O-Zone: Flaunt the imperfection

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Crash from Glen Saint Mary, FL

Obi Wan! Looking forward to crushing the Patriots here in River City next season.

We're still wrapping up the 2025 postseason – and the Seattle Seahawks' 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX Sunday apparently has left many observers with the idea that the Patriots are suddenly terrible. While it's not uncommon for observers to thusly dismiss losing Super Bowl teams, it's significant to remember that the Patriots before Sunday won 16 of 19 games – navigating the same AFC playoff field that no other team, including the Jaguars, were able to navigate. This is not to say the Patriots were worlds ahead of the rest of the AFC. The thought here remains that five-to-six teams – the Patriots, Jaguars, Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos – were essentially equal at the top of the AFC and that any of those teams could have been in the Super Bowl. It is to say that the Patriots and the rest of those teams likely will be very capable next season – and the Jaguars must start over and work to get better than they were in 2025. That will give them the best chance of beating the Patriots in Jacksonville next season – and of getting to where the Patriots got Sunday.

You mentioned that Drake Maye did not play as well in the postseason as he did during the regular season. Do you think it's because they arguably had the easiest schedule in the NFL?

It's unfair to say quarterback Drake Maye and the Patriots got rich on an easy schedule; you don't win 16 games by chance. It is fair to say the Patriots played four of the NFL's best six defenses in the postseason – the Chargers, Texans, Broncos and Seahawks. A lot of quarterbacks would have been challenged during that stretch.

No question, just a comment. Thanks to your Nostradamus impression I won all four of my Super Bowl bets. Your prediction that Seattle would pull away in the fourth quarter was spot on. You are the KOAF!

While it's hard to deny that I indeed am "awesome," and while this awesomeness manifests itself in myriad ways, there was little need to be Nostradamus when projecting the Seahawks to win Sunday. It was only reasonable this would be a game in which Seattle pulled away late. They were both defensive teams – and being outmanned on the line of scrimmage, the Patriots figured to try to play a bit conservatively to keep the game close. Seattle figured to play patiently early and rely on its superior lines to wear the Patriots down over time. The better team usually pulls away late in that situation as the other team takes chances as time runs short. Super Bowl LX followed that pattern pretty closely. This doesn't mean every such matchup follows that pattern, but this one did.

You smugly seem confident that the Jaguars will be better next season. I don't see how you can assume that. They went 13-4 this past season. Odds are they're not as good.

I am neither confident in nor pessimistic about the Jaguars improving next season. I have pointed out several ways they can improve and several areas they need to improve. I also have emphasized that while quarterback Trevor Lawrence improved dramatically in 2025, he must continue that ascension. Interior pass rush and secondary from this view will be offseason priorities for the Jaguars. If they can improve those areas, they can be better next season. That will be difficult. But it's the NFL. It's supposed to be difficult.

I know you say to be nice in here, but I do have to admit I'm very, very happy K'Lavon Chaisson did not get a Super Bowl ring. I'm tired of all these first rounders not doing jack diddly squat, leaving and reaching the pinnacle of football.

Chaisson, a linebacker and a first-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2020 NFL Draft, is now with the Patriots – and did not earn a Super Bowl ring Sunday. Chaisson indeed has improved since leaving the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent following the 2023 season – registering five sacks with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2024 and 7.5 with the Patriots this past season. While anyone has a right to whatever rooting interest they choose, I can't get on board with rooting against Chaisson. He was largely ineffective in four seasons here, but it wasn't like he wasn't trying to be good – and he was always a decent guy. Good on him for finding the right situation.

I think Bradford might be on to a great idea. I'd love to take my grandsons to listen and talk Jaguars football with lots of folks. I'm sure it would be hugely successful.

"Successful."

Maybe it's because I am too old, but I just don't understand why there are so many images per second on the halftime show. I just couldn't get it. Didn't care for the music but that's OK. All them Hulu Hulu girls and no time to watch is like drinking a non-alcohol beer. That was a really good team Seattle put together this year. The Jaguars would have been a better game than the Patriots. Go Jaguars!

When it comes to absorbing the Super Bowl halftime show with typical perspective and bemusement – and perhaps confusing streaming television with a popular Hawaiian dance – Don remains "all in."

Sam from Orlando, FL

Where's Don?

Right up there.

Will they re-sign Montaric Brown?

Brown, a seventh-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2022 NFL Draft, emerged as a starter and key player for this team the last two seasons. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on the March 11 start of the 2026 NFL League Year. The Jaguars like him. Whether the sides agree on a price and a role remains to be seen.

Would you ever have a fan on the podcast? I am sure any KOAF readers would make for a lively discussion. Jags HQ would be good too. Being able to talk Jags football with the BIG GUNS, you included of course! Even if the BIG Four poo-pooed the inevitable fan suggestions, and advice, it would be very entertaining. The big possibility of Gary from ST. Augustine telling BIG Tony, James and Liam you suck, would expose him as not nice.

There is a Big Three around the Jaguars. That's Head Coach Liam Coen, General Manager James Gladstone and Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tony Boselli. There is no world where this writer makes that a foursome. Your premise is that this would be entertaining. Not all premises are correct premises.

With regards to an O-Zone Fest. I met you once at The Finery Pub in London back in 2017 at the Union Jax Fan Party the night before we destroyed the Ravens. Although I would say that meeting you was certainly better than "no great shakes," I am not certain I would make the six-hour drive north unless it was tied to a Jags home game weekend. Just a thought.

"Six minutes." /Fixed.

Hello, John. With all the talk of trading, free agency, draft and award snubs, the main thing circling my mind is if there's any talk of uniform updates. I tend to see chatter that it will happen when the stadium renovations are finished, but wouldn't it be better to do it as soon as possible? It seems Boselli implied we would revert branding and uniforms back to the pre-2009 styling. I'm all for that, but does that rule out a new rebranding that more so honors heritage while being new?

NFL teams by rule may unveil new uniforms every five seasons. Because the Jaguars debuted their current uniforms in the 2018 season, they therefore could get new uniforms at any time. I expect the Jaguars will have new uniforms in 2028 when the renovated Stadium of the Future opens. I expect there to be a serious nod to the past because the throwbacks/Prowlers/original uniforms are cool and many fans like them. Precise details remain to be seen because it's 2026 and not 2028.

Now that that is over! A Serious question, "Do you ever employ a ghost writer? Recent one of the answers posted said, "I confess I don't answer every question perfectly or in ideal detail. This is yet another flaw Mrs. Ozone can add to her list." Surely (not Shirley) someone was filling in for you on this answer! Maybe it was one of your many aids or interns?

I didn't say in this recent O-Zone answer that I purposely didn't answer every question perfectly or in ideal deal. I simply said it didn't happen. Consider this an admission that I am not perfect. Just close. Really close.
