Vic's live blog

The Jaguars entertained fans with an in-stadium scrimmage Friday night, and the Senior Editor kept the fans updated with his live blog. Here's what he wrote.

8/3/2007 6:32:22 PM
Hi, everybody. Are you ready for some football? I&39;m in the press box gettin&39; ready to do some bloggin&39;. Yeah, football is back. Fans are filing in to Jacksonville Municipal Stadium for tonight&39;s scrimmage, and why not? Admission is free, parking is free and beer is discounted in the Bud Zone. It&39;s happy hour with a scrimmage going on.

8/3/2007 6:48:28 PM
Here&39;s the scoring system for tonight&39;s scrimmage: The offense scores six points for a touchdown, one for a PAT, three for a field goal, two for consecutive first downs and one point for a run of 12 yards or more or a pass of 20 yards or longer. The defense scores three for an interception or fumble recovery, two for a three-and-out and one point for a sack or tackle for loss.

8/3/2007 6:56:23 PM
I&39;ll give you the score from time to time -- it&39;s offense vs. defense -- but the score is secondary to the importance of tonight&39;s event. This scrimmage is an evaluation tool and I&39;m going to tell you what I see and how it relates to the big picture. By the way, the Jaguars have announced that quarterback Quinn Gray is off the PUP list and is on the active roster.

8/3/2007 7:14:02 PM
This is going to be a real good crowd, and it should be. The weather even appears as though it may cooperate. This is a good event for a family Friday evening in Jacksonville, and the prices are certainly right.

8/3/2007 7:22:37 PM
The Jaguars are doing calisthenics, which isn&39;t a big deal except Mike Peterson has developed a little Joey Porter-type routine. Peterson has been pure energy in this training camp and the players respond to him.

8/3/2007 7:27:07 PM
Quinn Gray, Charles Sharon, Jeremy Mincey and Paul Spicer will not play tonight. Sharon is out with a concussion, Mincey has a calf injury and Spicer has a bad back.

8/3/2007 7:32:21 PM
Here we go.

8/3/2007 7:33:35 PM
The ball is at the 30-yard line; first offense vs. second defense. Leftwich throws deep to Dennis Northcutt for 33 yards.

8/3/2007 7:36:02 PM
Fred Taylor gains nine yards. Leftwich throws complete to Wilford for 10 yards and a first down at the 18. Taylor runs to the 13. Jones-Drew to the five. I&39;ve just been informed that the first two series will be touch only.

8/3/2007 7:38:23 PM
Leftwich throws incomplete and out of the end zone. On second down Leftwich is sacked by Brent Hawkins. On third down Leftwich throws to Marcedes Lewis at the four-yard line. Scobee kicks a 22-yard field goal.

8/3/2007 7:39:36 PM
On that drive, Leftwich was three of four for 49 yards. The offensive line pretty much had it way; there were holes for the running game. Leftwich&39;s long pass to Northcutt may have been underthrown. I can&39;t know for sure; it&39;s possible it was designed that way.

8/3/2007 7:41:37 PM
Garrard is at quarterback; drive begins at 30. Garrard throws to Jermaine Wiggins for five. On third down, Garrard throws behind LaBrandon Toefield, incomplete. That&39;s a three-and-out for the defense. That was the number one defense vs. the number two offense.

8/3/2007 7:45:00 PM
Ones vs. ones; ball is at the short 30. Garrard throws to Wilford for seven to the 23. Taylor runs around left end for a first down at the 17. The whole left side was caved in. Brian Williams is guilty of pass interference; ball at 12. Jones-Drew gains three yards but a holding penalty moves the ball back to the 23.

8/3/2007 7:46:17 PM
Leftwich to Matt Jones over the middle for 23 yards and a touchdown. The offense has a 16-3 lead.

8/3/2007 7:46:57 PM
Leftwich&39;s throw to Jones was perfectly placed. He put it right on Jones&39; hands. There will be one more touch series, then it&39;ll go to tackle.

8/3/2007 7:49:18 PM
Tim Couch is at quarterback; the ball is at the long 30. He throws to Alvin Pearman for two yards. Pearman is stopped on third down. That&39;s a three-and-out for the defense.

8/3/2007 7:50:24 PM
They went for it on fourth down and Couch threw incomplete. I didn&39;t know they were allowed to go for it on fourth down.

8/3/2007 7:51:47 PM
Substitutions have begun. It&39;s live now and Leftwich threw a dart to Lewis for 20 yards to the 50.

8/3/2007 7:53:31 PM
Leftwich to Derrick Wimbush in the flat; play goes for 21 to the 29. Leftwich and the Jaguars passing game is off to a fast start. Toefield just ran over Justin Durant; Toefield is a load. Leftwich to Reggie Williams for a first down at the 17.

8/3/2007 7:57:22 PM
Leftwich shovels to Toefield to the 10. Leftwich is now nine of 10 for 137 yards. Tony McDaniel flattens Pearman at the nine. Pearman to the four. Toefield plows to the one. He has amazing power. He should not be overlooked. Toefield scores.

8/3/2007 7:58:03 PM
The offense, particularly Leftwich and the number one offense, is carrying the night. This is a very impressive start for new offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter&39;s bunch. The fans will like this a lot.

8/3/2007 7:59:48 PM
Time for special teams now. Rookie Adam Podlesh is up to bat.

8/3/2007 8:06:25 PM
The punting exhibition has concluded. Podlesh and Tony Yelk each struggled, though Yelk got off one bomb. Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis won&39;t be satisfied with what he just saw.

8/3/2007 8:06:54 PM
This evening&39;s attendance is 11,039. That&39;s nearly 4,000 better than last year.

8/3/2007 8:08:41 PM
Leftwich to Pearman. Leftwich is on fire. He&39;s making all of the throws and he&39;s very accurate.

8/3/2007 8:12:10 PM
Leftwich to Matt Jones in the flat. There&39;s an incompletion for Mike Walker. Leftwich to Greg Estandia. Estandia is a real horse over the middle. Sack. Estandia catches better than he pass-blocks.

8/3/2007 8:13:53 PM
Reggie Nelson knocks away a jump ball for Matt Jones in the end zone. It&39;s 27-5 in favor of the offense.

8/3/2007 8:14:36 PM
The crowd is going wild. They&39;re chanting, Byron, Byron, Byron.

8/3/2007 8:16:00 PM
Just kidding, folks.

8/3/2007 8:23:36 PM
We&39;re back. Toefield just pounded out a first down. I&39;m telling you, he is really impressive.

8/3/2007 8:24:41 PM
Garrard to Broussard. It has a nice ring to it.

8/3/2007 8:25:26 PM
Garrard to Broussard again, this time for 32 yards. Nice throw on the run by Garrard.

8/3/2007 8:28:17 PM
Great throw by Garrard over the middle to Pearman for a first down. This drive began at the long four. It&39;s now on the short 27. Garrard has been very sharp on this possession.

8/3/2007 8:28:59 PM
Garrard to Wimbush in the flat to the nine. Great throw; right on Wimbush&39;s hip.

8/3/2007 8:30:53 PM
Garrard threw for Jones in the end zone. The ball should&39;ve been caught.

8/3/2007 8:31:34 PM
Scobee kicks a 26-yard field goal.

8/3/2007 8:37:54 PM
Lester Ricard and the third-team offense is on the field. Three and out. They&39;re going to do it again. Another three-and-out. They&39;re going to do it again. This should be the final series of the evening.

8/3/2007 8:42:03 PM
Garrard is at quarterback again. He throws to Pearman. Garrard to Broussard for 19 yards. Nice catch; nice throw. Broussard has real quicks and nice body control. He&39;s catching everything, too. He&39;s a keeper.

8/3/2007 8:44:29 PM
Garrard to tight end Isaac Smolko to the one-yard line. Garrard really looks sharp now. Both quarterbacks had good nights. This is good stuff. They&39;re competing. That&39;s exactly what you want.

8/3/2007 8:45:07 PM
Garrard to Smolko for a touchdown. That should do it. Thanks for being with me tonight. I&39;ll follow with a roundup story on jaguars.com.
