The Jacksonville Jaguars today signed second-round draft choice Maurice Williams, an offensive tackle from the University of Michigan. They also signed linebacker Joe Wesley to a contract.
Williams is a 6-5, 304-pounder who will compete for the starting job at right tackle. He seeks to become the fourth rookie in franchise history to start opening day on the offensive line, joining Tony Boselli and Brian DeMarco in 1995 and Brad Meester in 2000.
Wesley, 6-1, 234 pounds, played this spring for the Berlin Thunder in the NFL Europe League. He signed as a rookie free agent with the San Francisco 49ers in 1999, starting the year on the practice squad before seeing action in eight games, primarily on special teams. He spent the first four weeks of the 2000 season on the 49er's injured reserve list before being waived on September 26. Wesley, 24, led Louisiana State in tackles as a senior in 1998 and started every game as a junior and senior.
