O-Zone: Just understood

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Jay from Jacksonville, NC

Oh, I'll call the Jags GOOD, alright. Seneca (the philosopher, not Seneca Wallace, the former Cleveland Browns quarterback) said, "Luck is where preparation meets opportunity." Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen has these boys PREPARED, and now they're getting the OPPORTUNITY to show the world what they got. The New York Jets might be starting an undrafted free agent at quarterback on Sunday, the Denver Broncos are a TOUGH defense, the Indianapolis Colts might run out Philip Rivers or Brett Rypien at quarterback and the Tennessee Titans are coming HERE. We got a TOUGH defense, an EXPLOSIVE offense and a kicker who can drill it from St Augustine. Life is good being a Jags fan. The lights ARE twinkling, Clark. What's the ceiling for this team, KOAF?

If this email is perhaps a bit "all over the place," it nonetheless reflects the general enthusiasm around the Jaguars (9-4) these days as they prepare to play the New York Jets (3-10) at EverBank Stadium Sunday. Enthusiasm is high for the Jaguars – from Jacksonville, Florida all the way to Jacksonville, North Carolina and presumably to all points in between – and with reason. The Jaguars indeed are good. They're good defensively. And offensively. And on special teams. They're getting better in recent weeks at pass rush and quarterback. They appear to be getting healthy at the right time and they have a feeling of peaking at that same right time. But perhaps your most pertinent point came early in your email, and that's that Coen has this team prepared for each game. That has enabled this team to show the world "what they got." That's a major storyline this week and I sense it will remain that way through the end of the season. The Jaguars are confident. This doesn't guarantee a division title, or a playoff spot. Or even winning Sunday. But the sense is they are motivated to continue showing the NFL world they are good. What's the ceiling for their version of good? It's pretty high. I don't know if there's a limit to what this team can do.

I saw Trevor on the injury report with an ankle injury. Is this a legit cause for concern or just a precaution?

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is on the injury report this week with an ankle injury. He practiced limited Wednesday and full Thursday. It's not expected to be a major concern.

It feels good! Yeah!! Go Jags!!!

Go Jags.

Mike from Lakeland, FL

Any given Sunday in the NFL. All 32 teams in the league have guys that have the potential to play spoiler, Williams in the middle of the D line seems like an easy favorite to play that role on Sunday.

Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams is a monstrously talented defensive tackle who absolutely has the potential to play spoiler. He also plays for the Dallas Cowboys.

Jordan from Mandarin

Trevor has been playing franchise-level quarterback play as of late. There's a lot of football left but what a progression from earlier this season.

Good eye.

Happy Biff from the Land of the AFC South Leaders

Have you ever seen a linebacker with hands so akin to a wide receiver? How does he make those grabs? Devin, my Devin.

Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd has had a knack for making plays when he is around the ball throughout his NFL career. He has been around the ball more this season and therefore has five interceptions, a remarkable number for a linebacker. One fer Lloyd.

Chris from Norfolk, VA

A few weeks back I wrote that TL would have to become more of a threat with his legs. You wrote that's not what he was or how they see him. Still sure about that?

Lawrence is not a "running quarterback" in the sense that his running is not going to be the focal point of an offense and he's not going to run very often by design. You don't want him running to the extent that he increases wear and tear or injury risk significantly. But yes … there's little question that Lawrence's increased effectiveness running has been a positive for the Jaguars' offense in recent weeks.

Dallas from Sioux Falls, SD

Nine and 4 in the 904! That's big. The season does feel like a roller coaster but – like a wise man once said – "You can't get to 9-4 on luck." What are you seeing as a storyline heading into the Jets? Injuries and getting healthy? Staying diligent on the preparation for the trap game? Something else?

The Jaguars have been good since Week 1. They lost three times in four games to three of the NFL's best teams. They must play on Sunday the way they have been playing. Physical, with emotion, running, stopping the run, forcing takeaways, minimizing giveaways, hitting big plays in the passing game, rushing the passer effectively, staying focused. If they check all of most of those boxes, they'll continue to play well.

Woody from Dunlap

KOAF: This team is so much fun to watch! Kudos to each and every person in the organization! Looking ahead to the Jets, it appears their starting QB against the Jags could potentially be any one of three: Justin Fields (knee), Tyrod Taylor (groin) or Brady Cook (rookie who finished last week's game). How does the coaching staff prepare the defense in such a situation?

Diligently, and with focus on all three quarterbacks. One reason some former players opt to not coach is it can be quite time-consuming.

Scott from St. Johns, FL

Hey, John: Stopping the run is one of the keys to a winning season. The Jaguars have yet to allow an opponent to run for more than 100 yards in a game this season. This is an amazing accomplishment! From your viewpoint, what are the main reasons that the run defense been so successful this year?

Veteran nose tackle DaVon Hamilton. The rest of the front seven. A focus on getting off blocks and tackling effectively.

John from Pinehurst, NC

Since you often chide readers for not being nice, what's the deal with Gary from Augustine? He is never nice to our KOAF, but you publish him anyway.

Gary from St. Augustine is a visionary with a keen eye into the soul of a man.

Chris from Mandarin

It's true that it will be difficult to re-sign Devin Lloyd, running back Travis Etienne Jr. and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers … practically impossible. I foresee another wrench being thrown into this. I imagine defensive end Travon Walker is going to ask for a new contact in the offseason as well, and he is going to be very expensive to retain. He's due to play on his fifth-year option and most of the time, players prefer to work out their contract before their fifth season starts. I envision this possibly leading to a hold out. What are the Jaguars to do?

Deal with it when and if the situation arises.

Boxcutter Bill from MA

Probably not the time, but with the emergence of Parker Washington and the addition of Jakobi do you think we should just play Travis Hunter primarily at cornerback? I think he could really be a generational talent at cornerback.

Jaguars wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, selected No. 2 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, absolutely has the ability to be an elite corner. The reality is that he played just seven games this season and we therefore don't yet precisely know just how effective he will be in the long-term as a receiver. I expect the Jaguars will begin next offseason and perhaps training camp trying to figure precisely how this will look.

Scott from Atlantic Beach, FL

I only write when they make me mad or sad. That used to be frequently, I like not writing into the O-Zone.

You're not alone. The emails following a loss dramatically outnumber those after victories. The numbers therefore have been comparatively small. A happy ready is a quiet reader.

JK from NY & Fernandina Beach, FL

John. My buddy is a long-suffering Jets fan. He believes that Gang Green will never win another championship because they were hexed when Joe Namath made an unholy pact to guarantee a win in Super Bowl III. I told him that, according to the Great and Powerful Oz, there is no such thing as a sports curse. All it takes is better management, coaching and players. He will see that on Sunday. Go Jags!

Curses make good stories, headlines and documentary subjects. They also make for good O-Zone questions and headlines. They are not real.

Nicholas from Fort Hood, Texas

KOAF: If people say you stink when the Jaguars play bad I suggest you increase your inbox for the flood of comments that logically must come from fans exclaiming your awesomeness oh "King of All Funk"

I am always "awesome." Fans don't need to say it.
