Jaguars sign kicker

The Jacksonville Jaguars today signed placekicker Danny Boyd and activated cornerback Steve Smith from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

Boyd takes the roster spot of Richie Cunningham, who was released yesterday. Boyd spent the preseason with the New York Jets but was waived in the final cuts after scoring 16 points on 4 of 4 extra points and 4 of 6 field goals. He was a four-year letterman at Louisiana State from 1996 through '99. He played for the Baton Rouge (La.) Blaze in the arenafootball2 league and for the Berlin Thunder of the NFL Europe League in 2002. At LSU, he scored 111 points, mostly handling kickoffs and extra points (he was 34 of 42 on extra points and 3 of 9 on field goals). In the NFLEL, he was 10 of 19 on field goals and and nine of nine on extra points for 39 total points, but he kicked field goals of 47, 45 and 38 yards in Berlin's 26-20 victory over the Rhein Fire in the World Bowl. In the afl2 in 2001, he scored 118 points on 12 of 34 field goals and 82 of 89 extra points and was named second-team All-afl2. He led the team in extra point percentage, fourth in field goal percentage and fourth in scoring. A 5-11, 216-pounder from Bradenton, he will will wear jersey No. 5.

Smith has spent the entire season on the team's practice squad after being waived in the final cuts on September 1. He was a seventh-round draft choice in April out of Oregon, where he was a four-year letterman. The Jaguars signed wide receiver Corey Parchman to the practice squad. Parchman was with the team in the preseason.
