O-Zone: First of many

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Kenneth from Jacksonville

What? Why? Make it make sense. Don't bother. This will never make sense.

My Scooby Sense – not my Scobee or Spidey sense – tells me you may be upset and confused by the Jaguars trading running back Tank Bigsby to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, a deal that reportedly sent a fifth- and sixth-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft to the Jaguars. I understand the confusion and angst because Bigsby is a good player who led the Jaguars in rushing last season. But while that's true, it's also true that Travis Etienne Jr. is the starter and a quality fit for this offense. Rookie Bhayshul Tuten also is a quality fit and has a chance to be a starter for this team in the future. Those two players need carries in this scheme. Rookie LeQuint Allen is the team's best pass-blocking running back with a chance to be a very good third-down back. It was a crowded running back room and Bigsby had trade value. While I never love trading quality players for future draft selections, that's how it makes sense.

The two things that that seem clearer after Week 1 are that Hunter will not be used extensively on defense when the full-timers are playing well and that the offense has more weapons than any Jaguars team in quite a few years.

You have drawn two conclusions from Week 1. The second conclusion – that this team has more offensive weapons than any Jaguars team in a while – is from this view correct. The wide receivers go at least four deep with real ability to matter in the offense, with the running backs about at that number – three after the Bigsby trade. They also have multiple tight ends who can strain defenses, with Brenton Strange emerging as a first-tier player. Your first conclusion – that rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter will not play defense much if other defenders are playing well – is from this view probably incorrect. Hunter played just six snaps Sunday on defense because he missed 10 days during training camp and because he's still growing in his role. The Jaguars love him on defense and believe he needs to be on the field in the secondary. I expect he will steadily play more defensively as the season continues.

Chris from Mandarin

Josh Hines-Allen is making too much money to be invisible for the vast majority of a game against a bad team.

If you thought Jaguars defensive end Josh Hines-Allen was invisible Sunday you were watching a different game than I was watching.

Brendan from The Banana Patch

I said it once and I'll scream this to the moon if I have to. Josh Hines-Allen sucks, and he loses pass rush integrity and goes too far up the field way too many times to count. It's all over his tape. So undisciplined rushing! I don't care how many pressures he has, stop allowing mobile quarterbacks to torch us with the legs!

Hines-Allen doesn't suck. Insider tip: Mobile quarterbacks hurt pretty much every team in the NFL. It's how the league is built these days.

GP from Savannah, GA

Big O, stout defensive line and aggressive backfield is refreshing to see.

A lot went well for the Jaguars Sunday. Their defense against the run overall was very encouraging. Their communication, aggression and playmaking in the secondary also was very encouraging. It's difficult to draw conclusions from Week 1, but there was more good than bad defensively. A lot more. That's all you can ask in the regular-season opener.

Brian from Round Rock, Texas

So, why do you change the website when the season starts? Do you think changing the website is a good experience for the readers? It's annoying. It reminds me that we have to wait to change the uniforms to when we change the stadium. That is also annoying. Its childlike thinking. Must be a Tony thing. And I don't mean the Hall of Famer.

You mad, bro?

Derek from Brookings, SD

Very encouraging start the the season! Dare I say we might have a complete (blocking and catching) TE1?

Strange is a front-end player at his position, a player who can block and receive at a high level. He's one of the better players on this roster.

Fred from Naples, FL

Speaking of re-branding, I like the new layout of the Jaguars website except for one thing. The O-Zone is now towards the bottom of the opening page. What happened? Did you get demoted?

Maybe. I don't know. I don't get a lot of correspondence from the higher-ups. What's "an attachment?"

Chris from Ohio

I feel like our offense never feels like it is in rhythm. And it seems like Trevor and BTJ are not in sync with each other. Or after reviewing the film are they rolling coverage toward and double teaming BTJ?

I'm not sure I understand the first sentiment. This Jaguars offense has played one game, rushing for 200 yards and scoring 26 points. Either way, one game is not remotely enough of a sample size to say the offense is "never in rhythm." Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. weren't quite in sync Sunday. It's Week 1. There's ample time for sync.

Henry from Florahome

I like how the schedule brings a team each week that appears to be better than the week before. I think this team will progress the same way.

The Jaguars play the Cincinnati Bengals in Cincinnati Sunday. They're really good. If teams keep getting better every week compared to the Bengals the Jaguars will have a very difficult schedule in 2025.

Micah from Chicago

Feel like our defense gets held allllllll the time and it's never called!

OK.

Robert from Weaverville

Undefeated!!!!! Looks like we might have one of the best D-lines in the league this year! Am I a delusional fan?

The Jaguars' defensive line had a good game Sunday. I'll wait until mid-October (ish) before calling it one of the best in the NFL.

Josh from Lakewood

The blocking on the two touchdown plays was *at least* forty percent better than what we had to work with last year. Probably was just the play calling, though...

It's always play-calling in the NFL.

Jimjim from Eugene

Is it true that Liam Coen is the first Jaguars coach to win his first game?

No. Doug Marrone won his first game as the Jaguars' interim head coach in 2016 and his first game as "permanent" head coach in 2017. He and Coen are the only head coaches to win their Jaguars head coaching debuts.

Sascha from Cologne

Hey, John. Winning's awesome, I'm all for it. But I've still got two things on my mind. Did Trevor really show that much progress? To me, the biggest difference was the O-line. And do you really think it was worth spending that much draft capital on Travis? I know it's too early to judge but I think he has to play a lot more on both sides to justify that pick or am I too critical?

It's Week 1. There's a long way to go on both of these topcs.

Brian from Greenwood, IN

Not a question, but an observation. I think the biggest takeaway from this game, in my opinion, is that this team did everything they said they were going to do all offseason. They protected the QB, they ran the ball, they created turnovers, they played physical against the run, they harassed the QB, and they overcame adversity. That is so refreshing.

NFL teams, particularly ones with new regimes, typically spend the offseason outlining how they want to play. They rarely play how they want to play in Week 1 to the extent that the Jaguars played Sunday.

Lee from Charlotte

Can't win them all if you don't win the first!

I googled this. You're correct.

J.Hooks from Orange Park

Bummed for Wingard who grabbed a pick six only to be called back. I felt really bad for this guy. He's been here forever and has earned his starting role. It sucked seeing his pick six nullified.

Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard indeed had a really cool interception return for a touchdown negated by penalty Sunday. My sense is a lot of people felt bad for Wingard, who is a likable players and a great story who has become a fan favorite – and who earned the starting safety position this season. But know this about Wingard: He's a professional who always has considered himself a starter. He's not motivated by being a "cool story" or by touchdowns. He's motivated by showing he's a legitimate starting safety in this league. He's doing that, and that's more important to Wingard than a late-game "moment in the sun."

Don from Marshall, NC

Congratulations to Liam Coen and his staff on their first of many wins! Go Jaguars!

When it comes to being fired up for Coen and the gang, Don remains reassuringly and undeniably "all in."
