Jaguars Thursday: "Eliminating Big Plays…"

THURS NEWS

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars practiced at the Miller Electric Center Thursday.

The AFC South-leading Jaguars (4-2) will play their first home game since September 27 when they play host to the Indianapolis Colts (2-5) at EverBank Stadium Sunday, with offensive coordinator Grant Udinski and defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile speaking to the media before practice Thursday.

A look at Thursday around the Jaguars:

1.Among the Jaguars' focuses moving forward: Reducing explosive plays.

Campanile said that's a priority following a Week 7 bye, with the Jaguars – like most NFL teams – using their annual bye week to self-scout their operation.

"When we're eliminating big plays, we're playing good defense," Campanile said. "And when we're not, we're struggling and not playing the type of defense that we want to play. That's Captain Obvious, I get it.

"If you're eliminating big plays and you're making people drive the length of the field, you're going to be playing good defense, you're going to have more opportunities for takeaways, you're going to have more opportunity for stops."

The Jaguars have been one of the NFL's best defenses in the red zone and at taking the ball away, but in a 34-31 loss to the Houston Texans in Week 6, they allowed three "explosive pass" plays on three separate drives that ended in 17 Texans points.

"Just figure out what we got to do and just continue to just go out there and play and don't let the ball go over our head," Jaguars wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter said Thursday.

Campanile called the bye-week self-study period "really good" and "really productive," adding that some of the process was about watching other teams.

"You get into all that," he said, adding, "There are some things that we looked at in order to help ourselves there, where we can be better, where I can be better even in terms of what we're playing in some of the situations. No defense can overcome giving up chunk plays."

2.Hunter, the No. 2 overall selection by the Jaguars in the 2025 NFL Draft, turned in one of his best career offensive performances against the Texans. Udinski said that won't necessarily mean a dramatic and steady increase in his offensive snaps.

"That's something that will probably vary week-to-week," Udinski said. "We know that skillset will continue to develop and evolve, and we're going to continue to build off of that."

Hunter, as he has done most of the season, played extensively as a starter at cornerback against the Texans and registered his second interception of the season. He played nine plays offensively, catching a season-high four passes for a season-high 59 yards and a touchdown.

Hunter has played 311 snaps at cornerback this season compared and 30 snaps at wide receiver.

"I really don't focus on that," Hunter said. "Whenever coaches call my number and go out there and play, I'm ready to go out there and just achieve and do what I have to do to help the team."

Hunter this season has recorded two interceptions defensively, with six receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown offensively.

"Some weeks, it might be a strong feature of Travis and you may say, 'Man, this guy suddenly had 10 catches one game and then the next game it might only be two or three catches or a couple touches,'" Udinski said. "We know that he has that ability at all times.

"We're going to continue to try to build his route tree, build the things he can do in the run game, the screen game, the pass game. Shoot, you see him blocking out there. I think he's impressive from a blocker standpoint, whether it's in the pass game or screen game or in the run game."

3.The Jaguars on Thursday issued their second of three injury reports for the week, with safety Antonio Johnson missing practice for a second consecutive day with ankle injury. Johnson sustained the injury against the Texans.

Cornerback Montaric Brown, who missed two of three games before the bye with a hamstring injury, practiced full a second consecutive day. Tight end Brenton Strange practiced full for a second consecutive day with an eye issue.

Running back LeQuint Allen Jr. practiced limited with a hamstring issue, with four players practicing limited for a second consecutive day: Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers (hamstring), nose tackle Ruke Orhorhoro (ankle), linebacker Jahlani Tavai (hamstring) and long snapper Ross Matiscik (shoulder). Matiscik missed the Texans game.
