Jaguars LB Telvin Smith named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

JACKSONVILLE – Another one-sided victory …

Another honor for one of the Jaguars’ top defensive players.

Telvin Smith, the Jaguars’ starting weakside linebacker, has been named the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Smith’s 28-yard interception return for a touchdown was the momentum-changing play in the Jaguars’ 30-9 victory over the Steelers at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pa., this past Sunday.

Smith, a fourth-year veteran, tied for the team lead in tackles Sunday with 10. He also registered two tackles for loss and a pass defensed. His interception return early in the third quarter gave Jacksonville a 13-9 lead it never relinquished.

The Jaguars intercepted Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger five times Sunday.

Smith also was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Cleveland Browns in November 2014, his rookie season, and for a 2015 performance against the Bills.

Jaguars defensive end Calais Campbell was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his four-sack performance in a 29-7 victory at Houston in Week 1.
