Jaguars Thursday: "Just Go Out There and Compete …"

JAGS THURS

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars on Thursday practiced at the Miller Electric Center.

The Jaguars (2-1) will play the Cincinnati Bengals (2-1) at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, Sunday in a 2026 Week 4 game. A look at Thursday around the Jaguars – with Offensive Coordinator Grant Udinski and Defensive Coordinator Anthony Campanile speaking to the media before practice and wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter among players speaking following practice:

Hunter is coming off his biggest week at corner since the Jaguars selected him No. 2 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Playing a career-high defensive snaps in Week 3 against the New England Patriots, Hunter recorded the first interception of his career in a clutch moment in the red zone.

"Just go out there and compete," Hunter said. "Just be the best person I can be, and we just got to go out there and do our job."

The Jaguars' entire secondary faces a significant challenge Sunday in Bengals All-Pro wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase. But the Jaguars have kept their focus internal in each of their victories this season, and that is how Hunter is preparing for Sunday.

"It's really not about him right now," Hunter said. "We just have to do our job. He's going to do his thing, but we just have to contain him and just be able to do what we do."

A reason the Jaguars lead the NFL in points allowed is the defense's red-zone performance. They have held opponents to the second-lowest red-zone efficiency (20.0 percent) through Week 3, recording key red-zone turnovers in back-to-back weeks with interceptions from the secondary.

"They're not in until they're in," Campanile said Thursday. "And I think those guys have a mentality in that room of continuing to play the next play."

Red-zone defense often comes down to making a stop at a critical time, such as in Week 2 when cornerback Jourdan Lewis intercepted Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix in the end zone shortly before halftime. Or last week, when Hunter did the same thing to the Patriots to ensure the Jaguars kept their 14-3 lead entering halftime.

"That's really more of a credit to the character of the guys," Campanile said. "They're locked in, whether it's first down, second down, third down, fourth down. In the low red, they know if they do their job, they trust one another that the guy next to them is going to do his.

"All great defenses are built on trust. And I've said this to you guys before, but trust is gained in drops and it's lost in buckets."

NOTABLE

The Jaguars' offense has a big challenge – literally and figuratively – Sunday in Bengals nose tackle Dexter Lawrence. Lawrence has been one of the NFL's best defensive tackles since he entered the league in 2019, earning three Pro Bowl honors and two second-team All-Pro selections in the process.

Lawrence will be a test for the entire offensive line, particularly rookie guard Emmanuel Pregnon. Pregnon, who will make his fourth NFL start Sunday, in three games has faced such top-level tackles as Zach Allen of the Broncos and Milton Williams and Christian Barmore of the Patriots.

"That's invaluable; you can't really replicate that experience," Udinski said.

Udinski said being tested early will help Pregnon in the long run.

"It's great to have that early in the season as opposed to you playing the same scheme or the same exact defensive tackle for the first four weeks and then late in the season you're trying to figure out something that's totally different once you've fallen into a rhythm of it," Udinski said.

"For him to get out there and face those different techniques, face those different types of plays really invaluable and it's awesome to see the way he's embraced all the different challenges on a week-to-week basis, things changing."

NOTABLE

The Jaguars on Thursday released their second of three injury reports for the week, with seven players listed as practicing limited for a second consecutive day: Running back LeQuint Allen Jr. (hip), wide receiver Jakobi Meyers (thumb), right tackle Cole Van Lanen (knee), nose tackle DaVon Hamilton (back), cornerback Christian Braswell (knee), rookie nose tackle Albert Regis (elbow) and cornerback Montaric Brown (hamstring).

Cornerback Jarrian Jones was listed as practicing full for a second consecutive day with a hip injury and rookie tight end Nate Boerkircher was listed as missing practice with an illness.
