O-Zone: Peculiarly clever

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Kathy from Palm Coast, FL

Is there any truth to the idea that Trevor is a hospital quarterback? The latest is that he throws passes that are not accurate and as a result the receivers must stretch out to catch the ball. This causes all the receivers to be less than thrilled with him as a quarterback.

I confess I only recently have become familiar with the phrases "hospital quarterback," "hospital throws" and "hospital balls." I also confess that I'm already worn out enough on the phrases that I would be more than fine if I never heard any of them again. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence on occasion throws passes that expose receivers to hits, just as most NFL quarterbacks on occasion throw passes that expose receivers to hits. And while it has become vogue lately in some parts to find flaw in every mistake Lawrence makes and make those mistakes an "aha trend," it doesn't appear from this view that he throws receivers into danger often enough to identify him as "hospital" anything. It also appears from this view that many NFL receivers these days would do well to remember that going across the middle and getting hit remains part of tackle football – and to remember, too, that quarterbacks sometimes must throw to the middle of field. Somewhere, Keenan is rolling his eyes and smiling.

On the one hand, Trevor Lawrence showing improvement in footwork and mechanics this season is a good thing. On the other hand, these types of basic things to playing the game are not what you want a fifth-year quarterback drafted first overall having to go through. Has he really improved as a player this season? I really don't think so. He appears to be pressing, and that could be because the receivers are dropping so many passes, but he also also been inaccurate at times. In my opinion, he was much better in the second half of 2022, and the first 11 games of 2023. Fortunately, this season he appears to have a capable defense to bail him out of long stretches of poor play during games so far. The poor stretches have occurred in each of the three games the Jaguars have played, so it appears to be more of a trend than an anomaly.

A couple of thoughts on your thoughts. One is that it's important to remember when discussing the whole "Trevor Lawrence Footwork" issue that he's largely working on footwork and fundamentals specific to Head Coach Liam Coen's offense. Because Coen is in his first season coaching Lawrence, it would have been difficult for Lawrence to have worked on these issues in his first four seasons. As for your question … has Lawrence improved this season? He has improved significantly from last season, particularly in the areas of running the offense and in-pocket decision making. We're three games into the season. We'll see where it goes.

Richard from Beaver, PA

Is Lawrence the answer yes or no? Be honest!

Stay tuned.

The defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile hiring is looking really good right about now! The Jags defense is almost looking dominating and I like it! Can they keep it up all year?

Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile indeed has done a nice job with this defense. It's playing in the physical, opportunistic style Campanile wants, with the result what is currently a Top 10 statistical defense that leads the NFL in takeaways. Perhaps most notable is that Jaguars defensive players love playing for Campanile and believe in him, elements wise NFL coaches ignore at their peril. I don't know that the defense can hold opponents to 10 points every two games all season. I expect the unit to be good all season.

It's only three games, but cornerback Jourdan Lewis looks to be a Calais Campbell-esque free-agent signing.

Former Jaguars defensive lineman Calais Campbell represents perhaps the highest standard for any unrestricted free agent signing in Jaguars history. It's hard to compare any player to Campbell. Lewis, who signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent this past offseason, is beginning to merit such a comparison.

I hate when people use the phrase "catchable ball" just because the ball is thrown "too hard." I do think Trevor could throw some of his passes with less velocity, but if it hits the receiver in the hands/chest, they should catch it. That's their job, and why they're in the NFL. You don't see catchers dropping balls because the pitches are too fast.

There are nuances here, but for the most part … fair.

Bradley from Kansas City, MO

Is this the week the Jags come into their own?

The Jaguars are 2-1 and won a hard-fought, physical game against a division rival last week. I think they have a decent chance of winning on the road in a tough venue Sunday. I suppose that could be defined as "coming into their own."

I'm really up and down on this game. I read your "Ten Things" What's your gut instinct telling you? Are we gonna walk away with a win?

Perhaps.

Richard from Quincy, FL

The defense is doing their job, what's wrong with the offense?

The Jaguars' offense averaged 26.5 points per game and led the league in rushing through two games. The offense did not play as well last Sunday. The NFL is a week-to-week league, and NFL perception also tends to be week to week.

Shout out to my best friend "DJ from Grassvalley, CA." HAPPY BIRTHDAY! A Jags fan from the beginning. He will be reading this while we are driving to Santa Clara for the game on Sunday. "Let's Go Jags."

SHOOOOUTOUT!

Hi, KOAGF. Our defense certainly looks good but this has been helped by being in the lead or tied for all but 18 seconds so far. It will be interesting to see how they do when trailing. If only our offense and special teams can perform at the level they are capable of, this would be a team that would be unstoppable.

The NFL is hard, and it's rare to have a team with all three units excelling each week. This in large part is due to all NFL teams paying players a lot of money in the hopes that their three units will excel each week. I expect the Jaguars' offense will play much better a lot of this season than it played in a 17-10 victory over the Houston Texans last week. I also expect the defense will not consistently be able to match the three takeaways it has produced in every game. The difference between good and bad teams in the NFL usually is good teams find ways to win games when all three units are not playing well. This is why the victory over Houston felt like a step toward the Jaguars being a good team.

Three points I would like to make. Why would ANYONE question rookie wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter's production after a whopping three games, learning two positions. That's crazy. Erase the drops this year then tell me how you like Lawrence at 3-0. Stopped in Strings Tuesday on my way home and had two great Bullet Bobs and tried the fried chicken sandwich somebody on here recommended and it was excellent. Cheers!

Three good points.

Eddie from Jacksonville

Since I lean more toward an observer observing than a fan fanning here are my two cents. Maybe Trevor throw to Patrick Washington more than other receivers because he, you know catches the ball.

I expect Lawrence to continue throwing to wide receiver Parker Washington – a.k.a., Patrick Washington – for the reason you cite. I expect this even though Washington had a few issues of his own with drops last week.

How 'bout one for the Jumbo Shrimp?

OK.

John from Jacksonville

Travis Hunter has had only one splash play in three games? I would categorize his pass breakup in the Bengals game that was misinterpreted as pass interference as a splash play as it would have all but sealed a victory. Do people forget he has played offense and defense his ENTIRE LIFE?

Hunter made an outstanding play that should have been the game-winning pass defensed in what became a Week 2 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. He has been outstanding at cornerback. I expect the Jaguars to do more to get Hunter involved offensively moving forward.

Joe from Jacksonville

Zone, with all the dropped passes when we find ourselves in the red zone, No. 85 can still catch the ball! Isn't that STRANGE.

My lifelong friend, a prominent local attorney, likes to say, "That's peculiar," when Jaguars tight end Brenton Strange catches a pass. He has prominent local attorney friends who also do this. You have to be very clever to be a prominent local attorney.
