Mathis signs extension

The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed cornerback Rashean Mathis to a contract extension, the team announced today. Mathis, a third-year pro out of Bethune-Cookman, has started all 32 games in his career. He grew up in Jacksonville, where he attended Englewood High School.

Mathis started his first six games at free safety in 2003 before moving to cornerback for the last 26 starts. He has 126 career tackles, seven interceptions, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. His five interceptions last season tied for the team lead with Donovin Darius.

Mathis was originally drafted by Jacksonville in the second round (39th overall) of the 2003 draft. He was the seventh cornerback selected and was the third-highest defensive back drafted by the Jaguars in team history behind Darius and Fernando Bryant.
