O-Zone: Good feeling

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Bob from Coosawatchie, SC

Kind of wacky, rollercoaster, gutsy win. No style points in the NFL.

This sums up the Jaguars' 27-24 overtime victory over the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., Sunday about as succinctly as possible. The victory indeed was not pretty and it was as much about guts and grit – and as rollercoaster – as one could imagine. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw 3 interceptions and lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown. He more than countered that with 3 touchdown passes – including one late in the fourth quarter to wide receiver Parker Washington – and a game-winning drive in overtime. The Jaguars' defense had its best pass-rushing day of the season with six sacks and continued to be very good against the run – all while playing without much of its secondary and without defensive end Travon Walker. Bottom line: The Jaguars won a second consecutive game and are now 7-4 – in sixth place in the AFC and one game behind the division-leading Indianapolis Colts (8-3) in the AFC South. Who needs style points? Who cares about rollercoasters? This is contending late-season football. This is fun.

Hi, KOAGF. That was such a maddening, cardiac, exhausting, time-to-contemplate-my-life victory. What's next? I need to rest a lot before the Titans game. The NFL is hard.

Good eye. Perhaps it's time to worry less about what this team isn't and grasp what it is. It wins close games. It fights. It doesn't quit. It finds a way. It's perhaps not a great team. But it's a good, contending team and the thought here is it can stay that way until at least early January.

John from St Augustine, FL

7-4 is 7-4. No matter how you get there!

Yup.

Big Jags Fan from Jacksonville

A win is a win, right O? Great effort in OT by all three phases!

A win absolutely is a win and a win always will be a win in the NFL, fan fanning to the contrast notwithstanding.

Tom from Moncks Corner

Are you sure that was Loser Lawrence out there and not Ryan Leaf with long hair? He is no good and never will be. What a waste of $275 million.

Lawrence threw 3 interceptions and lost a fumble Sunday. He also threw 3 touchdown passes. I suppose we can squeeze every ounce of joy out of our lives and clench our stomachs breaking down every mistake, but he's the Jaguars' starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. This team is contending for the postseason. He's a reason for that. They're still a maddening, frustrating team. He's a reason for that, too. Grab the Pepto-Bismol, I guess. Late November is upon us.

Dave from Jacksonville

What happened to Jaguars wide receiver Dyami Brown? Is he still on the roster?

Yes.

Gary from Centerville, OH

Everyone is down on Trevor. And I get it. Four turnovers is unacceptable. But he drove the Jaguars down the field late in the game, again. He's done that multiple times this year and deserves some credit for that (and blame for the turnovers).

Yup.

Amy from Jacksonville

Why does the offense seem of out of order? Are they still getting used to the new system?? Lawerence doesn't look good.

The offense seems out of order for a number of reasons, perhaps mostly because it's not hitting explosive plays. That can make every drive feel like a grind. I do think they're still getting used to Head Coach Liam Coen's system, though it's important to acknowledge they were playing very well in the three games leading into Sunday – and they scored three touchdowns and 27 points Sunday. Lawrence indeed didn't look good for a lot of Sunday. And then he looked really good at times, particularly late. Here we go.

Mark from Orange Park, FL

I hate this team. Dumb coaches, bad players and bad decision-makers. Boo to the whole organization. I quit.

Sounds as if Mark is going to miss some entertaining professional football.

Keith from Saint Augustine, FL

I don't want to hear this nonsense about an ugly win. When you have been a Jaguar fan since the beginning and especially the last few years every win is BEAUTIFUL!

Damn right.

Donut from Saint Johns

With so many starters out and what can be described as a patchwork team, glad to see the Jaguars continuing to find a way to win games!

Good eye. While it's easy and understandable to wring hands about what the Jaguars aren't through 11 games, it's fair to remember that they're 7-4 and have won three or four games while trying to strain through the "injury-riddled" part of their schedule. They're still down much of their secondary. They were without wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., right tackle Anton Harrison and Walker Sunday. They are piecing together victories and staying in it. That's significant and it's what they must do in their situation.

Clayton from Shawnee, OK

Minus-four in the turnover margin and the Jaguars win? There's some close-game magic this team has had this fall. As you wrote three weeks ago or so, "Buckle up."

Yup.

Luke from Brisbane, Australia

Add me to the list of folks saying 'just kick the field goal!'

This references Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen's decision to go for a first down on fourth-and-1 from the Cardinals 19 leading 24-21 with 1:40 remaining in the fourth quarter Sunday. Lawrence's long pass to wide receiver Tim Patrick was incomplete, and the Cardinals drove for the game-tying field goal. Many fans criticized the decision. The old-school pundit in me disliked the decision. My good friend and prominent local attorney promptly texted me criticizing the decision. Coen said of the decision: "We've been aggressive all season when it comes to those decisions. Us growing as an offense [and] us growing as a team is trusting them in some of those moments to go make those plays and go execute in those situations. It didn't work out this time, but hopefully those guys get the message that ultimately we need to go execute in those moments and for us to close people out on our terms." This is the modern NFL. Coaches now go when past coaches kicked. The past isn't walking through that door.

Bill from Hawthorn Woods, IL

Look, I get the analytics on fourth-and-1 are essentially a "go for it" anymore. That said, being up 3 and Arizona with no times out, you have to kick the field goal and make them go the length of the field. The offense was not "on," and analytics don't account for that. This team needs whatever points are in front of them. Liam made the wrong call on that one. Thoughts?

I think coaches now coach that situation to "end the game" and I think that's not changing anytime soon. I also think when those decisions fail it's easy to criticize and it's easy to forget when the decisions succeed.

Jonathon from Jacksonville

All I can say is, this is just embarrassing and the Colts and Chiefs are loving it.

The Jaguars won a game Sunday with essentially their entire secondary and one of the two or three best players on their defense out. They won that game on the road despite committing four turnovers – and having essentially revamped their entire receiving corps in the last month. They are 7-4 through 11 games. Many, many NFL teams would love to be that embarrassing.

Jake from Cary, NC

We seem like we are a quarterback away from being a legitimately good football team.

The Jaguars are 7-4 and in the No. 6 position in the AFC. They have victories this season over five teams .500 or better. They are by any definition a legitimately good football team.

JT from Palm Coast, FL

Ugly as hell and yes, our quarterback must improve, but a win is a win is a win!!!

A record of 7-4 with 5 victories over teams .500 or better is not "ugly."

Josh from Atlanta, GA

JHA did everything in his power to win this game. The no sacks people can piss off.

Jaguars defensive end Josh Hines-Allen indeed was outstanding Sunday, as he has been more often than not this season. He had a sack in overtime and was credited with nine quarterback pressures. Pressures matter. Because they do.

Andy from Alpharetta, GA

I'm impressed (legitimately). Wasn't pretty but to lose the turnover margin by 4 and still win the game? It's hard not to believe right now. Yeah, they need to clean stuff up and yes Trevor had a bad game and yes, I'm still concerned that JHA just disappears. But I'm also really enjoying watching what is happening. One fer these Jags.

Hines-Allen had nine quarterback pressures and a sack Sunday.

Kevin from Sault Ste. Marie, ON, Canada

I feel like the "same ol' Jags" would've lost that game...

Your feelings do you credit, sir – Jean Valjean.
