JAGUARS SIGN ASKEW, WHITE

The Jacksonville Jaguars today signed wide receiver Chad Askew and re-signed defensive end Jose White.

Askew, 25, spent the 1995 season on the New York Jets¹ injured reserve list with a knee injury after being signed as an undrafted free agent. He did not play football in 1996. He played four years at the University of Pittsburgh, catching 27 passes for 394 yards and three touchdowns as a senior in 1994. The 6-4, 200-pound Askew is a native of Aliquippa, Pa.

White, 23, spent the final four weeks of the 1996 regular season and the postseason on the Jaguars' active roster, although he did not appear in any games. He was signed off the New Orleans Saints' practice squad and was previously on the New York Jets¹ practice squad last season after spending training camp with the Minnesota Vikings. With Minnesota in 1995, he was inactive for the first three games of the season and spent the remainder of the season on the team¹s practice squad. The 6-3, 274-pound White was a three-year starter at Howard, where he holds the school career record for sacks with 31. He was the conference¹s Defensive Player of the Year in 1994.
