O-Zone: Sitting and grinning

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Tom from Moncks Corner

This team looks just like last year: Turnovers, no defense, poor execution. The coaching staff reminds me of Gus Bradley – more interested in being friends than being good. Why in two games has Lawrence not even attempted a pass longer than five yards? It is looking like we will be needing a quarterback next year.

I expect this email would baffle me except not much baffles me after 15 seasons writing the O-Zone. The Jaguars on Sunday tied the New Orleans Saints 17-17 in Preseason Week 2 at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, La., a game in which positives and good signs were by any measure the Jaguars' story of the day. Starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence completed eight of 10 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown, leading two efficient drives. His lone mistake was trying to hand the ball to running back Tank Bigsby while Lawrence was falling, a play that resulted in an ugly lost fumble that prevented the Jaguars from scoring on after a strong opening drive. Aside from that, the Jaguars' first-team offense and defense dominated – and the defense overall didn't allow a touchdown until :21 remained. The Jaguars led 17-3 at halftime, after which mostly reserves played. I frankly haven't the foggiest idea what the reference to former Head Coach Gus Bradley means, but I do know this coaching staff's focus is to be good – and it damned sure wasn't a friendly atmosphere around the Miller Electric Center this past week. That "unfriendly" approach by all accounts resulted in a cleaner, more-focused effort in Preseason Week 2 than we saw in Preseason Week 1. This overall was a solid performance with far more bad than good. It didn't from this view look like last season, but we all see life through different lenses.

WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST KICK THE FIELD GOAL WITH 9 SECONDS LEFT???? Seriously, what could the rationale be??

I received multiple versions of this email immediately following Sunday's game. This is because Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen eschewed a 60-yard field goal by kicker Cam Little with :09 remaining and the score tied 17-17. This decision drew ire because Jaguars kicker Cam Little kicked a 70-yard field goal in Preseason Week 1 – and because rookie quarterback Seth Henigan threw an interception on the play after Coen eschewed the kick that ended the Jaguars' chance to win. Remember, though: While Little's 70-yarder would have set the NFL record by four yards had it been in the regular season, and while 60 yarders are increasingly common in the NFL these days, a 60-yard field goal nonetheless is by no means easy. It's not a chip shot. Even for Little, it's probably about a little more than a 50-50 kick. Trying to gain five or six more yards isn't ridiculous and is probably the right play.

Pete from Daytona Beach, FL

Why not hand the ball off and let Little kick a 58-or-so yard field goal? Stupid!!

Because a 58-yard field goal is not automatic.

How is the competition between Luke Fortner and Monheim looking?

I expect Jonah Monheim to be on the roster this season. I don't know if that technically will be the backup center or as a reserve. The Jaguars reportedly are trading Fortner to the Saints in a deal that will bring defensive tackle Khalen Saunders to the Jaguars.

Progress O? I thought the offensive line protected well and the running game was solid. It is tough to judge as New Orleans does not appear to be a good team.

You accomplish what you can accomplish against whoever the opponent plays in the preseason. The Saints played few front-line players Sunday, but the Jaguars' front-line players played well. They played with urgency defensively. The offensive line, while without one or two starters in Chuma Edoga and Anton Harrison, pass- and run-blocked well. A solid day.

Hi, John. I thought you might appreciate google's AI response to me trying to find out more about 'K Lovely Jags' after his pick. Here it is: The term "k lovely jags" likely refers to the Jacksonville Jaguars, an American football team in the NFL. It's a playful, informal way of expressing appreciation for the team or its players. For example, someone might say "k lovely jags" after a good play or a win.

I did sort of appreciate this.

All losses hurt, even during preseason. I'm willing to bet all Jag fans went back in memory to the Patriots/Seahawks Super Bowl. Anything but a turnover. Last turnover was on coaching. This loss was on them. What say you?

I say it was a tie, and I saw losses and/or ties don't really hurt in the preseason. Even the victories don't feel all that good. At least not the next day. Or even that day, really. There's no reason to have special good food at lunch the next day after a preseason victory and there's no reason to scream and yell because of a loss. Learn, evaluate, be glad if you're uninjured and get the heck home.

Objective journalism teaches you not to jump to dramatic conclusions that are based on assumption, theory or opinion – and to wait until you know facts. Brilliant! Can you please share this with just about every journalist in the country! My goodness! You rock KOAF! Go Jaguars!

When it comes to understanding that I am awesome, Don remains "all in."

So, can we talk about the debacle at running back for a second? Pass protection is obviously a big thing for running backs. Do you think Lequint Allen forces them to keep him on the 53? I don't think we can get away with stashing him on the practice squad. The Jags screwed themselves before trying to hide players on the practice squad. I hope they don't try that again!

The Jaguars have five running backs – Travis Etienne Jr., Tank Bigsby, Bhayshul Tuten, LeQuint Allen Jr. and Ja'Quinden Jackson – that they like a lot. This is what's known as a "good situation" and not a "debacle." I think the Jaguars will keep Allen on the active roster because he's worthy and will play a key role. I don't expect him to be released and signed to the practice squad.

It feels like a lot of folks are panicking, and I'm actually still quite optimistic! This staff is new and there will be growing pains, but I like how they're handling things and ensuring the basics are solid. DUUUUVAL!

Let's go Jaguars.

King of all Funk, I know just a preseason game, but with the best field-goal kicker in the game, why was the ball even in the air on the last play!!

Go to your nearest high-school football field. Stand on the 50-yard-line and look yonder toward the goal post. It ain't close.

James from Socorro, NM

This is year five for Trevor and he's still making dumb turnovers?

He did Sunday. He needs to not do this often going forward.

Holden from Callahan, FL

Outside of the fumble, I was pleased with how the starters looked on both sides of the ball yesterday. Cut the penalties in half, first-team offense responded well after the fumble, and the defense held them to field goals for the majority of the game. Gotta clean up the turnovers moving forward, and coaching them on how to finish. From the outside, it looked like the team takes coaching well, is that the reception from inside the building?

The Jaguars responded well to a week of intense focus from the coaching staff this week. That focus was on playing a cleaner game. Sunday was by any measure cleaner than Week 1. That's a good sign.

Ed from Ponte Vedra Beach

Not unhappy with the outcome. But Coen looked too happy all the time. Defense coordinator not very happy - Loved that.

OK, I guess.

JT from Palm Coast

I see a few encouraging things about this team. Our first-team offense can move the ball really efficiently, the first team defensive line can get to the quarterback and our special teams is All Pro. Gotta clean up some of the offensive mistakes, but that is what preseason is for. That first drive didn't encourage me, but there are many reasons to be optimistic about this team.

The first drive should have encouraged you. The Jaguars moved efficiently, which means the first offense has moved well on all three preseason possessions. No three and outs, drives deep into opponents territory, 10 total points. If the offense plays like that all season, this team will score.

Tony from Johns Creek, GA

O, the first team did what we fans wanted to see. Outside of the unfortunate fumble, the starters won the first quarter. No drive killing penalties. I'm a happy armchair quarterback!

Now we know.
