Roster Moves: Jaguars tender 3 exclusive rights free agents and release one

Roster Moves

JACKSONVILLE The Jacksonville Jaguars have sent exclusive rights tenders to OLB/DE Jamir Jones, LB Chapelle Russell and RB Mekhi Sargent. Additionally, the team released RB Carlos Hyde.

Jones, 6-3, 255, played in 15 games in 2021: three games with the Steelers (Weeks 1-3), 10 games with the Rams (Weeks 5-14) and two games with the Jaguars (Weeks 17-18). He posted six tackles on defense and four tackles on special teams. Jones attended Notre Dame and played in 55 games with the Irish and recorded 50 tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.

Russell, 6-2, 236, has appeared in 27 NFL games, including 16 games in 2021 with the Jaguars. He totaled 14 tackles (8 solo) on defense and four tackles on special teams. Russell attended Temple and played in 45 games with the Owls and recorded 238 career tackles.

Sargent, 5-8, 208, was claimed off waivers by the Jaguars from the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 27, 2021 and played in seven total games in 2021, including one game with the Jaguars. He attended the University of Iowa and appeared in 34 career games from 2018-20, rushing 354 times for 1,801 yards and 20 TDs.

By sending a player with an expiring contract and fewer than three accrued seasons a tender, the Jaguars retain their exclusive negotiating rights.
