JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Hey, John. The two things I am looking for this season are the reduction of pre-snap penalties and a better pass rush on third downs. I know it is early, but is there anybody you see stepping up as that third pass rusher? I really like when defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile puts defensive end Travon Walker next to defensive end Josh Hines-Allen. If we had somebody on the other side, I really think the pass rush would be special. As far as the uniforms go, I would like to see a teal helmet with an all-white Jags logo on it.
A few thoughts on your thoughts/questions. One is that the concern about pre-snap penalties isn't nearly as high around the Jaguars this offseason as it is among some observers. This is because while this was an issue early last season, it wasn't remotely as glaring late and the Jaguars finished the season as one of the NFL's best, most-efficient offenses. The pre-snap issues also were largely a product of quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the rest of offense learning a complex new offensive system that depends on complex pre-snap motion. This area that improved organically as the 2025 regular season continued should continue to do so. As for the third pass rusher … that does remain an area to watch. Veteran Dennis Gardeck can play a role there, and there will be training-camp competition at the spot featuring young players such as B.J. Green, Danny Striggow, Wesley Williams and Zach Durfee. I do expect Walker next season will play next to Hines-Allen a lot on the inside, where he excelled late last season. Regarding a teal helmet with an all-white Jags logo … you be you, I guess. Mine is not to stifle creativity. It's important in the O-Zone to be nice. So, I'll just try to be nice.

When it comes to points and field goals, maybe look more at extra-point kicks: A 33-yard kick could be worth one point, a 55-yard kick could be worth two points and a 60-yard kick could be worth three points. The league wants scoring. This might provide more lead changes early and more drama in the fourth quarter of games if a team is down by seven, eight or more points. The key being teams have to score a touchdown to trigger the risk-reward kick. Creating more coaching options with a lean toward tradition and away from gimmicks.
I don't doubt some people would like to see this. Still, if leaning away from gimmicks is the objective, moving extra points to add points and make "dramatic" rallies even more commonplace than they have become perhaps is leaning in the wrong direction.

"Smiles and snuggle bunnies!" Good one, John.
I am the king of all smiles and snuggle bunnies.

Hey, O. Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen said that last year Branson Combs was "close to getting claimed," so they activated him. Do teams get a heads up somehow if one of their players might get claimed?
You're referencing Coen recently speaking about second-year linebacker Branson Combs, who spent the first two-and-a-half months of the 2025 season on the practice squad. While players don't get "claimed" off the practice squad, other teams often do try to sign practice-squad players. When that happens, teams can sign the player to the active roster to retain the player or offer the player a contract to stay on the practice squad. Combs certainly is good enough that teams would approach him. He's also good enough that the Jaguars would sign him to retain him. Which they did.

USA versus Australia. Us by a million. That is all, as you were.
Cape May Court House is in the United States, I'll assume.

When a player sits out of mandatory minicamp or training camp, you hear of all the fines they incur. Do these fines actually get paid or does the team forget about them once the player returns?
Players with unexcused absences from minicamp and/or training camp face mandatory fines that the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association mandates may not be waived, reduced or forgiven.

This might finally be the year the Jags ... steal the show
Good one, Dave.

John, you are such an integral part of the team. I am surprised you do not wear a jersey on game days. Why is this? Would you get in trouble if you did start wearing a jersey? If you did, what number would you wear?
I am not integral. I do not play in the games. I do not coach. I entertain and inform. Some days I am better at those things than others. I do not wear jerseys on game days. I do not own a Jaguars jersey. I would not get in trouble for wearing a jersey. I would just look ridiculous – more ridiculous, even, than I look already. If I wore a number, it would be zero. If I had a position, it would be left out. I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam I Am.

What sign is Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence for zodiac sign?
Libra.

What about "I?"
We have arrived at "I" in this discussion of best Jaguars players with a specific last initial, with relatively limited possibilities including linebacker Clint Ingram (2006-2009), cornerback Rod Isaac (2011) and running back Chris Ivory (2016-2017). The nod goes to Ingram, I guess.

I'm hearing a lot of soccer people compare the US Men's National Team to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Enough talent on paper to win it all, but they haven't proven they can or will. Sound about right?
I haven't heard that.

Who's the best player in Jaguars history to don No. 48?
Wow. We indeed have reached No. 48 in this ongoing offseason O-Zone discussion of best Jaguars players to ever wear a specific number, which means we are kinda sorta close to halfway through this exercise. Possibilities here include long snapper Jeremy Cain (2009-2012), linebacker Leon Jacobs (2018-2020) and linebacker Chad Muma (2022-2024). I guess I will go Jacobs here. Or Muma. Or Cain.

Does Tony sing as well as Andrea?
Probably.

Oh Mighty 'O' / King O All Funk, you missed out on selecting special teams on your all-time roster. I would argue it is the current special teams roster. Also: Doug from Jacksonville is a heretic and a blasphemer for his views on the Prowler jerseys. Those jerseys are good enough for Jehovah!
I would argue that Josh Scobee is the kicker, but I also would argue that Cam Little is very good and could be the kicker if the discussion were to happen in a season or two. Also: One fer the Prowlers, evidently. And not one fer Doug from Jacksonville.

With the Worlds Cup upon us, I can't help but wonder if the Jaguars stadium of the future is going to be configured to handle the width required for top level international soccer games to be played there.
Yes, it will.

What's the all-time best Jaguar uniform? Mine is the black on black from the aughts. You could perhaps even convince me that the two-tone helmet would have worked with the gold on that suit. Is yours still that color rush mustard madness?
Black on black was cool. Fans presumably liked it. But nothing beat the mustard color rush. That was high-end stuff.

Zoney, King of All Things Funky. I believe I heard a sound bite from Jimmy Stones where basically he said this most recent draft of older mature rookies was to supplement the roster with cheap ready to play talent because of the current salary cap situation. If this memory is correct, what does that imply for the next season or two if the Jags are being extremely proactive to get the cap where this new regime wants it. With out getting into contract particulars, how is the cap space/health looking like over the next two to three seasons at the current time?
Better.
Limo Bob from Neptune Beach/Piscataway
I agree with your best Jaguars player list. What would be your all-time disappointment list?
I really wanted to see Elvis Costello at the O'Connell Center in Gainesville on the Imperial Bedroom Tour in August 1982, but I had just started driving and my mother would not let me and my friend Brian Kane drive there by ourselves. That was really disappointing at the time. It still kind of chafes me, if I am being honest.
