O-Zone: So not down

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it

Mark from Green Bay, WI

As good as the team has looked lately, the Texans have looked as good. I just hope the team can keep it up. The Broncos are looking really good and that worries me for next week.

This email is a healthy mix of excitement and worry, ably summing up the mood of Jaguars fans following Sunday's 48-20 victory over the New York Jets at EverBank Stadium as they look ahead to Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. And you know what? That mix should sum up the mood. The Jaguars are one of the NFL's hottest and best teams. The Texans are one of the NFL's hottest and best teams. The Jaguars lead the Texans by a game in the AFC South and need to keep winning to win the division. The Broncos are also one of the NFL's hottest teams and all that hot stuff makes Sunday's game at Denver not only compelling but a little scary for Jaguars fans. There's a lot on the line. If the Jaguars win, they are in great shape for a high playoff seed. If they lose, they could be in second place in the division. It's high stakes December professional football. This is stressful stuff. It's also fun stuff. Welcome to contending in the NFL.

Mike from Daytona Beach, FL

Big O, my favorite play Sunday was the screen pass where running back Travis Etienne Jr. made a cool jump cut to juke the cornerback and continued untouched to the end zone. But the best part was that at least 6 Jags hustled downfield to block. It looked like the blockers outnumbered the defenders. How about 1 fer the blockers?

Downfield blocking has been a major part of the Jaguars' success this season. One fer the blockers? Absolutely.

Chris from Mandarin

John, I have nothing to complain about. What should I do with my time?

Be patient.

Wesley from Duvalllll

I'm certain I'm not the only one sending you this, but the Dan Marino reference from Kyle was in regards to what many of us longtime fans were reliving on Sunday. And that was the 62-7 dismantling of the Miami Dolphins in the 1999 playoffs. Mark Burnell and Fred Taylor ended Dan Marino's career in what was the best Jaguar blowout performances ever.

I am well aware of the game. I covered the game, which was and likely will remain the most dominant performance I ever have covered. Former Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell – a.k.a., Mark "Burnell" – threw 9 passes in that game and completed 5 for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns, which is why I didn't and still don't understand what that game had to do with Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence's 6-touchdown performance Sunday.

Jim from Middleburg, FL

Hey, John. How about those Jaguars? John, I have a good feeling about this cause the season is already a great success. More wins to come.

Stay tuned.

Brian from Round Rock, TX

Dan Hicken said that the Jags are a top team that can beat anyone, but they don't have top talent. How is that possible? I am always amazed at the "genius" of the Jaguars' observers. I guess Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen will get plenty of "no respect" ammo from even the local idiots
 I mean, geniuses.

I'm not sure my old friend Hicken is completely wrong here. The Jaguars absolutely have high-end talent. Players such as tight end Brenton Strange and defensive ends Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker are "blue-chip" players and unquestionably "top talent." Lawrence is playing like "top talent" in recent games, and players such as defensive tackle Arik Armstead and linebacker Devin Lloyd fit into the discussion. Whether the Jaguars have a team of All-Pro "talent" beyond that is a legitimate discussion. Don't get lost in the weeds when discussing talent. Here's what the Jaguars have this season: A lot of good football players who are playing as one and playing at a high level. That's more entertaining and usually more effective than a team of players with "top talent."

James from Titusville, NJ

What a game for my two young kids! They got to see it all and then some. The atmosphere was electric and they were entranced through every moment. They stayed until the clock turned all zeroes and couldn't have had a better first experience at the 'Bank. Being so close to Philly, my son told me that he wanted to be an Eagles fan. At the game Sunday, he said that he decided to "quit" on the Eagles and be a Jaguars fan instead. The experience was awesome and we flew home happy and eager to see what these fun Jaguars do against Denver. Go Jags and thank you to everyone who made that experience as special as it could be for me and my kids. From the ticketing staff to the players. Bravo and go Jags!

Good stuff.

I know it's still firmly middle of the season and playoffs are in sight, but looking forward a little bit -- which unrestricted free agents are the biggest priorities to resign this offseason? Assuming you cannot keep them all: Linebacker Devin Lloyd, cornerback Greg Newsome II, wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, running back Travis Etienne, etc.

Multiple players have played their way into being significant offseason stories because they are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents following the season. I expect wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to be a priority in this area. The others will be intriguing and Etienne is absolutely is playing his way into being very, very intriguing.

Anita from Springfield, GA

I like seeing backup quarterback Nick Mullens trot out when we're dominating. Also, there's your 300-yard, 5-touchdown game for all you Trevor Lawrence haters!!!

You go, girl.

John from Jacksonville

Did Cam Little kick a touchback on every kickoff against the Jets? It sure seemed like it. Was that a strategy to limit their kick returner's ability to bust a long run?

Yes, every Jaguars kickoff Sunday was a touchback. Yes, the idea was to limit Jets wide receiver Isaiah Williams' opportunities.

Jeff from Atlantic Beach, FL

What type of magic did Coen put in that wristband?

It's not the wristband, Mars.

Josh from Atlanta, GA

Given the nature of the position, very much unlike defensive end Travon Walker, it sounds like you feel ETN is in the "unlikely" category to re-sign. We CAN if they believe enough it makes the team better in the grand scheme and long term. However, is it fair to infer you are more optimistic in being right by saying he is unlikely to return to the Jaguars in 2026? I'm not trying to put words in your mouth, I just get the feeling that's what I'm reading when discussing his situation.

I don't know that it's fair to call it likely or unlikely that the Jaguars will re-sign Etienne in the offseason. I think they very much will want to re-sign him. I think they will try to re-sign him. Whether that will happen could depend on the contract situations of other players, the salary cap as a whole and the perception of Etienne on the open market. I expect it will be tough. Here's hoping the sides can work it out.

Chevin from Riverside, Jacksonville, Florida

I've never seen Lawrence appearing so comfortable and in control of the offense. Are we witnessing him finally settling into Coen's scheme?

'Twould seem so.

Nick from Virginia Beach, VA

Then I will ask the question what is the best quarterback performance you have seen? Does this at least make Top 5?

I answered your original question a bit too quickly and flippantly. Remember, I have seen many impressive quarterback performances in five decades watching professional football and I have covered many impressive performances in three decades covering it. I covered Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning's 2004 season when he threw a then-NFL record 49 touchdowns – a season in which he threw 5 or more touchdown passes in a game four times and 3 or more touchdown passes 5 more times. That's a high standard, but yes
Lawrence's performance Sunday certainly belongs in the discussion for being among the best quarterback performances I have seen. It was impressive.

Josh from Severna Park, MD

Recalling the Huddle Up podcast this past week, Bucky's prediction was that this would be a BTA game. How about one fer Bucky Brooks?

One fer Buck.

Jordan from Mandarin

We did what we should have done. Past Jaguar teams didn't take care of business against bad teams. This is different. On to Denver.

This is much different. The "same old Jags" isn't a thing anymore. This team is good. That doesn't guarantee anything next week. But it does make what's next really interesting. On to Denver.

David from Maplewood, NJ

Wow, just wow. I didn't think they would let down but what's the opposite of letdown?

Sunday at the 'Bank.
