O-Zone: Hearts of the franchise

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

JT from Palm Coast, FL

Really advanced sign-stealing system, huh? I'm a little more confident of our first victory in SF now.

You're referencing the latest storyline of Jaguars-San Francisco 49ers week, with 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh on Thursday saying this about the Jaguars: "They have a – legally – a really advanced signal-stealing-type system where they always find a way to put themselves in an advantageous situation. They do a great job of it. They formation you to just try to find any nugget they can. So we have to be great with our signals and we have to be great with our communication to combat some of the tells that we might give on the field." It was admittedly an odd – and oddly-timed – statement to make days before the teams play at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., Sunday. Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen on Friday was tactful in his response when he said: "I'm not going to speak on that fully right now." Coen also added: "By formation, by game plan, by working really hard as a coaching staff throughout the week, trying to get indicators by your formation, motion, shift, pre-snap … those are the things that you're trying to do as a coach if you're trying to put your players in the best position to be successful, whether it's attacking man or zone coverage with your formations, motions and concepts. It's a lot of hard work that goes into game planning and trying to put your players in the best position to be successful." I suppose "Legal SignstealingGate" is a fairly tame "gate" as NFL game-week controversies go. The Jaguars have a smart, aggressive coaching staff. Identifying formations with pre-snap motion is a major part of what they do. If they're grinding and legally getting advantages however they can get them … good on them, one would think. Wouldn't one?

I felt Salah's comments were complimentary while watching the press conference and he was speaking very highly of the Jaguars' coaches. However, there seems to be a narrative around this press conference that what he said was controversial or meant to be a dig. How did it come across to you? How did it seem Liam Coen felt about the comments?

Saleh's comments came across as partly complementary and partly odd. How did it seemed Coen felt about the comments? He did a nice job of being tight-lipped, measured and not revealing his feelings.

It goes without saying I'm hoping for a win this Sunday. Also, if the Los Angeles Rams take down the Indianapolis Colts we'll be tied for first in the division. But on top of that, wouldn't a tie between the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans just be the gravy of the week?

Sure.

Austin from Jacksonville

Travon Walker is a beast. I pity those who underestimate this man.

Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker has been a really good player for a while. He entered the league good and has improved steadily. He has been criticized at times and overlooked at others. It seems people are increasingly seeing that he is really good. Good on them, I suppose.

Steve from Hilton Head

John. How many NFL players have been lost to spontaneous combustion?

Gee, I'm real sorry your mom blew up, Steve.

Brendan from The Banana Patch

Shoot it to me straight, Are the Jags exercising the demons this week?

The Jaguars have played two road games against the 49ers in their 31 seasons, so it's not as if not having won there is some cloud hanging over the franchise. I think the Jaguars can win Sunday if they run well, limit turnovers and force the 49ers into takeaways.

Josh from Atlanta, GA

Jourdan Lewis is playing like an All-Pro. What a signing. Would you agree?

Cornerback Jourdan Lewis is tracking early as one of the better unrestricted free agent signings in this team's history. We're only three games into this, and that's a bold statement, but he has been strikingly impactful in a way that seems sustainable.

Woody from Dunlap

KOAF: While in California, perhaps the team bus could stop at Lester Hayes' house and buy a few cans of the famous "Stickum" left over in his garage?

Stickum is now against NFL rules.

Steven from Sunrise, FL

Are the Jaguars going to continue wearing the old school uniforms? Love the throw back!!

The Jaguars are expected to wear their Prowler Throwback uniforms three more times this season after wearing them last Sunday against the Houston Texans – home against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 5 (October 6), home against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 14 (December 7) and home against the Tennessee Titans in Week 18 (January 3-4). They may not wear them any more than that this season per NFL rules.

Yo O-Zone!!! Do you think that the emergence of the run game with more sustained drives helped the defense improvement? It seems that our defense has a little more gas in the tank late in games than in recent years. Or is this just a by-product of playing with a lead? What says you, O-Zone???

Playing with a lead and improved run game always helps a defense, and those factors no doubt have helped the Jaguars' defense this season. Lewis also has helped, as has the addition of safety Eric Murray and improvement of linebacker Devin Lloud. Moving Arik Armstead inside can't be overlooked. Also: The Jaguars' playing zone defense has factored into increased takeaways, with seven interceptions so far this season. These defensive players are also buying what defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile is selling, and that always helps.

What's the latest on where the Jags will be playing in 2027? Any idea when that decision will be announced?

It appears it will be either Gainesville or Orlando. Soon.

Nick from London, England

What is the hold up with new additions to the Pride? At the very least there are a couple of names no sane person believes shouldn't be in, yet Boselli is the only player to have been inducted since 2016. What are we waiting for?

Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Boselli was the first Pride of the Jaguars inductee in 2006, with Tom Coughlin enshrined in 2024. I expect it could be a while before we see more inductees, perhaps when the Stadium of the Future opens in 2028. Just a hunch.

Michael from The Mean Streets of Arlington

Well, three games into it Liam is now tied with former Jaguars Head Coach Urban Meyer on the Jags' all-time win list.

Indeed he is.

Coach Coen seem to be this laid-back, easy-going, sweet-talking family man with nice upbringing and flawless politeness. Now we've seen him as angry, bitter, vocal, stuff throwing, hair-pulling monster on the sidelines. Or as we would say - an average Jaguars fan for the past 15 years. Yeah, he is definitely DuuuvaaaaaL

Coen from this view is a really good head coach and a high-end offensive mind with remarkable ability to connect with players. I don't see him as a monster, though I'm not sure anyone would describe him as laid-back, easy-going and/or sweet-talking.

A story on why the Jags aren't just a sports team to some people. I grew up poor in Gainesville, the son of single mom who worked doubles daily as an ER nurse at Shands to give us as much as she could. We never had a dime for tickets growing up. Right before my eighth birthday, my mom's longtime coworker retired and gifted my mother his newly purchased Jaguars season tickets he wasn't going to use. It changed our lives. Once we received these tickets, my mother knew she couldn't let them go to waste. She would save all week for our Sunday trips to Jacksonville. Every Sunday, we forgot all our problems and were together as a family. We'd look forward to it all week. No matter how tough our lives were, how bad things got financially, how hard my mom had to work, for one day we had our family and our team to bring us together and it made our world a better place for that day. My little brother, mother and I still chat daily about our Jaguars, keeping us together across 2,000 miles and a lot of changes throughout our lives. This new regime - the heart Gladstone and Coen and Boselli show - feels like the first time the team understands what football means to some of us. It's the heart fans like my brother, my mother and myself have always put into this team and always wanted to get back. I can't tell you how excited we are for this team, and this staff. They care, and that means something.

Well worth the read.
