Jaguars Waive Jones

Damon Jones, the Jacksonville Jaguars' backup tight end, was waived by the team today. Jones, 27, was in his fifth NFL season after becoming a fifth-round draft choice in 1997 out of Southern Illinois.

The 6-5, 272-pound Jones, who was placed on the waived/injured list with the league office, had missed two games this season with a shoulder injury and was doubtful for this Sunday's home game against the Baltimore Ravens. He missed 15 games last year after suffering a knee injury on opening day of the 2000 season.

In four-and-a-half seasons with the Jaguars Jones played in 50 games, starting in 22. He had 41 receptions for 550 yards with 11 touchdowns including one in this year's season-opener against Pittsburgh.

Jones was to become an unrestricted free agent following this season. He was not immediately replaced on the roster.
