O-Zone: Sad in Any Language

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Kenneth from Jacksonville

Good stuff on Wednesday, huh?

My Scooby Sense – and not my Scobee or Spidey Sense – tells me you are referencing Wednesday's joint practice between the Jaguars and Carolina Panthers at the Miller Electric Center, and from this view Wednesday indeed was "good stuff" for the Jaguars. The practice not only featured unusually intense hitting, it also appeared to feature high intensity and energy – as well as a significantly higher level of execution – from the Jaguars. Head Coach Liam Coen made clear he wasn't thrilled with a joint practice against the New Orleans Saints last week. While that practice wasn't tragic, he wanted the ensuing weeks to be better. Wednesday against the Panthers absolutely was better, with Coen particularly pleased with the running offense. This may have been the best – and most physical – work for that area to date in Jaguars 2026 Training Camp. The offensive line had a very good day. The defense also played aggressive and physical, appearing to get good pressure consistently on Panthers quarterback Bryce Young. The defensive line, particularly ends Travon Walker and Josh Hines-Allen and tackle Arik Armstead, had a very good day. The offense also looked particularly good during a red-zone period, scoring on five of six plays. This isn't to say Wednesday was perfect, but Coen wanted improvement and energy. He got it, which made Wednesday a good and productive day.

"Alex, I'll take trades for $1,000." "The answer is 'Where's the beef?'" "What is 'On his way from New York', Alex?"

The Jaguars on Wednesday traded a sixth-round selection in the 2027 NFL Draft to the New York Giants for guard Daniel Faalele. The Jaguars have had extensive short-term issues on the offensive line throughout training camp. When you have extensive short-term injuries on the offensive line, you sometimes trade for veterans. He's a very big (6-feet-8, 380 pounds), very experienced (35 NFL starts) offensive lineman. Mission accomplished.

The best locker room leaders are the quiet ones. They talk softly and to the player who needs it and lead by example on the field.

This is the case as often as not.

O, here is hoping that the Jags don't play any starters during preseason. I am guessing Coen scheduled low-risk joint practices to give his starters playing time without having to insert them into a preseason game, where the risk of injury is much higher.

The Jaguars didn't play starters in Preseason Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints. Coen has said they won't play starters in Preseason Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He said early in the week he might play starters in Preseason Week 3 against the Panthers Friday but said Wednesday he is not so sure. The decision will be based a lot on Wednesday's practice and because Wednesday's practice from this view was good maybe he will lean toward not playing starters Friday. Stay tuned.

Any updates on the entire offensive line?

Guard Patrick Mekari underwent back surgery recently and I expect he will miss extended time before returning during the regular season. Guard Wyatt Milum missed practice Wednesday. My sense is that tackle Cole Van Lanen is getting close to returning from the Physically Unable to Perform list. It seems there is a decent chance the Jaguars' starting offensive line will be left tackle Anton Harrison, left guard Emmanuel Pregnon, center Robert Hainsey, right guard Ezra Cleveland and Van Lanen at right tackle. That's a projection. It's only a projection.

Yes, it was one preseason game, but I have watched a lot of running backs during the Jaguars 30-plus years and J'Mari Taylor from my view has enough talent and enough meat on the bone to be a good NFL running back. How does a player like Taylor, that appears he could be a real contributor early in his career, be so overlooked by all teams during the draft? What was the knock on Taylor? It looks like an excellent pick up even though it is very early days.

Jaguars rookie running back J'Mari Taylor, a collegiate free agent following the 2026 NFL Draft, was a very good college running back who probably went undrafted because many perceived the '26 draft to be a weak at the position. As I have written before, I expect he might have been drafted in the sixth or seventh round in a different year. Why wasn't he drafted? Some analysts thought he was perhaps too small or that he just didn't have that "superpower" trait that teams seek when selecting players late in the draft. Whatever. It appears Taylor can contribute in the NFL. That's all that matters once the draft ends.

Big O, Parker is looking like a must sign wide receiver, but thinking logically about his situation, wouldn't it be better to make him earn the new contract this year by waiting and making him prove it on the field before handing him a sack full of cash? Motivation at an all-in level of what could be might make him play to a higher degree than if he wasn't facing a new contract.

Jaguars wide receiver Parker Washington appears to be as motivated a player as I have been around in a long time. I do not worry about his level of play being different if/when he signs a long-term contract. It is fair for a team to want a player to produce an elite-level season over the course of an entire season before paying him elite-level money.

Fred from Naples, FL

I don't know that Parker Washington betting on himself this year is in his best interests in hopes of securing a new contract in 2027. We are loaded at receiver and that is not even counting Travis Hunter who will be listed as a defensive back in terms of player positions when it comes down to cut time. It's possible he may have a great year with only about 50-60 receptions and 700 yards because of our quality depth at the position. It's also not counting our tight end and running back depth. I wish we could figure out a way to pay him now. Certainly, Parker's representation must be aware of this dilemma as well.

I'm sure they are.

V from Night City

I've been away a while and apologize if this has been covered. How much does the previous regime's handling of the checkbook affect negotiations with Park?

Contracts signed affect the salary cap in a big way for two or three seasons or so and less after that, so the previous regime's decisions certainly still affect the current salary cap. At the same time, it's not fair to assume that the Jaguars and Washington would have agreed to a contract at this point if "pre-existing" contracts had been different. Teams when signing players also must assess how the contract will affect the cap moving forward and whether a salary fits into the overall structure. Without knowing Washington's demands and the team's perception of those demands, it's hard to know precisely why an extension has not yet been reached. It takes to sides to agree, though I believe the Jaguars and Washington eventually will agree – and I expect Washington will be with the Jaguars for the foreseeable future.

Are we sure that Shadrick didn't take a job as Gene's Limo driver?

Former longtime Jaguars Media member J.P. Shadrick did not take a job as the limo driver for former longtime Florida Times-Union sports columnist/Northeast Florida cultural icon Eugene P. "Gene" Frenette. That's a rumor. It's not a terribly hard rumor to believe, but it's nonetheless a rumor.

Artie from Buenos Aires, Argentina

Ok, these "what's a.... [INSERT SUBJECT OF THE QUESTION]?" responses are getting old. "What's a discussion board?"; "What's a favorite part of the job?"; "What's a Shadrick?" If you don't want to answer the questions, just don't post them. But your readers are sending them with genuine interest in a real response?

What's "staying in your lane?"

Bill from Ponte Vedra, FL

Liam's pressers are good, but I often have trouble hearing the questions. Anything technical the team could do to improve this?

Fans, viewers, readers and normal people mention this on occasion. While media availabilities over time have come to serve as "live" entertainment for fans, their purpose is for working media to ask questions for written and broadcast stories. Microphones are common for home teams following games because these are in formal, indoor settings. This is trickier following road games and training camp because the availabilities are less formal.
