Scout's Take: Bucky Brooks Breaks Down Jaguars' 19-17 Victory Over Eagles

SCOUTS TAKE

WATFORD, United Kingdom – In a weekly feature for the 2026 season, NFL Media and Jaguars Media Analyst Bucky Brooks breaks down the Jaguars' performance in a 19-17 Week 5 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, United Kingdom, Sunday

BIG IMPRESSION

Great teams find ways to win when they don't bring their "A" game, and the Jaguars' victory over the Eagles suggests the reigning AFC South champions are ready to make an extended playoff run this season. Fueled by quarterback Trevor Lawrence's efficient performance and timely playmaking from wide receiver Parker Washington and tight end Brenton Strange, the Jaguars' offense made enough plays to complement a stingy defense that continues to force opponents into a one-dimensional approach by eliminating the running game. With the special teams  coming up big, particularly in the kick return game, the Jaguars' ability to execute a complementary plan helped them chalk up their fourth victory of the season.

KEYS TO VICTORY

Kicker Cam Little's game-winning 57-yard field goal capped one of the most resilient performances in Jaguars history. Despite numerous self-inflicted mistakes, including 13 penalties, missed assignments and blown coverages, the Jaguars found a way to beat a perennial contender in front of a pro-Philadelphia crowd that turned a "home" game into a hostile environment. The Jaguars scratched and clawed their way to victory, leaning on their stars to win. Lawrence, Washington and Strange sparked the offense. At the same time, ends Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker, linebacker Foyesade Oluokun and safety Antonio Johnson defensively collectively made enough contributions to tilt the game in the Jaguars' favor. With Little's last-play field goal clinching the victory, the Jaguars' blue-chip players made enough splash plays to win.

TREVOR'S TIME

The former No. 1 overall selection continues to impress as a franchise quarterback, leaping from good to great in his sixth season. Lawrence's efficient play delicately balances superb game management with timely playmaking from the pocket. Most importantly, he is finding various ways to punish opponents for their defensive tactics by leaning into his superior arm talent and athleticism to make big plays on scripted or impromptu plays. The 6-feet-6, 220-pounder boldly throws the ball into tight windows and takes off whenever he must make a "gotta-have-it" play to keep the offense on the field. With his fourth-and-forever throw to Washington showcasing his range and touch as a deep-ball passer, the Jaguars' QB1 is inching closer to top-five status as among the premier players at the position.

UNSUNG HERO

The special teams deserve a game ball for the contributions of Little, punter Logan Cooke, nose tackle/long snapper DaVon Hamilton, running back/returner Ameer Abdullah and others in a nip-and-tuck affair decided in the waning moments. While Little and Abdullah have received plenty of attention for their clutch plays, the impromptu snapper-holder combination of Hamilton and Cooke might have been more critical to the outcome. The Pro Bowl-caliber defensive tackle rarely practices long snapping, so his ability to deliver clean snaps is remarkable given his limited reps. With Cooke bailing him out a few times with acrobatic snatches and holds, the Jaguars' patchwork snapping operation was good enough to win.

OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING

The Jaguars didn't put up impressive numbers, but the workmanlike effort showed the unit's ability to shift seamlessly from a high-powered offense to an efficient, ball-control machine. The running game, anchored by running back Bhayshul Tuten, provided enough balance for Lawrence to pepper the Eagles' defense with "dink-and-dunk" throws at short and intermediate range. Although the offensive line struggled at times against the Eagles' massive defensive tackles, subtle schematic adjustments and a shift to a grittier approach helped the Jaguars earn a hard-fought win against a perennial contender.

DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING

The defense continues to stand tall in key moments. The impenetrable run defense sets the table for an opportunistic linebacker corps and defensive backfield to make plays on the ball in obvious passing situations. Despite early struggles on third-and-long, the Jaguars eventually settled on a blitz-heavy strategy that got the unit off the field. With the talent, toughness and tactics aligning in the second half, the Jaguars made enough plays to thwart Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts' efforts and scratch out a gritty win.
