The Jacksonville Jaguars today waived center David Kempfert and replaced him on the roster with Jeff Smith, a veteran center/guard who spent the last four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kempfert made the Jaguars' 53-man roster after having spent of all last year on the practice squad and parts of the '97 season on practice squads in St. Louis and Seattle.
Smith, 27, was a seventh-round draft choice in 1996 out of Tennessee, where he started all 47 games in which he appeared. He played in all 16 games in 1999, and in four seasons he has seen action in 31 games, making five starts at right guard. The 6-3, 324-pound Smith is a native of Decatur, Tenn., where he was All-State and four-time All-District selection at Meigs County High. He was released by the Chiefs on Sunday in their final cuts.
Editor's note: Smith will wear jersey No. 73.
