Student athletes from around the First Coast put pen to paper on February 1 as they signed national letters of intent to play football at the collegiate level. Later that day, the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation took time to celebrate the achievements of these local high school football players and offer some words of wisdom as they continue their journey at the next level.

The National Signing Day event welcomed 15 students to EverBank Field.  After welcome remarks from Assistant Superintendent from Duval County Public Schools Larry Roziers, each player was given the opportunity to stand up front and announce his respective college in front of his peers and family in the Jaguars Team Meeting Room.

Student athletes also heard from several guest speakers, including a Jaguars alumnus, Scouting Associate Greg Jones, and Strength and Conditioning Coach Cedric Scott.  Both offered advice on how to prepare for this next chapter and the new challenges and opportunities that will come with the transition.

"The transition from high school into college can be an eye opening experience. You go from being the best on your high school team to having to compete for a spot on your college team," said Jones. "The best thing you can do is surround yourself with positive and like-minded people who have your best interest in mind to help you get to the next level."

Jaguars Wide Receiver Tony Washington, an Appalachian State University alumnus, walked the students through his own journey from high school football through college and into the pros. He specifically focused on was the importance of education and life after football.

"You have to be a student first and an athlete second," said Washington. "Life doesn't always go as planned and having a backup plan is critical.  Although student athletes have to do double the work, it's that effort that builds discipline, strength and sets you apart."

Student athletes and parents both had the opportunity to ask questions of the guest speakers.  Following the event, the players gathered for a group photo and meal in the Team Dining Hall.
