Special teams standout Montell Owens has signed a contract extension with the Jaguars. Length and terms of the extension are undisclosed. The 28-year-old Owens was originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Jaguars in 2006 out of Maine.
Owens, who will enter his fourth season in 2009, has been captain of the special teams unit and has recorded a team-high 45 special teams tackles over the last three seasons. The 5-10, 225-pound fullback was named to USA Today's 2008 All-Joe Team, which goes to players and coaches who overachieve or are often overlooked. The Wilmington, Delaware native has played in 46 career games with the Jaguars.
Owens has served as the team's backup fullback for the past three seasons and received extensive playing time in 2008 after starter Greg Jones suffered a season-ending injury in Week 13. Owens rushed twice for 43 yards and two touchdowns including a 41-yard run on a fake punt against Houston on Sept. 28. He rushed for his second touchdown Dec. 18 against Indianapolis. He also returned a fumble 18 yards for a touchdown on Nov. 2 at Cincinnati. His 18 points scored last season tied for third on the team, and his 18 tackles on special teams ranked second.
Owens played in 38 games while at Maine and majored in kinesiology. He joined Richard Collier and Tony McDaniel as the only three undrafted rookies to make the 2006 opening day roster and was one of only 10 undrafted rookies in team history to play on opening day.
