O-Zone: Sippy Cup

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it

Michael from Orange Park, FL

Weird Conference Championship Sunday. Thoughts?

My first thought is Sunday's AFC Championship Game indeed had a weird feel, with the New England Patriots' 10-7 victory over the Denver Broncos in Denver defined by a driving second-half snow and the Broncos having to start backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham because of an injury to starter Bo Nix. My overriding thought on the AFC remains that any of five teams – the Patriots, Broncos, Jaguars, Houston Texans or Buffalo Bills – could have won it and that New England did an admirable job navigating a balanced playoff field. The NFC Championship Game wasn't really weird at all, with the Seattle Seahawks winning at home, 31-27, over the Los Angeles Rams. I doubt Super Bowl LX will be all that weird, either, and the guess here is Seattle will win comparatively easily.

Another coach that lost a game because he doesn't know how to take three points. Glad it is not just our coach.

You're referencing Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton opting to go for a first down early Sunday rather than attempting a field goal. This didn't work and the Broncos lost. When it works, people don't remember. When it doesn't work, they do.

There are lies, damn lies and "analytics."

Sometimes you eat the bear. Sometimes the bear eats you.

Not sure if we do first ballyhooed emails of the game for non-Jaguar games, but Denver had a very similar situation to our matchup with Buffalo: Fourth-and-1, up seven, with a chance to go up two scores (with a backup quarterback). Would KOAF taken the points there?

Yes – especially if I had a weather app on my phone.

It feels like it's either the Patriots or the Chiefs who go to the Super Bowl for the AFC. What a bore for fans of every other team.

The Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs indeed have represented the AFC in nine of the 10 most recent Super Bowls. The long exception to this dominance was the Cincinnati Bengals winning the AFC Championship following the 2021 season. There's something other teams could do to make the situation less boring. It's a simple solution, though not an easy one.

KOAF: If we lose our offensive coordinator to another team this year, given that our head coach's expertise has been largely on the offensive side of the ball, can we expect that quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Co. will not need to learn yet another new offensive system in 2026?

As long as Liam Coen is the head coach, the Jaguars will run essentially the same offensive system. This is the primary advantage to having a head coach who runs the offense, who is the playcaller and who is essentially the offensive coordinator.

The possibility of losing Camp made me wonder something. If a team loses a successful coordinator and has to find another, shouldn't there be a sense of "if it isn't broke, don't fix it"? In other words, wouldn't it make sense for the new coordinator to come in and make it a point to just keep doing the same things that were working? Or is that already how it works?

You ideally would love a coordinator who runs essentially the same scheme so long as you like how that scheme fits your players, and you would love for that coordinator to be a great coach. Remember: While Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile obviously ran a successful scheme in 2025 and called plays well, the biggest factor that made him successful was players loved playing for him and trusted him. When looking for an NFL coach, look for that first. Often, the rest will take care of itself.

When it comes to Udinski, I, too, hope he stays - or, at least doesn't take the Cleveland Browns' head coaching position. Their owner will meddle all along the way. Case in point: they just fired a head coach who had won NFL Coach of the Year twice as their own head coach for two separate regular seasons. Trevor said when asked about Udinski that "he had never really met anyone like him". I feel like I know what he meant because my first thought listening to him speak during Jaguars YouTube's coordinator press conferences was "this guy's smarter than me." And, I mean - as I'm sure you would agree - there's only so many of us geniuses out there.

Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski is uncommonly smart and detailed – traits that are part of why is considered one of the best assistant coaches on the Jaguars' staff. He reportedly has interviewed twice with the Browns for their head coaching position and once with the Bills for their head coaching position. I trust Udinksi is more than smart enough to decide for himself if a situation is right.

In regard to Jim from Reno, NV's recent post, when thinking of past Jaguars players who were always smiling, the first name that pops into my head is cornerback Rashean Mathis. You just knew that guy was always having fun on and off the field.

Indeed.

John from Jacksonville

If it comes down Etienne or Lloyd, who are you keeping? Wouldn't Lloyd's contract be roughly twice what Etienne would get on the open market? How many years has Etienne been Trevor's running back? Did the New York Giants regret not retaining running back Saquon Barkley? It seems like a pretty easy decision to me. That said, is Ventrell Miller ready to step up. Weren't he and Lloyd co-starters at the beginning of last season?

I expect there's a significantly better chance the Jaguars re-sign running back Travis Etienne Jr. this offseason than re-sign linebacker Devin Lloyd. I will be very surprised if they re-sign Lloyd and a little surprised if they are able to re-sign Etienne.

Oh Mighty 'O'/ King of all Funk, I think you will find Raymond Sis from Windermere, Fl is quite wrong. It was in fact Coach Coen not taking the field goal that caused the Russians to attack Pearl Harbor.

It was always the Russians.

Jaguars General Manager James Gladstone pretty much stated they were going to keep the offensive line intact. When was the last time the Jaguars had the same five starters as the previous year? The backups, too? I'm not surprised with Jaguars Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tony Boselli – a Pro Football Hall of Fame left tackle – giving input.

Gladstone during his postseason media availability indeed noted that the Jaguars' key offensive linemen all remain under contract. I don't know that that means the line next season will look exactly like this past season, but it does give the Jaguars a chance for continuity in the area. How long has it been since this happened. The Jaguars essentially had the same offensive line in 2021 as they did in 2020 – left tackle Cam Robinson, left guard Andrew Norwell, center Brandon Linder, right guard A.J. Cann and right tackle Jawaan Taylor.

Brian from ROUND ROCK, TX

Do you remember when the defense stunk when Lloyd was injured? I do. He is obviously the best player on defense and Top 3 on the team. We get worse if he leaves, period

The Jaguars would like to retain Lloyd. I can't in good conscience say Lloyd is the best player on the Jaguars' defense or a Top 3 player on the Jaguars. I don't expect the Jaguars will be significantly worse on defense next season.

Rob from San Antonio, TX

KOAF. It would occur to me than in his recent O-Zone submission about "The most obnoxious, loudmouthed" fanbase, our dear Freddy misspelled "Pittsburgh Steelers." They are what is known in circles as "the worst."

One not fer Steeltown, I suppose.

Jon from Arcanum, OH

Hey O, was there any talk or rumblings about how Caleb Ransaw was performing before his injury? If my memory is correct, he was making a position change from college. Him and Hunter could be big additions to the defense that are already on the roster.

The Jaguars like safety Caleb Ransaw, a third-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, very much. They believe he will be a front-line starter at some point. They liked how he performed during the 2025 offseason program and were disappointed that he sustained a foot injury early in training camp that ended his season – and prevented him from any significant participating in camp. Yes, the Jaguars expect Ransaw and cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter to be huge additions to the secondary next season.

Me and my buds (meaning me) play us a drinking game where we take a shot each time you answer with either "OK", "Stay tuned" or "I am the king of funk." Does it seem like I'm making good choices?

Stay tuned.
