Thursday Quick Hits: "An Incredibly Rare Luxury…"

QH

WATFORD, United Kingdom – The Jaguars practiced at The Grove on Thursday.

A look at Thursday around the Jaguars:

1.Walker Little  will make his first start of the season at left tackle for the Jaguars on Sunday. That it's far, far from his first NFL start ever is something Udinski considers important.

Little, a second-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, will start in place of left tackle Anton Harrison Sunday. Little replaced Harrison after the latter sustained a knee injury in a 19-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday.

"I probably can't overstate how important it is because we really are fortunate to not have to play a backup in a situation when a tackle goes down," Udinski said. "I don't look at Walker as a backup tackle or a backup guard."

Little has started 39 games for the Jaguars, including 31 at left tackle.

"We have seven, eight starter-caliber offensive linemen, and I know that's an incredibly rare luxury to have that type of depth at the offensive line," Udinski said. "It totally changes the way you gameplan, it changes the way you attack the run game, it changes the way you attack pass protection.

"To have that luxury is really unimaginable in many other places in the NFL. Having a guy who can go in there and play in the middle of a game or in the middle of a series and go out there and play like a starting tackle is a huge luxury."

2.Defensive end Josh Hines-Allen has significant impact on the Jaguars' No. 2-ranked defense in myriad ways, with Campanile on Thursday saying the eighth-year veteran "affects the game considerably in every game that we're in."

Hines-Allen, an eight-year veteran, has 1.5 sacks this season with a team-high seven pressures, 19 tackles, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and a pass defense.

"Even in terms of getting hits on the quarterback, he's affecting the game in the pass rush," Campanile said, noting that Hines-Allen in addition to edge rushing as a defensive end also "plays a lot of outside linebacker roles" in the 3-4 elements of the defense.

"He's not just a put-his-hand-in-the-ground rush guy," Campanile said. "He does a ton of jobs for us. If you watch the games, there are plenty of games or plays in the game where he may be dropping out and rerouting the hell out of a route concept and the ball doesn't go there.

"In the pass rush, he has been effective in getting hits and hurries on the quarterback. Obviously, the goal for everybody and for all our guys in the rush is to get the quarterback on the ground. There is some stuff I can do better in terms of generating those numbers, but I think he (Hines-Allen) has been really good for us."

3.Campanile on Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, who has six touchdowns with no interceptions in five games this season: "He's really decisive back there, and he's doing a great job getting the ball out quickly. He's done a good job with their RPO game. He really has a good command of their offense. You do something long enough and you're in a system for more than one year, there's probably a comfortability. Their entire offense shows that and they've had success early in the season offensively because of that."

4.The Jaguars on Thursday released the second of two injury reports for the week, with safety Eric Murray practicing limited for a second consecutive day after missing Sunday's victory over the Eagles with a concussion.

Cornerback Montaric Brown missed a second consecutive practice with a hamstring injury Thursday. He played against the Eagles after missing a victory over the Cincinnati Bengals the previous week with a hamstring injury.

Long snapper Ross Matiscik also missed practice a second consecutive day Thursday. He left Sunday's victory over the Eagles with a shoulder injury, with the Jaguars on Tuesday signing veteran long snapper Jacob Bobenmoyer to the practice squad.

The following players practiced limited for the Jaguars for a second consecutive day Thursday: Tight end Nate Boerkircher (back), right tackle Cole Van Lanen (knee), rookie guard Emmanuel Pregnon (toe), cornerback Jarrian Jones (elbow), cornerback Jourdan Lewis (hamstring) and cornerback Jaylon Jones (hamstring).
