O-Zone: Big one

JACKSONVILLE – Look-ahead Wednesday.

On to the future – and specifically, on to the Houston Texans at EverBank Stadium this Sunday.

Let's get to it …

John from Minneapolis, MN

I think we'll be fine if we reduce our self-inflicted wounds, to be honest. Compared to last year, we look better on both sides of the ball. Am I completely in the wrong here?

I have written and said multiple times since Sunday's 31-27 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals that I am more optimistic about the Jaguars now than before this season began. If they remain healthy, it appears this offense can run consistently and get receivers in position to make plays consistently. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, while far from perfect, appears from this view to be developing in his first season in Head Coach Liam Coen's offensive system. The defense is creating turnovers and getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks. I said on Jaguars A.M. Monday that if the Jaguars continue running and forcing turnovers as well all season as they have in the first two games, they can be a playoff team. I'll stick with that statement until proven wrong.

Leonard from JACKSONVILLE

Is there such a thing as a "CURSE" in the NFL? Been a close fan and following Jags since inception. It seems to me that after Tom Coughlin was fired the Jags have lost many, many games that they should have won. As a result of having the game handed to them on a silver platter, they manage to find a way to lose. These losing ways are almost impossible.

Teams lose games they should win in professional football. It's a sport of close games and big plays at key times. There is no such thing as a curse in the NFL.

The fact that 1) Lawrence looks much more comfortable and in command at the line of scrimmage than he ever has previously in his pro career; 2) the offensive line has been very good to excellent in these first two games and 3) being in position to win a game in the fourth quarter that most observers thought they would have little chance of winning, makes me hopeful for the rest of the season.

Yep.

Bob from Coosawatchie SC

What General Manager James Gladstone and Coen have done in a few months is impressive. This team slogged through a 4-13 season and now looks like they can play with anyone. I expect they will keep improving and be relevant later in the season. Bhayshul Tuten - wow.

Yep.

Rob from The Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Is it possible that Foye Oluokun is the best linebacker in Jaguars history? A case is beginning to be made. One fer Foye!

Anything's possible, I suppose – and Oluokun is starting to belong in the conversation. But considering that conversation also includes Daryl Smith, Paul Posluszny and Mike Peterson it's going to be a long and heated conversation.

Keith from Space Coast

Just for spits and giggles, do the Jaguars beat Cincinnati if they had Mike Sims-Walker, Mike Thomas and Jason Hill at wide receiver?

Probably not. They're past their primes and haven't played professional football in a long time.

Jerell from Columbia SC

Put Hunter on one side of the ball and call it a day. He is currently a nonfactor on both sides of the ball as of now. A waste of two picks. Don't get me started on Trevor Lawrence.

Jaguars rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter is trying to play both positions extensively, which would mean being the first player to do this in the NFL in at least about three decades. Part of the deal when you are doing something no one has done in so long is many people believe what you are going can't be done – and many people will inevitably share "thoughts" reflecting that disbelief. Hunter is going to continue to play both cornerback and receiver. He's already very good at corner. He's natural there. He's not as polished at receiver, but he has quickness and athleticism that is special. I expect the Jaguars will adjust his playing time on each side of the ball as situations merit. They do not remotely believe he is a non-factor or a waste of picks. Jerell, it would appear, is back. To all our relief.

Mike from Kingsport, TN

I see Trevor leading an innovative offense and going through his reads, all without a play sheet on his wrist. I see huge improvement in his game. People forget it took Baker Mayfield four or five games to really get this offense going last year for the Bucs.

Lawrence indeed is showing growth in Coen's offense. The Jaguars remain pleased with his growth and approach. He is not the best quarterback in the NFL. He still makes a few mistakes a game that are head-scratching. I don't know where Lawrence's "ceiling" is, but he can play winning football and the Jaguars can win if he continues this growth.

Big on Blake from Philly

It's been a long time, Zone. Too long. I've been away so long that now it's Devin Lloyd who wasn't down. But seriously, I see a lot of good things from this team. They dropped too many passes and got a couple of bad timing bad calls against them. I don't think this team is cursed and I actually think they will start winning a lot more than they lose really soon. Strong run game, strong defense and an offense over 200 yards the first 2 first halves of the year. Go Jags! No question, just want to say I think they're finally turning the corner.

This team feels different this season. There are foundation pieces that feel like they can be built upon for short- and long-term success. I understand that some people look and see a team that beat a winless team and lost to a team with a backup quarterback. I see a team that can compete against most teams and give itself a chance at the end of this season. Stay tuned.

Moshe from México City

Will the Jaguars file a complaint with the league? They didn't lose the game because of Lawrence's interceptions or the receivers' drops. They lost because the league has bad officials or corrupt officials who didn't let Devin Lloyd score and called interference on what could have been the play of the week by Hunter. By the way, I loved the expression Hunter made with his hands when he saw the penalty marker on the field.

The Jaguars will send multiple plays from Week 2 to the league for review, as most NFL teams do every week. The league will review these plays and tell the Jaguars some of the plays were officiated correctly. They also likely will tell them some of the plays were officiated incorrectly. It is typically very unsatisfying to hear the latter.

Bill from Hammock, FL

Zone, I realize Cincy has two of the best receivers in the league but the coverage was ridiculous. It was difficult to believe the hype about Campbell and pretty much proven

I'm not being facetious or mean-spirited here, but when was there a lot of hype about Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell? There has been mention of him being a good player. I just don't recall that much "hype."

Bill from Hammock, FL

Zone, Why not use Hunter exclusively on defense right now? Parker Washington is a very capable backup, but there is none on defense.

I expect there may be a time in the foreseeable future when Hunter plays a bit more on defense and a bit less on offense at times.

Cliff from Everywhere with helicopter

What I'd really like to see Sunday against Houston is a nice "student body left/right" to whichever side Texans LB Azeez Al-Shaair happens to be on. Just once.

I don't expect a particular play run at Al-Shaair in this fashion Sunday. I do expect the Jaguars, if pushed, to push back.

John from Jax

Hi, KOAGF. When a quarterback is about to be hit/sacked from behind, often due to a failed/missed block, does a player alert the quarterback with some type of word that is shouted to help the quarterback secure the ball and prepare for the hit?

Different plays have different words they use in this situation. It is usually some version of, "Look out." There are often apologies involved after these words. Their words are also typically unsatisfying to hear.

Justin from Decatur, GA

Everyone is focusing on what went wrong. Can we get Parker Washington on the field more? Wow, he looked good.

Jaguars third-year wide receiver Parker Washington had five receptions for 75 yards Sunday. He was impressive throughout the offseason and training camp. He continues to be impressive. He absolutely is earning more snaps.

Al from Orange Park, FL

I know it's early in the season, but looking at the current standings, next week's game is looking huge.

As division games tend to look.
