In-game blog: Jags vs Dolphins

jaguars.com Senior Editor Vic Ketchman followed the action live as the Jaguars took on the Dolphins at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. Here's what he wrote.

8/16/08 at 5:01 PM

Hi, everybody. It's time to sign on for tonight's live blog of the Dolphins-Jaguars game at "The Jack." I'll be doing pregame radio segments at 5:33, 6:08 and 7:02 p.m. Between segments, I'll update you with any information on tonight's game. Welcome aboard.

8/16/08 at 5:55 PM

With Derrick Harvey still unsigned and no progress to report on that front, all eyes will be on defensive end tonight. Reggie Hayward is out with a hamstring injury, so a lot of young, no-name types are going to get another chance to show what they can do. Last week, it was Mkristo Bruce who stood out. Who will it be tonight, if anybody?

8/16/08 at 6:01 PM

Coach Jack Del Rio said on Thursday that the starters will play a little longer tonight, which probably means they'll play well into the second quarter. Conditioning is an issue in these preseason games because training camp is not the intense place it once was.

8/16/08 at 6:23 PM

The following Jaguars will not play tonight: Reggie Williams, Chad Nkang, Brad Meester, Derek Landri, Jerry Porter, George Wrighster, Jeremy Mincey, Reggie Hayward.

8/16/08 at 6:26 PM

Matt Jones and Dennis Northcutt are listed as the starting wide receivers for tonight's game. Troy Williamson is expected to make his Jaguars debut.

8/16/08 at 6:28 PM

Rookie Phillip Merling is expected to start at right defensive end for the Dolphins.

8/16/08 at 7:41 PM

The Dolphins executed a beautiful three-and-out, plus some penalties, and the Jaguars have the ball for the first time at their 27-yard line.

8/16/08 at 7:42 PM

David Garrard was nearly intercepted on his first throw of the game. He was throwing for Matt Jones.

8/16/08 at 7:43 PM

Garrard to Mike Walker is short of the sticks. The Jags will punt. They, too, executed a beautiful three and out.

8/16/08 at 7:43 PM

Adam Podlesh kicked a stinker. The Dolphins have the ball at their 43.

8/16/08 at 7:44 PM

Quentin Groves started the game at left defensive end in place of Reggie Hayward. This is a major, every-downs look at Groves.

8/16/08 at 7:47 PM

Paul Spicer got a rush on Chad Pennington and flushed him out of the pocket, but nobody else was in the area and Pennington scrambled for nine yards.

8/16/08 at 7:47 PM

Groves was blocked off his feet on third down and Ricky Williams ran around right end for a first down.

8/16/08 at 7:48 PM

Ted Ginn beats Rashean Mathis for a sizeable gain to the Jaguars 24. It was a crossing route that gained 22. There's no rush.

8/16/08 at 7:49 PM

Bad no-call by the officials. Drayton Florence should've been flagged for a facemask penalty. They waved it off.

8/16/08 at 7:50 PM

I guess you have to rip a guy's head off to get a facemask penalty this year. The Dolphins are first and goal at the 10.

8/16/08 at 7:51 PM

Touchdown! Williams right up the middle. That's not the Jaguars defense. Who is that?

8/16/08 at 7:55 PM

Brian Witherspoon returned the kickoff. He flashed some speed out to the 33. He still looks loose with the ball. That's something he may have to work on.

8/16/08 at 7:58 PM

Garrard to Marcedes Lewis gains a first down at the Dolphins 38. There was a pass interference prior to the play.

8/16/08 at 8:01 PM

Garrard's off his game tonight. He's just not sharp. Josh Scobee will try from 51. It's wide to the right.

8/16/08 at 8:05 PM

Justin Durant just made a tackle for a loss that is the best defensive play so far in this game by the Jaguars.

8/16/08 at 8:06 PM

Pennington to Ginn for 17 and a first down at the Jaguars 30. No rush.

8/16/08 at 8:08 PM

That's the end of the first quarter and the Dolphins have a first down at the Jaguars 16 after a sizeable gain on an end around. Garrard isn't the only one off his game.

8/16/08 at 8:10 PM

Kenny Pettway has replaced Groves at end. More on that later.

8/16/08 at 8:12 PM

It's third and three from the nine. Spicer knifes into the backfield to make the stop. Outstanding play by Spicer. Dan Carpenter gives the Dolphins a 10-0 lead.

8/16/08 at 8:13 PM

This is a tape Groves will no doubt study. This was a rookie moment for him. He was blocked.

8/16/08 at 8:14 PM

Pennington looks pretty good. He still can't break a pane of glass but he can nibble a little and hit the slant.

8/16/08 at 8:14 PM

Witherspoon does it again. He's out to the 43. He's the star of this game for the Jaguars so far.

8/16/08 at 8:18 PM

The Jags are going for it on fourth and two at midfield.

8/16/08 at 8:19 PM

Garrard had Walker wide open deep and overthrew him. Miami takes over at its 49.

8/16/08 at 8:19 PM

It was a very aggressive play-call by offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and it should've been an easy touchdown throw. Hey, if you're gonna have a bad night, the preseason is the right time to have one.

8/16/08 at 8:20 PM

Chad Henne has replaced Pennington, who was five of six for 55 yards.

8/16/08 at 8:22 PM

Henne can break a pane of glass; a pane of plexiglass.

8/16/08 at 8:22 PM

Florence broke up a third-down pass. Witherspoon back to receive the punt.

8/16/08 at 8:24 PM

What an awful punt, plus a 15-yard kick-catch interference, which makes the punt a net of 13 yards. So much for all of those special teams only practices.

8/16/08 at 8:25 PM

Richard Collier is at right tackle and Khalif Barnes remains at left tackle. Garrard is still in the game. He needs to execute a drive.

8/16/08 at 8:26 PM

Sack by Matt Roth. I believe that was Barnes' guy.

8/16/08 at 8:27 PM

This is a different Dolphins team than the one I saw last year. This one plays hard.

8/16/08 at 8:27 PM

Garrard finds Matt Jones on a curl for a first down at the Jaguars 49.

8/16/08 at 8:29 PM

Garrard got hammered as he threw the ball. It's roughing the passer; first down at the Dolphins' 31.

8/16/08 at 8:29 PM

Channing Crowder hit Garrard in the head. That was the call.

8/16/08 at 8:30 PM

Garrard threw behind Lewis. His timing is off.

8/16/08 at 8:31 PM

Garrard scrambles for a first down at the 20.

8/16/08 at 8:34 PM

Fourth and one at the 11. Garrard throws to Greg Jones for a first down at the three.

8/16/08 at 8:36 PM

It's second and goal from the two. Timeout. Matt Jones was one-on-one on a small cornerback by the name of Andre Goodman. It would've been a major mismatch.

8/16/08 at 8:39 PM

Fumble out of the back of the end zone by Maurice Jones-Drew. It's a touchback.

8/16/08 at 8:39 PM

Roth forced the fumble. He's having a big night.

8/16/08 at 8:41 PM

Henne to Ginn. What a throw by Henne. Now they're calling it incomplete. We might get a challenge on this one.

8/16/08 at 8:42 PM

Tony Sparano is challenging. He got em both down. It would be out of bounds at the Jaguars 25. It's all a matter of establishing possession, I think.

8/16/08 at 8:43 PM

The ruling stands. Ginn didn't establish possession. He beat Mathis.

8/16/08 at 8:46 PM

We're at the two-minute warning. Miami has a first down at its 42.

8/16/08 at 8:50 PM

Henne to Ginn for a first down at the Jags 44.

8/16/08 at 8:50 PM

Henne throws a dart while on the run. First down at the Jags 32.

8/16/08 at 8:51 PM

Timeout with 58 seconds to play. Henne is a talent. The Dolphins have something worthy of investing time and development.

8/16/08 at 8:52 PM

Two runs! What is this, surrender?

8/16/08 at 8:53 PM

They were just letting the clock run out. There are only eight secons to play now.

8/16/08 at 8:54 PM

Henne throws a quick out. Here comes the field goal team. That's weak on the Dolphins' part. Carpenter is good from 46. It's 13-0.

8/16/08 at 8:55 PM

Garrard was seven of 14 for 63 yards and a 62.5 passer rating. The Jaguars ran for only 29 yards and Garrard gained 10 of that on a scramble. Not good.

8/16/08 at 8:56 PM

Dolphins fans should be encouraged. They've got a great situation at quarterback. Pennington is the perfect veteran to buy time as Henne develops.

8/16/08 at 9:09 PM

Much will be written and said about the failure of the offense tonight, but it's the other side of the ball that has me concerned.

8/16/08 at 9:11 PM

Cleo Lemon throws to D'Juan Woods for a gain of 31 to the Miami 47. It was a rainbow but it worked.

8/16/08 at 9:13 PM

Walker makes the catch and a nice run afterward. That's the best play of his pro career. He made two guys miss.

8/16/08 at 9:14 PM

Walker made a diving touchdown catch.

8/16/08 at 9:14 PM

Sorry, Walker nearly made a diving touchdown catch. He didn't maintain possession when he hit the ground.

8/16/08 at 9:15 PM

Lemon is intercepted by Joey Thomas. He threw behind John Broussard. Miami is at its 33.

8/16/08 at 9:16 PM

Ladies and gentleman, Mkristo Bruce is on the field.

8/16/08 at 9:18 PM

Henne looks lighter and better conditioned than I remember him from Michigan.

8/16/08 at 9:18 PM

The one guy who played well for the Jaguars tonight is Paul Spicer.

8/16/08 at 9:19 PM

The Jaguars' number three defense is getting run over by Patrick Cobbs.

8/16/08 at 9:20 PM

Henne put it right on a tight end's hands and he dropped it at the Jaguars 25.

8/16/08 at 9:25 PM

Three and out by the Jags. This one isn't going to sit well with Jack Del Rio. He'll use this one, I'm sure, as a point of reference. It could have a purging effect.

8/16/08 at 9:33 PM

The Dolphins are going to attempt a field goal. By the way, Ernest Wilford caught a couple of short passes. Carpenter is good from 44, 16-0, with 3:07 to play in the third quarter.

8/16/08 at 9:34 PM

The Dolphins are going to surprise some people this year. This is a team on the rise.

8/16/08 at 9:37 PM

Players sure look different in the games than they do in OTAs.

8/16/08 at 9:40 PM

Lemon to Walker for a first down. I'm OK with Walker tonight. He's getting into the flow. He's showing his upside.

8/16/08 at 9:42 PM

Broussard dropped a pass that would've gained a first down. The Jags will have to punt. This will be the final play of the third quarter.

8/16/08 at 9:43 PM

That's the play of the night. Podlesh kicked it 54 yards and out of bounds at the four-yard line. I'll bet you feel better now.

8/16/08 at 9:47 PM

Come on, Mkristo.

8/16/08 at 9:48 PM

Henne never had these many passes dropped at Michigan.

8/16/08 at 9:52 PM

The Dolphins have to be feelin' real good about Henne. He's 14 of 21 for 114 yards. He's their future.

8/16/08 at 9:53 PM

He lasted into the second round. How could that have happened?

8/16/08 at 9:55 PM

Carpenter kicks another field goal; 16 plays, 77 yards.

8/16/08 at 9:57 PM

I think of a team like Kansas City passing on a quarterback of this caliber and I understand why they can't seem to fix their quarterback situation long term. Quarterbacks trump everything. You have to have the man and you don't dare pass on one when you have the chance.

8/16/08 at 9:58 PM

Folks, I'm gonna be shuttin' down soon and moving downstairs for postgame interviews. My work is pretty much down for tonight. Todd Bouman is in the game. Bye.
