The Jacksonville Jaguars have made six roster moves today, placing linebacker Tony Gilbert on injured reserve, placing defensive end Brian Smith on the physically unable to perform list and waiving placekicker Aaron Elling, who signed with the team on Aug. 10. The Jaguars signed linebackers Chris Claiborne and Kevis Coley and defensive tackle Joe Anoai.
Gilbert suffered a biceps injury in the Jaguars' win last Thursday at Green Bay. The fifth-year veteran had played in the last 56 consecutive games for the Jaguars since signing with the team on Oct. 29, 2003. The 27-year-old Gilbert was the Jaguars' leading tackler on special teams last season.
Claiborne, 29, played in four games last season after signing with the New York Giants on Oct. 30, 2006. The 6-3, 255-pound linebacker had played with Detroit, Minnesota and St. Louis before signing with the Giants. He has played in 105 career games with 567 tackles, 15 sacks and eight interceptions since being drafted out of Southern California with the ninth overall pick by Detroit in the 1999 NFL Draft. He will wear jersey No. 46 and tight end Greg Estandia will now wear jersey No. 83.
Coley, 25, spent the final two months of last season on the Jaguars practice squad after signing on Nov. 8. The 6-1, 230-pound linebacker was originally signed as an undrafted rookie by the New York Giants out of Southern Mississippi. He played in 50 games in college with 237 tackles and seven sacks. He has a twin brother, Trevis, who was also signed by the Giants last April. He will wear jersey No. 48.
Anoai, 22, originally signed with Minnesota this year as an undrafted rookie free agent but was waived on May 30. The 6-3, 280-pound lineman was a three-year starter at defensive tackle at Georgia Tech and earned All-Conference honors as a senior in 2006. He started 37 of 48 career games and recorded 108 tackles, 29.5 for a loss, 12 sacks and recovered four fumbles. He will wear jersey No. 49.
The Jaguars' roster now stands at 86 players, and the team has until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday to get down to the 75-man roster limit. The Jaguars NFL Europa roster exemptions expire on Tuesday. The deadline for final cuts to 53 is Saturday, Sept. 1.
