Jaguars rookie QB David Garrard is the November honoree for the Jaguars/Morgan Stanley Community Leader Award, presented monthly during the NFL season to the Jaguars player that demonstrates exemplary community involvement. Other players receiving consideration included WR Micah Ross and OT Mike Pearson.
In partnership with Morgan Stanley, a $500 donation will be made on Garrard's behalf to the Baptist Cancer Institute.
Four players are named monthly winners during the 2002 season. The program concludes in December with a year-end luncheon at ALLTEL Stadium when an additional $3,000 charity donation will be made to the player selected as the 2002 Community Leader of the Year. P Chris Hanson was September's winner and MLB Wali Rainer was the October recipient.
Garrard, a fourth-round draft choice from East Carolina, works with the American Lung Association of Florida by visiting local elementary schools to talk about the dangers of smoking. He also serves as a spokesman for Baptist Cancer Institute, promoting breast cancer education and research, especially among African-American women. Garrard lost his mother to the disease when he was 14.
