Jaguars Friday: "Practice the Right Way, Prepare the Right Way …"

FRIDAY NEWS

JACKSONVILLE – The work is done, and the Jaguars are ready for some football.

The Jaguars (2-1) will play the Cincinnati Bengals (2-1) at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sunday in a 2026 Week 4 game, with the Bengals having won the last four meetings between the teams – including a 31-27 Bengals victory in Cincinnati in Week 2 last season.

"The guys did a nice job of attacking the week the right way," Head Coach Liam Coen said.

Coen in recent weeks has emphasized the importance of good practice weeks, the sort that the Jaguars turned in a week ago leading to a one-sided home victory over the defending AFC Champion New England Patriots.

Coen on Friday spoke positively of this week's practices.

"They worked," Coen said. "[Thursday] was physical. It wasn't all perfect, but started with special teams. I thought our special teams period [Thursday] was arguably one of the better ones we've had since we've been here together as a group."

Sunday's game marks the first of three consecutive games away from Jacksonville for the Jaguars, who know what to expect from the Bengals' crowd and stadium Sunday.

"This atmosphere last year, if you guys remember, was pretty gnarly," Coen said. "They had a great turnout for this game last year, made it challenging in some ways in terms of communication."

Jacksonville has sharpened its pre-snap process offensively since that second game under Coen. The Jaguars enter Sunday as one of the NFL's least-penalized teams through the first three weeks of the season.

They also have the experience of playing tough games on the road under Coen, playing twice in Denver during his tenure and winning last season in Denver and San Francisco.

"All of that stuff that you're doing has to be that much better," Coen said of playing in raucous road environments. "It has to be that much more detailed. It has to be that much more synced up because there's no room for error when the center has his head between his legs and you've got timely motions happening and fast motions.

"If you mess one of those up, the ball's hitting the motion guy or something happens. Those are things you just don't really deal with at home. It is a lot about the balance of coaches not putting too much on these guys, especially going on the road, but also feeling like you have enough ammunition going into the work week."

NOTABLE

  • After Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. was targeted one time against the Patriots, Coen said the third-year veteran had a "great week" of practice.

"He had a really good day yesterday; Trev (quarterback Trevor Lawrence), he connected on a number of passes yesterday," Coen said. "Thought he has responded in a great way and continues to do so.

"Going to need him. We're going to need all these guys to obviously continue to make plays for us out on the perimeter. Need him to continue to do that."

NOTABLE

The Jaguars' rushing attack has been one of the NFL's most efficient this season, with second-year running back Bhayshul Tuten one of five running backs with at least 65 rushing yards in all three games. The others: Kenneth Walker III of the Kansas City Chiefs, Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts, Bijan Robinson of the Atlanta Falcons and Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens. Coen on Friday discussed the process that led to the Jaguars selecting Tuten in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. "[General Manager] James [Gladstone] brought him up very early in the scouting process, like really very early as somebody that we should potentially target," Coen said. "He never wavered throughout the whole process. As you watched more and more, it kind of became apparent the yards that he got on his own in a lot of ways and what he was able to do when maybe it wasn't blocked perfectly to get positive yards and to stay on track and on schedule." Added Coen, "We have to continue to look at ways of getting him more ops and cleaner through the first and second level so that he can take advantage of some of the speed that he has and the long speed that we've all seen, just haven't been able to see it yet in a game."

NOTABLE

Cornerback Montaric Brown (hamstring) was one of three Jaguars players listed as questionable on Friday's third and final injury report of the week, with the others being rookie nose tackle Albert Regis (elbow) and cornerback Christian Braswell (knee). Six players were listed without game status and are therefore expected to be available to play Sunday: Running back LeQuint Allen Jr. (hip), wide receiver Jakobi Meyers (thumb), right tackle Cole Van Lanen (knee), nose tackle DaVon Hamilton (back), cornerback Jarrian Jones (hip) and rookie right end Nate Boerkircher (illness).
