "We kind of knew it was going to be a little different play-calling [and] how they were going to call it, but it's all about adjustments in this game, so I feel like we did a great job adjusting and just tightening up in the run game like we did." Said Coen, "I was very pleased with the way they adjusted at halftime to some of the Wildcat stuff, and then they got off blocks better. We also got off blocks and swarmed a little bit better in the second half. But [I am] very pleased with the way the defense played today."
