JAGUARS SIGN BATTLE, WAIVE VON DER AHE, HIRE COHEN

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed wide receiver James Battle today,

filling a roster vacancy that opened when linebacker Scott Von der

Ahe, who was signed last Thursday, was waived. The team also

named Scott Cohen to the position of assistant director of pro

personnel.

Battle, 6-2, 200, was waived by the Oakland Raiders last week after

being signed as an undrafted rookie in April. He was a two-year

letterman at Oregon State. In 1998, he caught 31 passes for 563

yards (18.2 average) and two TDs. The 23-year-old Battle is a

native of Pittsburg, Calif.

Cohen, 30, spent the last six years working in both college and pro

scouting with the Washington Redskins. He was a college scout in

1997 and '98, the team's BLESTO representative in 1995 and '96,

and in 1993 and '94 he was with the team in administration and

scouting and working as the training camp director. Cohen was a

four-year letterman at Dickinson College, and he earned a master's

degree in sports management at the University of Massachusetts.

He and his wife, Linda, have a daughter, Hannah.
