In-game blog: Jaguars at Falcons

jaguars.com Senior Editor Vic Ketchman blogged the Jaguars - Falcons game, providing instant analysis and insight. Here's what he had to say/
8/31/2006 5:43 PM
(pregame) -- The expectation is that the Jaguars' starters will not play tonight. I'll try to get an official confirmation within the hour.

8/31/2006 6:36 PM
(pregame) -- None of the Jaguars starters will be in the starting lineup. David Garrard will be the starting quarterback.

8/31/2006 7:09 PM
(pregame) -- The changes in the Jaguars lineup are too many to list. I'll tell you that LaBrandon Toefield is the starting running back, Rich Alexis is the starting fullback, and Cortez Hankton and Chad Owens are the starting wide receivers.

8/31/2006 7:10 PM
(pregame) -- Not in uniform tonight: Mike Peterson, Gerald Sensabaugh, Dan Connolly, Marcedes Lewis, Marcus Stroud and Walter Curry.

8/31/2006 7:43 PM
(kickoff) -- Atlanta receives. They're at their 20. Matt Schaub is the quarterback.

8/31/2006 7:46 PM
(First down at Jags 35) -- It's reserves vs. reserves and the Falcons' reserves are moving the ball with ease.

8/31/2006 7:49 PM
(Touchdown) -- Schaub 15-yard pass to Fred McCrary for the score. McCrary ran through Nick Greisen. The drive was 80 yards, 7-0.

8/31/2006 7:57 PM
(three and out) -- At least David Garrard got in a good scramble before the Jags punted. The Falcons will start at their 24.

8/31/2006 8:01 PM
(Punt return) -- Chad Owens returns a low punt 12 yards to the Jaguars 45.

8/31/2006 8:07 PM
(Jags recover fumble) -- The Jaguars will get the ball at the Falcons 27 on a fumble of a punt return that involved a Jaguars player being pushed into the Falcons returner.

8/31/2006 8:09 PM
(first down at 15) -- Garrard converts on third and three with pass to Owens.

8/31/2006 8:11 PM
(interception) -- Garrard is intercepted in the end zone following a long scramble and a tipped pass. He's scrambling too much. He's got to stay in the pocket and get the ball to a receiver.

8/31/2006 8:12 PM
(coach's challenge) -- Jack Del Rio is challenging the ruling of interception.

8/31/2006 8:13 PM
(play stands as called) -- The Falcons have the ball at the Jaguars 20. The Jaguars lose a timeout on the failed challenge.

8/31/2006 8:18 PM
(sack) -- Tony McDaniel sacks Schaub. That's the Jags' 15th sack this preseason.

8/31/2006 8:19 PM
(Garrard incomplete) -- He had Todd Yoder wide open and overthrew him. David looks unsettled.

8/31/2006 8:20 PM
(busted play) -- Garrard had no one to hand the ball. He ran for eight yards; third and two from Jags 30.

8/31/2006 8:21 PM
(end of first quarter) -- The Jags were outgained 125-14 in the first quarter. The reserves are not playing up the standard they had set in the previous three games.

8/31/2006 8:23 PM
(punt) -- Montell Owens made a nice play to take down the Falcons punt-returner for no gain.

8/31/2006 8:26 PM
(Falcons running the ball) -- An 18-yard run; the Falcons have rushed for 80 yards so far.

8/31/2006 8:30 PM
(strange crowd) -- This is a strange environment. The biggest cheer of the night was for a third-down pass that was short of the sticks. They ooh and aah on every tackle as though tackling isn't allowed. I feel as though I'm covering a preseason game that's being played in a non-NFL city.

8/31/2006 8:31 PM
(long run) -- Maurice Jones-Drew just went through a big hole on the right side for 39 yards to the Atlanta 30.

8/31/2006 8:32 PM
(screen to Jones-Drew) -- A gain of 13 to the Atlanta 17. Garrard sold it well.

8/31/2006 8:33 PM
(you gotta run harder than that, son) -- Jones-Drew lost two around the left. He slowed down to watch blocking. That won't work. Just hit it.

8/31/2006 8:35 PM
(field goal) -- Garrard pushed out of bounds following scramble on third down. Josh Scobee's field goal attempt was tipped but it cleared the uprights, 7-3.

8/31/2006 8:39 PM
(gain of 21) -- Pass puts Falcons at their 41. D.J. Shockley is at quarterback.

8/31/2006 8:41 PM
(Jags ball) -- Shockley's got a nice arm and mobility. He wants to run too much, however, and he just fumbled the ball away to the Jags at the 50. Brent Hawkins forced the fumble; Dee Webb recovered.

8/31/2006 8:42 PM
(Hawkins sack) -- That's the rookie's third of the season, though Shockley sort of caused that sack by stepping into the rush instead of staying in the pocket where he belonged.

8/31/2006 8:47 PM
(Another Hawkins sack) -- That's his fourth of the preseason. That one was legit.

8/31/2006 8:52 PM
(two-minute warning) -- The Jaguars are at the Falcons 20, second and six.

8/31/2006 8:54 PM
(Garrard scramble) -- He runs to the 11 for a first down.

8/31/2006 8:55 PM
(touchdown) -- Garrard to Charles Sharon at 1:13 of the second quarter. That was a nice throw to the back-right corner of the end zone. Sharon may have just earned a place on the practice squad.

8/31/2006 8:59 PM
(halftime) -- The Jaguars lead 10-7. They rallied from a horrible start.

8/31/2006 9:06 PM
(want a sleeper?) -- I'll give you a sleeper. Montell Owens is having a sensational game covering kicks. Owens was converted from running back to safety in training camp, but he could make this team covering kicks.

8/31/2006 9:08 PM
(stats) -- Garrard is six of 13 for 44 yards, one touchdown, one interception, 48.2 passer rating. The leading rusher for the Jaguars is Jones-Drew with 58 yards.

8/31/2006 9:13 PM
(Second half begins) -- Quinn Gray is at quarterback.

8/31/2006 9:17 PM
(Owens drop) -- Gray hit Owens near the goal line but Owens bobbled and dropped the ball. The pass was a little behind him.

8/31/2006 9:18 PM
(Hankton gains 25) -- Gray throws to Cortez Hankton; nice grab and run.

8/31/2006 9:20 PM
(He stayed in there) -- I give Gray credit on the incomplete third-down pass. He stayed in the pocket and took a hit, but still got the ball out.

8/31/2006 9:21 PM
(field goal) -- Scobee good from 43 yards. That's an important kick for Scobee. It gives him momentum going into the regular season. The Jags lead, 13-7.

8/31/2006 9:23 PM
(Scobee's ready to go) -- He's boomed his kickoffs and converted his field goals.

8/31/2006 9:28 PM
(nice-looking backs) -- The Falcons have some young backs who can run. I like the kid from Saginaw Valley, Marlion Jackson. He's tough like Paul Spicer.

8/31/2006 9:35 PM
(Pearman has value) -- Alvin Pearman is a dependable punt-returner and a resourceful running back who can catch the ball. There's nothing flashy about him but he gets the job done. He's playing well tonight.

8/31/2006 9:39 PM
(That's what you get) -- Gray left the pocket, he had nowhere to go and he threw a careless interception. That's what turns coaches off. Stay in the pocket and throw it away. Execute the play, don't make a new one.

8/31/2006 9:40 PM
(analysis of Gray) -- Gray can go to the next level, which means becoming a backup quarterback, but to do that he has to avoid throwing interceptions. It held him back in Europe a few years ago.

8/31/2006 9:46 PM
(That's the problem) -- Shockley stayed in the pocket that time and looked terrible throwing the ball. Some guys have to throw on the run. Those guys don't last long in the NFL.

8/31/2006 9:49 PM
(field goal) -- A 44-yarder by the Falcons, 13-10, Jaguars.

8/31/2006 9:56 PM
(Gray to Hankton) -- That's Hankton's best play of the preseason. It gained 33 to the Falcons 20.

8/31/2006 9:57 PM
(replacement players) -- Folks, what you're watching is "replacement player" football. Is it really that bad?

8/31/2006 9:59 PM
(How about that Maine Bear?) -- Montell Owens is at running back and doing a nice job. This is his night. He's been given an opportunity and he's seizing the moment.

8/31/2006 10:00 PM
(touchdown) -- Gray to Sharon for another touchdown. This one is seven yards. Sharon's got that corner route down pat. Jags 20, Falcons 10.

8/31/2006 10:04 PM
(time to say goodbye, I hope) -- Barring something unforeseen, this freaking game is over, which is nice. I'll be heading down to the locker room soon. After a slow start to the blog preseason, I feel as though I've worked myself into shape for the season-opener. I'll have my best adjectives and adverbs ready for Sept. 10.

8/31/2006 10:11 PM
(touchdown) -- Shockley to Kevin Youngblood for 13 yards. Please, no. I wanna go home. Jags 20, Falcons 17.

8/31/2006 10:14 PM
(how about this?) -- Youngblood is from Jacksonville. He's 6-5 and wearing number 17, which was worn by Harold Carmichael, who was from Jacksonville. Just a coincidence?

8/31/2006 10:17 PM
(big play) -- Gray to Sharon on third down. Gain of 26. Big night for Sharon. He had to have earned something. Nearing the two-minute warning, that should do it.
