Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio announced three coaching changes on Tuesday. Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, assistant head coach Steve Shafer and linebackers coach Mike Haluchak will not be retained.
Musgrave's departure had been expected as reaction to a disappointing performance by the offense in 2004. The Jaguars finished 21st in the league in total yards; 16th in rushing and 19th in passing. Those numbers are down from 2003 when the Jaguars were 12th in overall offense; eighth in rushing and 15th in passing.
Turnovers were reduced from 31 in '03 to 22 in '04, but it is the Jaguars' 29th ranking in points scored that was the most major failing on offense. The Jaguars were shutout, 21-0, by Houston in week 16 and scored only one touchdown in the last two games of the season.
Shafer and Del Rio coached together in Baltimore, where Shafer was the Ravens' defensive backs coach. In Jacksonville the past two seasons, the 63-year-old Shafer assisted Del Rio in administrative duties and in coaching the secondary.
