JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars' offensive backfield got deeper Monday.
The backfield also got a player with NFL starting experience – and one with extensive experience in the AFC South.
Running back Alfred Blue, a sixth-year veteran who spent his first five NFL seasons with the Houston Texans, signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent Monday.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
"I'm honored to be a part of it," Blue said of the Jaguars' organization upon signing. "One thing about the Jaguars is they do have a hell of a defense. That's a good thing and I'm glad to be a part of it."
Blue (6-feet-2, 225 pounds), 27, a sixth-round selection by the Texans in the 2014 NFL Draft from Louisiana State University, started 16 of 73 games played with Houston. He has rushed for 2,407 yards and eight touchdowns on 673 carries, with 470 yards and two touchdowns on 69 receptions.
Blue's most productive season came in 2015, a season in which he rushed for 698 yards and two touchdowns on 183 carries and caught 15 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. He started nine of 16 games that season.
Blue rushed for 499 yards and two touchdowns with 20 receptions for 154 yards this past season, starting two of 16 games.
Blue's signing gives the Jaguars five running backs on the roster: starter and third-year veteran Leonard Fournette, Blue, fourth-year veteran Thomas Rawls, second-year veteran David Williams and first-year veteran Dmitri Flowers.
