Camp Wrap, Day 14: Hunter "Back to Trav…"

wrap14

JACKSONVILLETravis Hunter wears many hats for the Jaguars.

He mostly wore one Monday.

Hunter spent most of his practice reps at cornerback on Monday, an intentional move by the Jaguars' staff as they continue to prepare him for Week 1 and beyond. As he often does, Hunter – the No. 2 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft – quickly made an impact.

"Now, I'm back," Hunter said.

The Jaguars practiced for nearly two hours at the Miller Electric Center on Day 14 of 2026 Training Camp on Monday, with Hunter playing mostly defense. He took wide receiver reps during 7-on-7 drills but worked exclusively at corner during team drills – making plays in the process.

"We just wanted to get him the 7-on-7 work and just really hone in on a little bit more corner," Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen said.

Hunter called the approach "definitely beneficial."

"I needed to knock the rust off," he said. "I've got to get better somehow, somewhere. I definitely took my time to hone in on one today and that was defense. Get better, get my feet up under me. Can't let anybody catch the ball, so that's my motto right now, just continue to focus and get better."

Hunter on Monday matched up several times against the Jaguars' top receivers, such as Brian Thomas Jr. and Jakobi Meyers. He made a play on the ball toward the end of practice, recording a physical and athletic pass breakup against rookie wide receiver CJ Williams.

"Made a good play on the out cut over there," Coen said.

Hunter during past '26 camp practices typically worked on both sides of the ball, with Coen calling Monday a chance for the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner to see the game from mostly one side.

"Trying to get him more just when he's on defense and then getting some of the mental reps on defense," Coen said. "When he's not in and he's coming to offense every time, we're losing out on even more coaching in those moments.

"We wanted to just be very intentional today about getting him some of those visual reps so [defensive pass-game coordinator Mathieu Araujo] can coach him even when he's not in, he's not running over. We just wanted to get him a little bit more of that."

Hunter has made an impact at cornerback throughout training camp, making several highlight plays as he continues acclimating to both sides of the ball after missing the last 10 regular-season games last season with a knee injury.

"It just felt great," Hunter said. "Being back to Trav, knocked the rust off the first couple of weeks. I'm just ready to go and continue to play and get better."

NOTABLE

  • Coen praised rookie guard Emmanuel Pregnon's performance in a Preseason Week 1 victory over the New Orleans Saints Saturday, saying the third-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, "Did some really nice things." Pregnon then worked at times with the starting unit in team drills Monday. "He moved people in one-on-one situations, de-cleated a guy on a pull," Coen said of his performance Saturday. "He flashed. That was for sure. He flashed in the joint [practices against the Saints last Thursday] as well when he got some opportunities with the ones, and he's just continuing. It's a process. It's not something that we're obviously trying to push. It's just, 'Hey, when the time comes, he'll be ready.' He's trying to work through that and the continuity with the group. Just for what he was able to do and the ops that he had, we were pleased with him." Pregnon on Monday said Saturday increased his confidence, "I believe I did some good things out there, as far as doing my job. I don't like to make it about me. I knew I did my job when I needed to and we won the game. That was the biggest thing for me, is winning and doing whatever the coaches ask me to do to the best of my ability – and that being exceptional."

NOTABLE

  • Backup quarterback Nick Mullens did not participate in practice Monday, with Coen saying "he got kind of dinged" against the Saints. Coen said Mullens may be held out Preseason Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers Friday. "More precautionary, just trying to let it slow down, let it chill out, and give these other guys some reps, too," Coen said. "We have to get [reserve quarterbacks] Carter [Bradley] and Joey [Aguilar] some more reps, and when Nick's able to go, we'll get him back out there."
