The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed wide receiver Emanuel Smith to a contract. Smith was selected by the Jaguars in the sixth round of the April 15-16 draft and was the 196th pick overall. Length and terms of the contract are not disclosed.
Smith was a four-year letterman at Arkansas, with career totals of 101 catches for 1,233 yards (12.2-yard average) and four touchdowns. He was the second of two wide receivers chosen by the Jaguars in the 2000 draft after No. 1 pick R. Jay Soward. He will compete for a backup role at wide receiver and on special teams.
With the signing of Smith, the Jaguars now have signed nine of 11 draft choices and have 79 players under contract. Still to be signed are Soward and seventh-round pick Danny Clark, as well as defensive end Tony Brackens, who was designated as a franchise player.
