JAGUARS BEGIN 1998 PRE-CAMP

The Jacksonville Jaguars completed the first day of their four-day pre-camp today at the Ferrell Fields adjacent to ALLTEL Stadium.

Head coach Tom Coughlin set forth the objectives for this four-day camp. "We continue to push forward, and obviously the objectives are many," said Coughlin. "One is that the way the league is set up now, with the young players being so critical, we have decided to take the majority of the 14 days allowed by the league in June. The idea is to let these young people hear the system more than one time. Bryce Paup and some of the other new veterans will pick it up faster because they have heard it before. The young players the first time have to have it pounded away at them. The second thing I want is to continue to develop the confidence in the guys who were hurt and had surgery as we increase the number of reps that these guys have.

"In addition, we want to attack some strategic areas with this camp. We want to make sure we concentrate and improve on the red-area, both offense and defense. Third down is an area of emphasis as well. We will work the two-minute area also. We also want to, as quickly as possible, integrate the young players into the team concept to create a positive atmosphere out here. Those are the kind of things that we are trying to accomplish with this camp."

The four-day pre-camp will continue Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with all practices beginning at 10:10 a.m. Coach Coughlin is available to the media at 12:00 noon on the field, and the locker room is open for media interviews from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. All practices are closed to the general public.
