O-Zone: More than good enough

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Jeremy from Riverview

That was as lopsided a win as I can remember seeing. Did the Jaguars vent their frustration from the Houston Texans loss on the Chargers? My goodness, coach had his team ready!

There was quite a bit of on-field ventin' going on by the Jaguars in a 35-6 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers at EverBank Stadium Sunday. As much as "ventin', though, what mattered on Sunday was the Jaguars showed themselves to be a good, contending team. It's hard in the NFL to play at a consistently high level. It's really hard to do that in Year 1 of a new regime because there's a lot of adjusting happening. It's really hard to do when you're as injured as the Jaguars are during this current stretch. But the Jaguars on Sunday won a game they really needed to win, and did so with an intensity and an urgency that bodes well for the short- and long-term future. They're good. It's time for the fans – and maybe even the players themselves – to realize that.

Stu from Wrestlingworth, UK

O-Zonius! I wrote to you last week that the Chargers game was a must-win game for the season. My takeaway? This team is inconsistent but I'll take inconsistency this year over the awfulness of last season. On to Arizona!

I wrote last week that the Chargers game was not a must-win game because it wasn't a must-win game. But I also wrote and said it was a game in which the Jaguars needed to play well because they didn't want to have a bad quarter the previous week define how they were going to play the rest of the season. The Jaguars not only played well Sunday, they played one of the best overall games – start to finish, all three phases – in the franchise's last 15 years. As for the Jaguars being inconsistent … sure, they are. You know who else is inconsistent? Just about every team in the NFL. The Denver Broncos might be the best team in the NFL right now. They beat the Las Vegas Raiders two weeks ago in a game in which the offense looked really bad and people are analyzing their quarterback for "inconsistency." It's a week-to-week league. The goal is to win enough to get into the postseason, play your three – or four – best games of the season then and see if that's enough to hold a trophy in February. That's it. That's what all these people are doing with all this time and money.

It's crazy, but it almost seems like any given week most of the teams can beat each other! Good W and response by the Jaguars after the game last week.

Yes, they can. Yes, it was.

John from St Augustine, FL

Who were those guys masquerading as Jaguars? As a wiser man than me once said a thousand times, 'It's a week-to-week league."

The guys in the Jaguars' uniforms Sunday were the Jaguars we have seen all season. They're a good team that's not yet a great team, but they're winning more than they're losing and they're in good position as early November moves into late November. This is the fun stuff.

Tony from The Land of Confusion

Not a question so much as an observation. We need to resign Van Lanen this offseason - dude has been a Swiss Army Knife playing all over the line, and effectively in each position. That's the kind of versatile depth that we need to lock down.

Cole Van Lanen played right tackle Sunday after playing guard against the Texans the previous week. He played very well Sunday. One fer Van Lanen.

Nicholas from Fort Hood, TX

KOAF: An almost 30-point differential, a few errant throws and our franchise quarterback is pulled at the end of the game. Is this the beginning of the end for Trevor?

What? No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. (No.)

Limo from Neptune Beach, FL

Seven of the last 8 quarters have been really great.

One fer Limo Bob.

Paul from Washington, D.C.

The Jaguars on Sunday had 47 carries for 192 yards? How about that (maligned and banged-up) offensive line?

The Jaguars' offensive line was impressive Sunday. The group for the most part has been good to OK this season. It has been less good at times when pre-snap penalties and other mistakes have put the offense in bad down-and-distance situations. The group also has been criticized at times for situations created by quarterback Trevor Lawrence holding the ball too long or moving incorrectly in the pocket. The line also has had a couple of tough games against elite defensive lines. But the offensive line overall has performed well – and at times, such as Sunday, it has performed really well.

Since the question of all-time best beatdowns by the Jags has come up, I thought I'd offer a few for debate: 1999 Miami Dolphins (62-7), 2017 Houston Texans (45-7). It's so rare, but some of those – like the Chargers game a few days ago – will stick in my memory for a while.

This Chargers team was playing better than those teams.

Andrew from Halifax

Hey, O. Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd and defensive end Travon Walker make a difference. That is all.

Apparently.

Jeremy from Gilbert, AZ

When are we putting flags on quarterbacks? The NFL has become pathetically soft and it's not good for the sport.

A roughing-the-passer penalty on Jaguars defensive end B.J. Green II Sunday was … interesting. Green apparently was penalized for landing with his body weight on Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. Herbert from this view jumped into Green and I'm not sure how Green was supposed to play the play differently. It did seem Green on this play was penalized for not being able to hold Herbert up while both players were in mid-air. It was a tough call.

Stuart from Cottonwood AZ

Wasn't able to watch the game but I saw "the adjective" Brenton Strange a bit in the highlights. Any chance his blocking was part of the resurgence? I've heard him called the best blocker on the team.

Strange didn't play Sunday.

Anita from Springfield

Everyone is talking about how this was Head Coach Liam Coen's best play-calling game. You know what helps with that? Not having back-breaking penalties. I hope they keep up the disciplined football!

The Jaguars were penalized one time for five yards Sunday. They also ran well. They were in manageable down-and-distance situations most of the game. It's dramatically easier to call plays when you're running well and in manageable down-and-distance situations. Coaches have far more good second-and-5 plays than third-and-12 plays.

James from Jacksonville

The JAGS had one penalty Sunday. Which was one of the reasons they've been shooting themselves in the foot. How in the world did that happen?

They played better.

JK from NY & Fernandina Beach, FL

Great energy on defense from Travon's sack on the first play to the moment Herbert gave up. Go Jags!

Indeed.

Woody from Dunlap

KOAF: Fantastic win! Amazing win, with seemingly a quarter of our starters unavailable! But I did not sleep well last night, because we are scheduled to face another backup quarterback this coming week! Please, talk me down off the ledge!

The Jaguars' "struggles" against backup quarterbacks are vastly overrated. The Jaguars haven't been all that good against backup quarterbacks in recent seasons. They also haven't been good in a lot of situations in recent seasons. They lost twice to backup quarterbacks this season. It's coincidental. Frustrating? Yes. But coincidental nonetheless.

Artie from Buenos Aires, Argentina

Several times the Jaguars ran this kind of pitch play, but the running back stayed between the tackles instead of going outside. What was that kind of play? I don't know if I've seen it before, but I loved it! Every time it seemed like the running back got to the line of scrimmage with a speed boost, and it seemed to work every time.

It's called a middle toss. Head Coach Liam Coen discussed it Monday: "It just gets the ball back a little bit deeper to them immediately. It gets the ball in their hands with more depth than just maybe a handoff does sometimes. It gives the defense maybe an illusion that it's going wider than it is. It creates a misdirection inside that gets their (the defense's) eyes a little bit dirtier than you're really making it. It was a good job by our offensive line coaches and run-game guys coming up with a scheme and our players going and executing at a high level."

Kyle from Ingalls IN and the mean streets of Arlington

This team was a good team Sunday, not just "good enough."

The difference between good and good enough in the NFL is meaningless. The Jaguars are 6-4 and in contention in the AFC. They're good. Period.
