JACKSONVILLE – Senior writer John Oehser and Jaguars analyst Bucky Brooks examine the Jaguars' quarterback position in this position-by-position look at the '23 offseason:

Position: Quarterback.

  • Position coach: Mike McCoy.
  • 2022 starters: Trevor Lawrence (17).
  • Others: C.J. Beathard, E.J. Perry, Nathan Rourke.

2022 At A Glance

The Jaguars' '22 season was about the development of a young team under a first-year head coach – and at the same time, it was about the development of Lawrence. The No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lawrence improved dramatically in Year 2 and made his first Pro Bowl appearance. After throwing 12 touchdown passes and 17 interceptions and enduring difficult situations on and off the field as a rookie, Lawrence showed significant flashes in the first half of the '22 season, then improved steadily and dramatically in the second half of the season. Lawrence, after throwing for 10 touchdowns and six interceptions in the first eight games, threw for 15 touchdowns and two interceptions as the Jaguars won seven of their final nine regular-season games – and his passer rating of 104.6 from Weeks 9-18 was the NFL’s best during that span. He also showed significant progress as a late-game, come-from-behind quarterback with three fourth-quarter comebacks in the last nine games and another in the postseason. He was named AFC Player of the Week twice, and rallied the Jaguars from a 27-point first-half deficit with touchdown passes on four consecutive drives in a 31-30 home victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in an AFC Wild Card Playoff game. Lawrence finished the 2022 season completing 387 of 584 passes for 4,113 yards and 25 touchdowns with eight interceptions. His yards per attempt improved from 6.0 as a rookie to 7.0 in his second season and his passer rating improved from 71.9 in 2021 to 95.2 in 2022 – the third-highest increase in passer rating for a quarterback in NFL history from a rookie to a second season. He also rushed 62 times for 291 yards and five touchdowns.

Offseason Storyline

This is a fairly straightforward offseason for the Jaguars at this position. Lawrence for the first time in his NFL career will enter an offseason in a familiar offensive system, and he will spend the offseason further developing in Head Coach Doug Pederson's system under returning offensive coordinator Press Taylor and returning quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy. The Jaguars coaches and Lawrence will have a chance to further hone the offense around what Lawrence likes, and Pederson believes Lawrence will benefit from that continuity for a Year 2 jump in the system in 2023. Also worth watching: How the Jaguars handle Beathard, the Jaguars' backup the past two seasons who is scheduled to become a free agent at the March 15 start of the 2023 NFL League Year.

Free agents as of March 15: Beathard.

Bucky Brooks' Top Three Free-Agent Quarterbacks:

  1. Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders
  2. Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers
  3. Baker Mayfield, Los Angeles Rams

Bucky Brooks' Top Three Collegiate Quarterback Prospects:

  1. CJ Stroud, Ohio State
  2. Bryce Young, Alabama
  3. Will Levis, Kentucky

Oehser Analysis: This position feels the same as this time last offseason – and at the same time, it feels dramatically different. Lawrence, after showing remarkable poise and maturity as a rookie, flourished in Pederson's scheme in 2022. As he grew more comfortable in the offense, Lawrence's fundamentals improved and his accuracy improved correspondingly as the season continued. The Jaguars at the start of the 2022 offseason had a quarterback with enormous potential, and a player they believed could be an elite quarterback and franchise foundation player. Now, at the start of the 2023 offseason, they have a player who has shown real signs of fulfilling that potential and is on the cusp of becoming one of the NFL's elite players at the sport's most important position. Lawrence at his best in 2023 was as good as any quarterback in the NFL. His task now is to approach that level more consistently, something that should happen as he gains experience in Pederson's system and continues to develop in an offense that will have continuity next season at all offensive skill positions.

Brooks Analysis: Lawrence took a significant leap as a sophomore starter for the Jaguars. The former No. 1 pick played like a Top 5 quarterback down the stretch, exhibiting the poise and playmaking skills to put the offense on his back in the clutch. With Lawrence flashing superstar potential during a solid postseason run, the Jaguars' QB1 has the team on the verge of joining the heavyweights in the AFC. Beathard is a solid backup with the experience and intelligence to run the offense in a pinch.
