O-Zone: Good life

JACKSONVILLE – We moved Look-Ahead day from Wednesday to Thursday this week. Call it the beauty of winning on Monday Night Football.

Let's get to it …

JT from Palm Coast, FL

This win was one of the wilder ones I can remember. Absolutely incredible win. So many things were against them and still came out with the victory. Trevor's last touchdown summarized the entire game. These Jags are different, John.

These Jaguars absolutely are different. That has been evident since a Week 1 victory over the Carolina Panthers, and it absolutely was evident in a 31-28 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs this past week on Monday Night Football. Being different doesn't mean they're perfect. The NFL isn't about perfect. This isn't college football. It's professional football – and in professional football, you find a way to win given your circumstances. You try to make key plays at key times, and if you can play situations smartly and efficiently, you have a chance to win more than you lose. The Jaguars through five games are showing they are a good professional football team. They are not only tied with the Indianapolis Colts for first place in the AFC South at 4-1, they are tied with the Colts and Buffalo Bills for the best record in the AFC. Perhaps the most important thing is they are winning with grit, belief and fight. What's going on feels solid for the short- and long-term future. That's cool to see.

Michael from Orange Park, FL

One game doesn't fix all T-Law's faults. We know this, right?

This is fair. While Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence made clutch plays throughout Monday's victory, he indeed played a very imperfect game. There's still a lot of situational stuff – taking penalties at the wrong time and missing throws – that are perplexing at times. Lawrence deserves a ton of credit for a ton of moments Monday. His late 33-yard completion to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. was a big-time throw, and the heart and will to win was uber-impressive. He at the same time must continue to improve for this team to get where it's trying to go. The NFL is a process.

Artie from Buenos Aires, Argentina

The stats won't look sexy, but this game really highlighted the importance of having players that make the big plays when it matters most. Rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter keeping a drive alive with his catch, Thomas catching the bomb on the final drive, linebacker Devin Lloyd shifting the entire momentum of the game with his Pick 6 – and of course, Lawrence playing maybe an average game with mediocre statistics, but making the throws and breaking a tackle to win the game. The stats don't look good, but the players are making plays in big moments ... which is better than them getting great stats.

We talked throughout the 2024 season about players not making big plays in big moments. Players making such plays are why the Jaguars are off to their best start since 2007. It's a league of plays. The Jaguars are making them.

Larry from Cumming, GA

I am not Trevor's biggest fan, nor am I his biggest detractor. I continue to watch him do head-scratching things like let the play clock hit zero time after time. But on Monday I also saw Trevor Lawrence (not for the first time, but for the first time in a while) put the team on his back and lead them to victory. No, he didn't do it alone, but he did do it. I think he has turned that corner we've been waiting for and hoping he could turn. Maybe this year becomes the first year of Trevor being what we hope he can be in Jacksonville.

Stay tuned.

John from Jax

Hi, KOAGF. Lawrence turned would have been a Patrick Mahomes "I-can't-believe-it" play in the recent past into his own. The tide is turning. It's time for the scrutiny on Lawrence's every mistake to stop. Even the best quarterbacks have off moments in games they win. Impressive win!

I don't expect the every-mistake scrutiny of Lawrence to stop. It is the nature of being an NFL quarterback that every play is scrutinized to the point of being over-scrutinized. It is true that Lawrence is sometimes over scrutinized for mistakes all quarterbacks make. It's also true that he's still making too many such mistakes and must improve this area moving forward.

Josh from Atlanta

I have to ask per usual, what time did you make it home and on the couch? No love lost with no O-Zone Late Night. I respect the late-night grind.

I was home around two-ish and after finishing the Tuesday O-Zone – and other work-related activities – in bed around five-ish. It's the National Football League. Fall is not for sleeping.

Marcus from Jax

I almost sent an email to you when we were down 14-0 about how the Jags are still the Jags, but I decided to give them a chance. Glad I didn't embarrass myself…at least in that way.

You'll get there.

Jay from Jacksonville NC

Where would you rank Lloyd's 99 yard INT return in defensive plays in franchise history. I'd put the Mt. Rushmore as Tony Brackens TD dance into the end zone against the Dolphins, Rashean Mathis' return against Pittsburgh in the playoffs, defensive end Josh Hines-Allen's scoop and score to win the division, and Lloyd running the entire length of the field to paydirt.

There were a slew of huge defensive plays in 2017 – so many that it's hard to choose just one. Where would I put Lloyd's return Monday on the list? Up there. Way up there, actually.

Kelton from Three Forks, MT

Trevor had a different look about himself during the game. He had that look that he would do anything to win that game and it came out in his play. There was no sliding on his runs and no holding back on his throws. I think we would have crawled and scratched his way to the endzone on that last play to score. It was the look of a man that would not be denied. And I loved it.

Lawrence played with undeniable heart and "want to" Monday. It's unfair to say he hasn't displayed this before, or that he hasn't played this way before. But it was certainly evident Monday.

Don from Marshall NC

Trevor looked like a bull moose on an icy road there for a moment! This is a very good football team who can beat anyone even when they don't have their A game. Go Jaguars!

When it comes to picturesque analogies, and to accurately assessing the 2025 Jaguars through five games, Don remains "all in."

Pedal Bin from Farnborough, Hampshire, UK

Oh Mighty 'O'/King of all Funk, two hours sleep and staggered into work. What a game. What a statement. What resilience. What a team.

Pedal Bin is liking him some Jaguars.

Dan from Madrid

Great win in front of the Chiefs home crowd. Man, the Jacksonville dudes should start showing up for the home games.

The crowd Monday was decidedly pro-Jaguars. Anyone present felt that, particularly after Lloyd's 99-yard interception return. Traditional teams travel well and will have a representation when playing on the road against so-called "non-traditional" teams. This an NFL thing, not a Jaguars or Jacksonville dudes thing.

Rick from Ponte Vedra

It's fun to say, Stumblerooskie!

Isn't it?

Josh from Lakewood

Helluva win and a helluva game from Trevor. Here's my question: How many Super Bowls do we have to win before we're allowed to just tackle opposing WRs with the ball in the air?

There appeared to be more than one occasion Sunday when officials missed potential interference penalties on the Chiefs. The NFL is a fast game and calls sometimes get missed.

Bob from Coosawatchie, SC

Trevor won me over Monday night. He may never be a Top 3 QB in the NFL but so what? He fumbled at the goal line and came back. Threw a pick in the 4th quarter and came back. Fell down at a critical time and scored. Time to enjoy the season and see where it goes from here.

Fair.

Hobo from Random Locations (KC this month)

How about defensive ends Dawuane Smoot and Hines-Allen on Lloyd's interception return for a touchdown, the left guard Ezra Cleveland and left tackle Walker Little on Lawrence's scramble touchdown. Can we mention the Meat & Muscle guys with the little things that make a play.

One fer Smoot. One fer Hines-Allen. One fer Little. One fer Cleveland. It's indeed the little things that make the difference in the NFL, even for the Meat and Muscle guys.

John from Merritt Island, FL

Zone, I woke up Tuesday morning and the Jags had still won, and Lawrence did not suck. I have to drive to Hilton Head today and stopped at Strings. I ate the fried chicken sandwich, drank a Bullet Bob and shot the bull with Trevor about the game. Is this what they call the "good life?"

It sure doesn't suck.
