O-Zone: Date with destiny

JACKSONVILLE – Look-ahead Wednesday.

Let's get to it …

DJ from Jacksonville

Although the Jags nearly give me a heart attack almost every week, they are winning the close games that they would normally lose in seasons past. I like the way this new regime is improving the roster and I love the wins that we're piling up.

This is perhaps the healthiest way to see the 2025 Jaguars, weekly near-heart attack notwithstanding. The Jaguars entering Sunday's Week 13 game against the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., are 7-4. They are exciting. And they are very much in the AFC playoff picture. They are also a game behind the Indianapolis Colts (8-3) in the AFC South and most of these positives stem from their ability to win close games – an area in which they indeed have struggled mightily at times in past seasons. But the reason for those past close-game struggles was that many of those Jaguars teams weren't good whereas this Jaguars team is not only good but continuously improving. It's also worth noting that this team also is still playing through injuries, with key players such as defensive end Travon Walker, wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., safety Eric Murray and cornerback Jourdan Lewis potentially returning in the coming weeks. The Jaguars spent November playing through issues, continuing to find themselves and scratching their way into contention. They're now in position with a very good awareness of how they must play to win. The last six weeks could be interesting and entertaining. Here we go.

Beavis from the SouthSide

A very wise man once wrote that good teams win close games. Does this mean we're good?

The Jaguars are 7-4 and seeded No. 6 in the AFC. They have five victories over teams .500 or better – the Carolina Panthers, Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans and Los Angeles Chargers. I understand the Jaguars have been bad a lot, so it makes sense that fans can't quite tell when they're good. I'll help: They're good.

The NFL is the Southeastern Conference, Johnny O. Close games (in conference), but you just can't lose more than a couple.

Please stop.

Adam from Round Here

Let's go, Johnny. Time to run the Division, right?

The Jaguars have a very real chance to win the AFC South. They are a game behind the Colts and a game ahead of the Texans, and there's no reason to think either team has a better opportunity to win this thing than the Jaguars. First task: Win Sunday against the Titans. That's the one that matters right now.

Chad from Saint Johns, FL

What is Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker's status this week?

Stay tuned.

Robert from Elkton

John, I think the Jags have $8 million in salary cap space left. I've read wide receiver Jakobi Meyers could get as much as $20 million in free agency next year. Have you seen enough (including his career before Jags) to sign him next week to a contract for $15 million per year in 2026 and 2027, and renegotiate his 2025 contract to include everything they have left in the cap paid out this year as a signing bonus? And do you think that might be enough to get him to sign? From the team's view, I guess they can roll cap space; but from the player's view, I would think the cash today would make it very enticing.

I don't expect the Jaguars to sign Meyers to an extension before the end of the season. I expect they will try to do so shortly after the season if he continues to play at his current level – and if he continues to fit with the team as he has fit in the last two weeks.

Brian from Round Rock, TX

Maybe Travon Walker is the only defensive player that should have kept the weight on. How serious is his injury?

I don't know what the first sentence in this email means. I do know Walker was playing at a high level – and the highest level of his career – before he sustained a wrist injury in Week 4 victory over the 49ers. I know he has been good, though quite understandably not as good, since sustaining that injury while playing essentially one-handed. My understanding is his current knee injury is not long-term.

Dean from Rochester, NY

"[Jaguars Head Coach Liam] Coen's logic was that the reward of ending the game by gaining one yard was worth the risk of being stopped." Maybe if you run or sneak. Not a pass. Too much to go wrong.

The year is 2025.

Nic from Raleigh, NC

Not sure if anyone has said it yet, but it needs to be said: One fer Parker Washington! You can't measure momentum changes, but if you could, he might just lead the league. One could argue that he's been a Top 5 player on this team even if his stats don't show it. He has been our healthiest, most consistent receiver.

Wide receiver Parker Washington absolutely has been one of the Jaguars' Top 5 players this season. The only question would be where he ranks within that group.

Anita from Springfield

What's our W/L ratio when running back Travis Etienne Jr. tops 100 scrimmage-yards?

Four and zero.

Cliff from Everywhere with helicopter

Indy comes to town in two weeks. What's Coach Coen's approach to the proverbial "trap game" in Nashville this Sunday?

To emphasize the truth to players the truth – that Sunday's game against the Titans is the most important game of the season.

Brandon from Louisville, KY

Saying the Jags are 7-4 sounds like Trevor is helping them. He has been terrible with costly interceptions in the red zone, throws past the line of scrimmage and bad clock management all year – alongside of inaccurate throws. He's not close to the reason they are 7-4.

Touchdown passes count. So do touchdown runs. So do victories. Lawrence absolutely is a big reason this team is 7-4.

Johnny B from Howey In The Hills

Dr. O: I was browsing the Arizona game pictures and noticed Foye Olukuon had a "1,000" on a sign in the locker room after the game. Did he hit a 1,000-tackle milestone? What a great guy and one of the best free agent signings ever by the Jags. If he did hit some milestone, I wish it would have been publicized. Let us know. Go Jags, 8-4 here we come.

Jaguars linebacker Foye Oluokun indeed reached the 1,000-tackle mark this past Sunday, registering 10 tackles to reach 1,009 for his career. He is one of 6 active players to reach that milestone. He has been really good player for this team for the past four seasons. One fer Oluokun.

Reese from Camden, NJ

Is it time to draft a quarterback in this year's draft that can push Trevor to play better?

No.

Marky from Middleburg

Hey, O. I'm really feeling for Liam these days. He paid Trevor like a superstar and now he has to lay in his bed that he made. He probably goes home at night, looks in the mirror, splashes cold water on his face and say why did I do that??? Well, the chickens come to roost and now we're stuck with a contract worse than the Browns.

Wow. Just wow.

Nixon from Tyler, TX

Do you think there's any chance the Jags try to get a first- or second-round pick for Brian Thomas Jr. during the offseason? Just seems like the offense is doing just as well if not better without him.

Six games remain in the 2025 regular season, which means much will happen before the Jaguars assess their roster moving forward. This answer is not specific to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. It's saying I expect this regime to assess all football-related matters at all times and make moves that will help the Jaguars win. Some moves will be surprising and some won't. If we have learned anything about these decision-makers, we have learned that.

Tim from Lancaster, PA

The fact of the matter is that no one in the AFC is unbeatable. The New England Patriots' schedule is laughable. The Denver Broncos are winning games despite Jekyll and Hyde quarterback play, the old guard of the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens and Chiefs are out of sorts and the Colts' quarterback is a massive question mark. The next month is where the elite teams shore up their weaknesses and rise to the top. So why not the Jags? We're as dominant and aggravating as anyone else in the AFC.

Why not the Jags?

Sean from Oakleaf, FL

Am I right in saying the Jaguars control their own destiny for the AFC South title because they are one game behind the Colts but have two games left to play with them?

Yes, if the Jaguars do not lose again they will win the AFC South. That means they control their destiny to win the division.
