JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

I hope all the Trevor Lawrence haters out there watched the quarterback performances this weekend and learn to appreciate what the Jags have. Football is hard and there are no perfect quarterbacks!
My experience tells me that those observers who like Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will continue to like him and those otherwise inclined will remain so inclined – and that never the twain shall meet. Whatever observers' inclinations on the topic, the reality is that Lawrence in 2025 developed at a remarkable rate and finished the season as one of the NFL's best quarterbacks. Is he perfect? No – and as you astutely note, this is because there are no perfect quarterbacks. The thought here is that what we saw from Lawrence at the end of the 2025 regular season is sustainable and that he will continue to be one of the NFL's best quarterbacks moving forward. I don't know how that will look statistically. I don't know if the Jaguars will win a Super Bowl with him at quarterback. I know Lawrence, as he did in 2022 and 2023, in 2025 once again absolutely proved you can win with him at quarterback. If he plays as he did late in the regular season, my sense is the Jaguars will have a chance in most games and that they will win a lot more than they lose. I don't know where that ranks him in comparison to other quarterbacks, but I do know that bodes well for the future of both Lawrence and this franchise.

Are our defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator leaving? There were interviews for both. Is this a guaranteed leave or what??
Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile reportedly has interviewed for head coaching positions with the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins. Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski reportedly has interviewed for a head coaching position with the Cleveland Browns. Neither is considered a "guaranteed leave."

One of your qualities that makes this forum worth reading is your reluctance to jump on popular trends after a small period of time. That was why I was taken aback in your confidence that the new, elite Lawrence is now the permanent Lawrence. I'm not saying I disagree, but would you trade Lawrence for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow straight up this offseason?
The answer before the last eight regular-season games would have been a reluctant yes – reluctant because I really like Lawrence but considered Burrow better. Now …

The Denver Broncos took down the Buffalo Bills, and it was intriguing to watch because of our history this season. In the end, it was Bills quarterback Josh Allen's turn to suffer a game-ending interception. I noticed that our run defense stopped the Bills a lot better, but our pass defense couldn't make the key plays at the end like the Broncos did. On Sundays NFC matchup between the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Rams, there were a lot of fourth-down plays and they converted some but didn't convert some. If we converted our fourth-and-1, if Trevor had a neat dive, we could have had a dominating lead. (Insert your bear analogy here). Finally, the NFC Championship matchup is made up of two teams that kicked teal butt — the Seattle Seahawks and Rams. So with the Broncos in the AFC side of the dance, it shows that the Jaguars were a Top-5 team in the NFL but not quite at the peak level. Only unknown is how we would have matched up with the New England Patriots. Can you share your thoughts from the playoff action this weekend when it comes to old foes playing against each other and where we match(ed) up against them?
I think the Jaguars were in a group of five AFC teams – the Jaguars, Patriots, Bills, Broncos and Houston Texans – who could beat any of the other teams on a given day. I'm not sure they would matchup that well against the Seahawks or Rams. We'll never know and that's a shame.

Uh oh, O! With those four turnovers in Denver (two interceptions, two fumbles), should the Josh Allen experiment be over in Buffalo? Can you imagine if Trevor did that?
It would be what is known in some parts as "a topic."

Is it sad I'm glad Texans didn't win? I just want the Jags to make it to the Super Bowl before they do … and hopefully before Trevor retires.
It's not sad at all. Texans-Jaguars has become the defining rivalry of the AFC South. The Jaguars haven't had a lot of compelling rivalries over the years because compelling rivalries only happen when the teams are on even footing and when one team winning takes away what the other wants. Texans-Jaguars unquestionably has escalated to that level. Be glad the Texans didn't win Sunday? Damned right.

Not as much of a question. The minutes after the Jags lost to the Bills my only desire for the rest of the season was that the Texans did not win the AFC. I can now watch the rest of the games as a casual observer. Surely, I'm not the only fan that feels this way. Am I?
You are not. Nothing defines a rivalry like a little childish pettiness. It's good for the soul. And don't call me Shirley.

Do you believe that playing away from Jacksonville next season could affect any of the momentum the team built this year? And do you think there could be a situation where there are more of the opposing teams fans at Jaguars "home" games than actual Jaguars fans? It just seems like a really bad time for them to have to leave, after everything they did this season and the way the whole city rallied behind them.
The Jaguars will play home games in Jacksonville in EverBank Stadium at reduced capacity in 2026. They will play all home games away from Jacksonville in 2027 before returning to play in the renovated Stadium of the Future in 2028.

Watching the games this weekend makes me believe our offensive line was pretty solid.
It was. Absolutely.

Ok, time to shake it off and start looking forward. Any chance Jimmy Gladstone works some GM magic and gets us back into the first round come draft day?
I expect Jaguars General Manager James Gladstone to be characteristically aggressive in the weeks and months leading to the 2026 NFL Draft. I expect that aggression to have an eye on moving up in the draft – perhaps to the bottom of the first round. Considering where the Jaguars select in Round 2 – No. 56 overall – he will have to be very aggressive. It may be too far to move up. Stay tuned.

I think one of the most important details left out of the pressure-versus-sacks conversation is time. Pressure at 2.5 seconds is much different than pressure at five seconds. It's the difference between the safety playing the underneath route versus over-the-top route.
Indeed.

Hey, John. How does the league determine where teams play when they match division rank versus division rank? For example: How was it determined that the Jags would host New England in 2026, but travel to Denver next season? Thanks.
The NFL decides opponents by a rotational formula set years in advance. Whoever won the AFC South this season would have hosted the AFC East champion next season and whoever won the AFC South this season would have visited the AFC West champion next season.

"Draft and develop" is supposedly the best way to build the core of the roster? Yet, when we finally start doing that after failing for decades, we can't afford it? So, we'll let great players walk so we can overpay for good players in free agency? Help it make sense?
I expect a well-known Jaguars player or two to leave as unrestricted free agents this offseason. At least. I don't expect these players to be "core players" at premium positions with whom the Jaguars can not live without. Change is part of every NFL offseason. Whatever the coming weeks bring there's no reason to think the Jaguars can't improve this offseason. Remember: There was hue and cry over last offseason's departures at positions such as wide receiver and tight end. Time and perspective showed us that those departures, while painful, were not impossible to overcome.

Zone. Dare I dream that next year's team could be the best in franchise history? Or is it too early? One never knows what the future will bring. No one predicted results like we have seen this past season.
Stay tuned.
