Mathis wins defensive honor

Jaguars cornerback Rashean Mathis was today named by the NFL, the AFC Defensive Players of the Week. Mathis turned in a complete performance last week, registering seven tackles, an interception, a forced fumble, and an additional pass defensed as the Jaguars upended AFC South rival Tennessee on the road, 15-12.

The 6-1, 200-pound Mathis was a key part of a defense that limited Tennessee to only 143 passing yards. The win was Jacksonville's first in The Coliseum and the team's first on the road against the Titans since 1998 in Vanderbilt Stadium. Jacksonville is 3-0 for the first time since 1998 when the club finished 11-5 as division champions.

In his second season from Bethune-Cookman, this is Mathis' first career Player of the Week Award.
