JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Is the O-Line the biggest question mark entering the season?
It's certainly up there. From this view, the Jaguars position groups with the biggest unknowns entering 2025 Training Camp are the secondary and the offensive line. Major questions in the secondary center around exactly how the Jaguars will use rookie Travis Hunter at cornerback and how the roles of veterans such as cornerback Jourdan Lewis/Montaric Brown will adapt around how Hunter is used. There is also the undecided question of who will start at safety next to veteran Eric Murray, with veteran Andrew Wingard and rookie Caleb Ransaw seemingly the most likely candidates. Offensive line feels equally uncertain, and that's very much by design. The Jaguars want the offensive line to be as much "open competition" as possible in'25 camp. I would pencil in left tackle Walker Little, left guard Ezra Cleveland, center Robert Hainsey, right guard Patrick Mekari and right tackle Anton Harrison as Week 1 starters. But I wouldn't use pen at any of those positions and it wouldn't be overly surprising to see players such as Fred Johnson, Chuma Edoga and Wyatt Milum – and others – pushing hard for starting positions and winning them during training camp. That doesn't mean the offensive line will be weak in '25; the Jaguars absolutely don't believe that's the case. It means there will be more real competition at the position than usual beginning late next month.

If I am correct, most of the success wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. had last year came after Trevor was hurt. It seemed that Trevor did not have good chemistry with him. Was this because Trevor had more faith in wide receiver Christian Kirk and tight end Evan Engram as targets? Play calling? Has the offseason program addressed this? Is having all new receivers going to be a problem going forward?
Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence having (mostly) "all new" receivers shouldn't be an issue in 2025 – at least not for long and particularly if those receivers are better than the previous receivers. And while it's true that Thomas' production accelerated with Lawrence out late in the 2025 season, I wouldn't worry about Thomas and Lawrence having chemistry moving forward. Thomas is good. Lawrence is good. Good quarterbacks and good receivers tend to develop chemistry.

Happy Dead Zone.
Is it?

Hi, KOAGF. I guess it's conceivable that we can see a game end where Hunter scores all of the touchdowns for the Jags and gets all of the turnovers for the defense. It will be interesting to see how things play out this season.
I expect there's a decent chance Hunter would get one of those cool Player of the Week awards if your scenario occurs. Who knows?

California income tax on $30 million is about $4 million. New York income tax would be about $3 million. You think Travis is glad he plays in Jax?
I think Hunter is glad he plays for the Jaguars and I think state taxes – or the lack thereof –are just one reason that's the case.

I think I remember you mentioning Norm Macdonald as your all- time favorite comic and I also have him at or near the top. Who rounds out your Top 5?
Top five: Norm Macdonald, Woody Allen, Bill Burr, Richard Pryor, George Carlin. No. 1 stays No. 1 always. The rest of the list rotates.

First, allow me to say, I love Jaxson de Ville. As with the rest of this team, I've grown up with the guy. The rappelling from the lights is, without question, the dopest pregame or any other feat I've ever seen any team's mascot execute. Never mind that dude can drop a golf shot on the 17th green at TPC from the tee box in full Jaxson get up. Now, all that having been said - couldn't we also use like a "looks ready for BATTLE, spikes on the shoulder pads, SCARY?" Jaguars mascot, too? Along the lines that strikes fear in the hearts of opposing team's fans upon approach? Something that says ... I don't know ... "We're not <expletive> around", maybe? I mean, right? Or is that just me?
I thought about this question a moment, and I was struck by the time and effort invested. It then occurred to me you were asking about a mascot, and I opted to not match your time and effort.

"It appears you're mis-analyzing or overanalyzing the situation a bit." - all I needed to know, this confirms it. Thanks, sir.
I am the king of all funk.

Fans might forget that Trevor Lawrence's season was ended by an illegal hit on a sliding quarterback that earned the defensive player a three-game suspension. I consider that an outlier injury. Having said that, do you believe Lawrence will run less this year after nearly 1100 yards rushing in his first four seasons? The concern would be Baker Mayfield, under Coach Coen's play calling, set a career high in rushing yards last year at 378.
I expect Lawrence will run next season when opportunities present themselves or when the situation forces him to run to escape duress. I don't expect Head Coach Liam Coen's offense to regularly have Lawrence's running be a focal point.

I know that training camp starts July 22 for veterans. Any idea when the Jags will announce the training camp schedule?
Relatively soon, I suppose.

I have a random question. Is Travis Hunter going to play more snaps than other skill players? If so, he's going to need to consume a lot of calories. I know what that does to the body as someone who put in a lot of leg work and had a high protein diet for years. That's a delicate line for him to not bulk up which could affect his speed. I'm very curious to see what his diet and nutrition looks like when he's in full swing of playing both positions. Do you have any insights on his diet plan or can we ask if he cares to share that with fans?
Hunter has been playing cornerback and wide receiver his entire football career, so he has at least a general idea about his caloric needs as he enters the NFL. He, like most NFL players, likely will add bulk in the coming seasons. This is a natural occurrence as young men grow into older men and it's also a result of year-round training and nutrition in the NFL. The Jaguars have a plan for Hunter playing both ways that involves all aspects of preparation – rest, practices, meetings, nutrition, conditioning, etc., etc. The team and Hunter haven't shared all the specifics of that plan yet.

Greatest American author by far was William S. Gray. No other had anywhere remotely close to the same impact on our society for the past 100 years. And man, could he ever paint a vivid picture, with deep emotion, and capture intense action with just a few simple words.
Fair.

I'm guessing there is no way to explain it, but have you ever seen such a bipolar organization? It seems the Jags either make the playoffs or draft in the top five. Even in 2023, when they went 9-8, the first half of the season was good and then the second half of the season they just went off a cliff.
I don't cover all NFL organizations – and I suspect there are others that frustrate their fans at least close to the level the Jaguars have frustrated theirs in recent seasons. And while the Jaguars indeed have had crazy drop-offs after their rare successes in the last decade and a half, I don't have a great theory to explain this other than they probably weren't as great as they were just good in the seasons they contended. I'm not big on calling successful seasons "flukes" because you don't fluke into the NFL postseason. Still, the foundations on which the Jaguars' recent successful seasons were built were in retrospect fragile. Those foundations subsequently shattered in stunning fashion.

How the hell did we end up with a Monday night game? I thought one of the benefits of a miserable 4-13 is not having to suffer through those night games.
I was surprised the NFL scheduled the Jaguars on Monday Night Football in 2025, too. They have one game on MNF – Week 5 against the Kansas City Chiefs in Jacksonville. Fortuitous happenings happen sometimes.

Any disappointments after becoming a sports writer?
We talk a lot here in the O-Zone about the importance of being nice. This, by any measure, was not nice.
