The Jacksonville Jaguars today claimed defensive end Elton Patterson off the Cincinnati Bengals' practice squad and signed him to a contract. Jaguars defensive end Lionel Barnes was placed on injured reserve with an injured shoulder.
Patterson, 23, was originally drafted in the seventh round of the 2003 NFL Draft and spent the entire season on the Bengals roster. He was inactive for all 16 games. He spent the first five weeks of this season on the practice squad. The 6-2, 271-pound defensive end from Tallahassee was a three-year starter at Central Florida where he recorded 30.5 sacks. He will wear jersey No. 78.
Barnes started three games this season with 10 tackles and one sack. The 6-5, 260-pound lineman played in 13 games in 2003 recording 15 tackles and one sack. He was in his fourth NFL season and second with the Jaguars.
