O-Zone: Rookie mistake

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Jim from Jax

Although we lose two home games to London and have six weeks in a row with no games in Jacksonville, the NFL looks out for us fans. You can point out to your readers that they scheduled two of the three preseason games at home in Jax this year. Can't wait to watch more meaningless games at EverBank! Thanks, NFL! So thoughtful (sarcasm, in case anyone couldn't tell).

Your sarcasm indeed was fairly evident to all – but while your anger was also evident, the reality here is that the latter was misplaced and perhaps not particularly reasonable. First, the Jaguars' longest stretch without a Jacksonville game in 2026 is four weeks – not six – though it is true that the stretch of one Jacksonville game in eight weeks from late September to late November is unusually long and a bit unfortunate. The stretch includes the following four consecutive weeks with no game in Jacksonville: At the Cincinnati Bengals (Week 4), home against the Philadelphia Eagles at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London (Week 5), home against the Houston Texans at Wembley Stadium in London (Week 6) and a bye week (Week 7). But the NFL didn't "do" this to Jacksonville and the Jaguars – and the NFL schedule is neither a punishment nor a sign of the league not thinking about the fans. The Jaguars in this instance wanted – and requested from the league – an extended period with no home games to allow for an extended midseason stretch of construction inside the stadium. "One of the reasons that was important is because we have to have all of our preliminary work done by the end of the 2026 season, because once the season ends, things go really gangbusters," Jaguars President Mark Lamping said earlier this offseason. Is this long stretch with no games in Jacksonville ideal? No. But without it, the Jaguars likely would have played all games in Orlando in 2026 in addition to doing so in 2027. Reality is often about tradeoffs and that was the Jaguars' tradeoff in this case.

How many games can the Jaguars win? They gutted the defense and offense. I predict 3-14 this season.

I expect the Jaguars to win at least 10 or more games in 2026. I expect this because I know the Jaguars in no way, shape nor form "gutted" the offense or defense this offseason – and because I know there is every chance the Jaguars will be better offensively and defensively in 2026 than they were in 2025. I will be stunned if the Jaguars go 3-14 in 2026.

What will the refs focus (and call innumerable penalties) on this season? Illegal procedure (i.e. when the running back starts the play on the wrong foot)?

We usually get a better idea of this closer to – or early in – the season. Stay tuned.

Do you think the Jaguars and city will bid to host another Super Bowl and – if yes – what do you think the odds are for Jacksonville hosting a second Super Bowl?

I do not expect the Jaguars and the City of Jacksonville to bid for – or host – a Super Bowl in the foreseeable future. This is not because of any limitations on the Stadium of the Future, but because the City of Jacksonville does not currently have the infrastructure – read: high-end hotel rooms – to make this feasible.

I really can't stand how Gladstone communicates (the lingo man, it's seeping into Head Coach Liam Coen even) but I love what he is saying (we have a specific plan and vision for the team). I can deal with the lingo.

I am sorry you don't like how Jaguars General Manager James Gladstone communicates – and I suppose it's understandable given that he does speak somewhat differently from many NFL coaches and general managers. When something's different, it can be off-putting. But communication is about clarity, ease-of-understanding and directness of message. Whatever people can understand easily is good communicating. Gladstone in that sense is on a level of the best communicators I have been around in three decades covering the NFL. Does he use "unique" lingo at times? Sure. Do you understand what me means when he uses that lingo? Almost always, and that's the measure of an effective communicator.

Coaches film is available for anybody that is willing to pay for an NFL-plus premium subscription. I personally like doing deep dives on all centers and how fast they break off the snap.

I'll just bet you do.

Does Travis Hunter have the stuff to be a "lockdown" corner? Could he be the next Deion Sanders?

Jaguars wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter absolutely has the ability to be a perennial All-Pro selection at cornerback. This may not be as much a pure all-time, lock-down, takeaway-an-entire-side-of-the-field corner on the level of Sanders as much an elite playmaker with great instincts and playmaking ability. This doesn't mean he won't be one of the NFL's best cornerbacks – just that his "superpower" may be making plays on the ball a little more than following receivers all over the field.

While we're at it, can we at least get a definitive answer on the greatest Jaguar ever to wear 00?

No Jaguars player ever has worn 00. Players who have won 0: Wide receiver Calvin Ridley (2023), wide receiver Gabe Davis (2024) and linebacker Devin Lloyd (2025). Answer: Lloyd, relatively definitively.

What's so difficult to understand about the NFL's schedule release being bigger and bigger every year? I would imagine that more tickets are bought in the month following the schedule release than at any other time of the year.

Good eye.

Looking at the draft makes me think the tilt towards two-or-three tight end sets might have more to do with playing teams that attack our quarterback. If the offensive line is stouter against the opposing teams' attacking defense (think Houston), we will be a bit better off in both the passing game and running game. Don't you think? Houston mauled us at times.

I think it is hard to be better than every opponent at everything in the NFL because the salary cap and free agency mean it's very difficult to be dominant/elite in every area. The Houston Texans are an elite defense, and they are probably going to maul you at times no matter how good you are on the offensive line. It is just as true that it's hard for a secondary to stifle the Cincinnati Bengals' wide receivers – Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins – on every play. It was hard for opponents to completely shut down the Jaguars' offense last season because quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the group were developing toward an elite level. But yes … if the offensive line can be a bit stouter against elite, "mauling" defensive lines the Jaguars' offense will be a little better. You're always looking for improvement in those elite-versus-elite matchups. On such incremental advantages can memorable seasons be built.

What?

Zone! I get it. I really do. Having games played overseas must be a bit of a wrench for fans who have grown up having eight home games every season, and probably three or three away games within reach. Two home games in London? Gut-wrenching. But spare a thought for those of us who have to appreciate NFL from afar. We LOVE that the league - and in particular, the Jags - loves coming to London and puts so much effort into putting on a show for us. The London games are an amazing spectacle involving so much more than the game itself, and you truly get to see all 32 jerseys at every game. I've been hooked on NFL since the 1980s (we used to get one weekly TV roundup show!) and I plan work around making sure I can get to the Jags' London game(s) every year. The two home games in London serve a purpose in terms of stadium construction, but more importantly, give me a chance to yell myself hoarse in front of the Jags twice this year, so I'm pumped! So, from me - and I think I speak for every UK Jags fan here - a huge thank you; we appreciate your sacrifice. Also, whilst I agree the schedule release isn't as big a deal as many in the media make out, I will be hanging on the 2028 release as I'm planning to pay it back by coming over to see a game or two in the stadium of the future. Maybe an away divisional game too, if the schedule gods are cool. DuuuuuuuuuvvvvvAl! Also: I'm aware my previous submission simply said "Zone" Please don't tell everyone what a doofus I am ;)

Woops.
