Khan: "You Love Stuff Coming Together…"

KHAN

LONDON, United Kingdom – There's much to like about the Jaguars these days.

The Jaguars are well above .500, and that's not the only thing that's positive.

"I feel great, obviously," Khan said.

The Jaguars, after winning the AFC South – the third division title in Khan's tenure as owner – with a 13-4 record last regular season, enter Sunday's game 4-1 with a two-game lead in the division through five weeks.

That's part of a good feeling around the organization that also includes ongoing renovation for the Stadium of the Future in downtown Jacksonville, this year's recent opening of the Jaguars' business operations – One Tower Court – across from EverBank Stadium and the pending opening of the Four Seasons Hotel adjacent to One Tower Court.

"You love stuff coming together as a football team, but I also love what's happening in the city – which is the development, the promise of Jacksonville, all happening at the same time," Khan said.

Khan also addressed the development of Liam Coen as head coach and James Gladstone as general manager in their second seasons with the organization.

"I've been there 14 years [as owner] and I think we've matured as a team, as an organization," Khan said. "Even though they've been now in their second season, it hasn't been an overnight thing. Whether it's the Miller Electric Center, [quarterback] Trevor [Lawrence], the players … that has happened over time.

"We're blessed to have Liam, James and [Executive Vice President of Football Operations] Tony [Boselli] to put it all together."

Khan called the ongoing Stadium-of-the-Future progress "really, really cool."

"That whole area is going to be amazing," Khan said, adding of the team's state-of-the-art Stadium of the Future Sales Center, "Everything is cutting edge. We are looking for how do we convey or imagine the experience the best way possible. It's a commitment and we want people to support us, so we have to present it in the best way."

Khan also addressed Trevor Lawrence's development since Coen's arrival as head coach, calling it "awesome" and saying, "I've always believed in him from the first time I met him on Zoom."

"He's the right guy for us," Khan said. "I tell people all the time, 'He's a great football player, but he's an even better human being, frankly.'"

Khan on Sunday also addressed:

  • The team's approach to playing in London moving forward: "We do want to look at that. We've played 16 games here. We have a bunch of fans here. It has been great, really, for Jacksonville and the Jaguars. I think next year we're going to play definitely one game, then after that we're going to see what works really for the league and what works for us and reexamine."
  • Jaguars President Mark Lamping saying Saturday, "If there's a natural year where you probably want to play every home game in Jacksonville, it would be the year you open a new stadium." That would mean playing all home games at the Stadium of the Future in 2028. Khan: "The league has been very supportive of the Jaguars. There were a lot of reasons when we started doing it 13 years ago. I think we want to balance everything out, but to me, that's our goal."
  • The idea of the Jaguars playing three home games internationally next season, when they are scheduled to play all domestic home games in Orlando while Jacksonville stadium renovations continue: "We have to talk to the league. Personally, I think three games [in London] are too many. But they [the NFL] have the big strategy on where the games ought to be and the league decides where we're going to play and who our opponent is going to be."
  • On last Sunday's game at Tottenham Stadium, a 19-17 Jaguars victory in which Philadelphia Eagles fans outnumbered Jaguars fans significantly: "This is the first year that has happened. The league changed the rules here this year where the home team cannot name the opponent. This was a league rule. Once you are the home team, the league picks the opponent. Before that, that wasn't the case."
  • On the London initiative that began in 2013: "I think it has worked really well. It has really put Jacksonville on the global map. We've had cross-business transactions. I think it has been great for the city of Jacksonville. Having an infomercial putting London and Jacksonville in the same sentence is good."
